2025.01.24 05:17 FewViolinist5279 first time in hs mock trial š (its not going well) - rant/ tips?
So, I joined mock trial for the first time this year and I was assigned to be a defense attorney (mind you, I have never been involved with mock before nor did I know what I was getting into). i did tell them that I would rather be a witness or another smaller role because I'm not that great at thinking on my feet (esp during objections, and i wanted to leanr about how the whole thing worked) but they still gave me the role š. [so for context: im extremely introverted with social anxiety. I also have no plans to continue with a career that is related to mock trial]
At first it went sort of okay? My teacher kinda just gave me an example of an old direct and then said to follow it... They did help me after the first rough draft of it though. But then the same thing happened when I had to write a cross (i didnt even know what a cross was). I was getting rlly frustruated with this because I had to keep rewriting it (which is a natural process to keep altering ur stuff, but i feel like they kept asking me to rewrite the entire thing) and they would never quite tell me what was wrong. (then later they added that i needed my direct to be no longer than 4 minutes, which is understandable now, but it wouldve been nice to know at the beginning). I think the worst part was that one of our lawyers dropped (they were like a standby lawyer apparently who had been working on a cross and direct?) so then I had to take on their stuff (which was like half finished and all over the place). idk this just rlly angered me.
Now I have to start scrimmiging and i feel so lost. apparently there are redirects?? and whats the whole thing abt adding exhibits? also i feel like im learning a new objection every scrimmage.
I'd say the part im most upset about, however, is that I get so nervous during trial. Like - i keep stumbling over words and getting lost in the directs. I just feel so upset with myself that im doing so bad. Im watching a bunch of videos rn about mock trial (mocktrial masterclass specifically) so i can learn the ropes of how things work, but its so hard for me to put those things to use while also trying to direct a witness at the same time. Ik that its my bad public speaking skills talking tho (ironically).
Is there anyway to - idk - boost my confidence ig? or like any thing i should know before going to an official comp? I rlly wanna do my best and not blubber like a fool anymore, but it doesnt look hopeful at this point.
Sorry for rambling so much. If anyone could give me some pointers on how to act/how to become a better attorney thatd be rlly appreciated though.

In short, I have two files: 1. name.service file 2. name.timer file
In the service file, I specified the system log name, as well as the output
StandardOutput=syslog StandardError=syslog SyslogIdentifier=service-name
Then I created a rsyslog.d service-name.conf file
if $programname == 'service-name' then /valog/service-name/service-name.log & stop
The damn problem with this is it's very touchy.
I've ensured that I've set the ownership of the log file to:
sudo chown syslog:adm service-name.log
But it half-ass works. I just checked my service and it was running and doing actions, but no logs were written. I had to delete the file, re-make it, re-set the ownership, and suddenly it started working.
So the question becomes, I've read that rsyslog and the service value syslog have been replaced.
Is their a more reliable way to ensure I get logs, every time.

Additionally, throughout the three matches we never got a teammate to replace the AI on our team. Why does matchmaking always put me with people with triple digit reps.
