2025.01.24 01:30 CozeeSheep Contacted HR for guidance with employee, My supervisor was upset with me for doing so.
Unsure if I am in the wrong, advice is very appriciated.
I have an employee who is unable to do a core part of her job. It is a requirement that she is able to do this to do her current job. She has a record of missing training dates, and has been caught lying about absenses.
I reached out to my supervisor about this issue and they told me that is she isnt able to meet the core function within 2 weeks she should be terminated since we are not permitted to do suspension without pay.
Afterwords I reached out to HR to see if suspension could be an option until she is able to meet the requirement, as I did not want to escalate so soon to termination as it doesnt allow for sufficient time for improvement. If this problem were to occur again in the future we would be prematurely firing employees. Additionally, this employee only works about 4 3 hoir shifts a month, so it will not disturb operations.
For context, the inability to meet this requirement can put other people at risk.
HR told me to document the meeting with the employee where they will be re-evaluated, if they do not pass then to reach back out to discuss other options.
My supervisor found out about this and was upset that I went against chain of command, and that I am not to contact HR before them as they need to be aware of everything in our department. I did however contact them previously regarding this issue. I feel like they thought I went over their head, which I can understand. My intension was to get further clarification on our policy of suspension without pay, and understand all options.
After my supervisor notified me, I agreed and promised it would not happen again.
Did I royally mess up? My supervisor seems to be very upset with me. Is this action frowned upon in most workplaces?

Already have a full size series 70 Colt in .45. I kind of want a smaller commander sized 9mm one too but unsure. I like the look and features of the Kimber but I've never owned one and have heard so-so things. I do like Ruger a lot as a company but never owned an autoloading pistol made by them. What do y'all think?

2025.01.24 01:30 Herp_McDerp My very non-conventional path to BigLaw and beyond
This is for all you youngins that are not in a T14 law school and/or not in the top 25 percent of your class.
Please note that this is not typical but can provide some hope to those that feel like the opportunities are out of their reach.
So, I went to a bottom tier T100 school (I think 95 when I went there). I did ok-good ish and just missed the 25 percent cut off. I tried OCI and only got one interview for a regional mid sized firm that turned me down for an internship. I spent my first summer reviewing cases for a family friend who was writing a case book. My second summer was with a think tank in DC that I had previously had an internship with in undergrad. My last summer was studying for the bar.
When I didn’t land anything out of law school I took on a couple of clients to review some regulatory things they had outstanding.
This is the important part. I started going to start up meetups to see if I could get some clients or move in house that way. I met a partner at a V25 BigLaw firm at one of these events and I got his card. I emailed him asking him to lunch just so I could get some advice. Turns out he needed an extra hand and backed me coming in and working in his group. We got a long great and while it took a couple of months to get the position sorted I was hired without many interviews and the ones I did have were group meetups with other partners for lunch once or twice.
The experience was very rewarding and I eventually ended up in house all because I decided to network and put myself out there. I was able to become a BigLaw associate without doing meaningful (in terms of OCI) internships, graduating from a lower ranked law school and not graduating at the top of my class.
I also realize that the stars had to align. And this is not a blueprint to follow but some hope for those who feel desperate and down because of where they are in their law school journey.

2025.01.24 01:30 shampton1964 Apple - stop "improving" my interface - Anyone know how to disable/enable the trackpad
I'm a touch typist. Quite often I need to write text for a while, but when I am on the laptop (not when it is plugged into my base station) I am touching the trackpad accidentally and KAPOW - cursor is off doing something random like closing a window or downloading pron or whatever the hell will cause the most grief. Mind of its own.
When I use my wireless mouse at a desk, or when plugged into the base station, I have the trackpad set to disable. Easy peasy.
But when I am trying to type on the laptop as a laptop, say posting a question on OSX for example, the cursor will go rogue randomly from some combination of touches. I dream of a simple way to create a hotkey combo to enable/disable the trackpad. I can do it in a terminal window, but that's silly.
Also, APPLE, damn it, stop improving my interface. Your latest version has broken my workflows, and every fucking time I try to move a window by dragging the top panel, it goes full screen or half size or some other goofy disappearing act for which I cannot find an explanation. I'll skip rant on the missing keychain app which I miss also.
Advice please, now that I'm done ranting:
1) A way to hotkey macro the trackpad on/off?
2) Where in settings can I go to turn off all the "helpful" features that turn window rearrangement into Russian Roulette?
