Earlier this year, I had some counselling sessions, because I'd recently escaped a friendship which I didn't realise was abusive until he made me feel unsafe. I left it unable to see the good in people and feeling angry all the time, so I went to counselling.
In counselling we mostly looked at a) trying to find what my values are, and b) working in assertiveness. But at one point, my counsellor called me an "empath". This is something that I never call myself, and I said to her "I don't know, sometimes I feel like I have a lot of empathy, other times I feel like I have none. I guess the truth is somewhere in the middle." At that, she sort of smiled at herself, but didn't say anything and we moved on to something else.
A lot of people in my life have told me that I'm empathetic. I do enjoy listening to people, and giving people space to be open about their deeper parts, to an extent that some people have thought I should be a counsellor myself. I can think of some times I have been empathetic, yet I can also think of times I haven't. For instance, I think I can be very sensitive in one-on-one interactions, but less so in group situations.
And because of it, now I find myself constantly scanning myself, like, do I really feel empathy, what if I don't, if I don't am I bad person or worse. And it's like a catalogue is building in my head of every time I fail or lapse at being emotionally intelligent, every time I miss the point, every time I am unwittingly selfish.
Of course, I think it's probably just human, because no person can be all things to all people. But my OCD doesn't seem to want to listen haha And I also wonder if, to be truly more empathetic I have to stop worrying about whether I am or not?
I'm just wondering if anyone has struggled with similar ruminations and/or has any advice on this?
