2025.01.24 05:42 Psygnal Nomad. Star Trek Original Series (1967)
 | The crew of the USS Enterprise deals with a life-destroying space probe originally launched from Earth.Nomad and Kirk Computing in 1967 is a little before my time, but it must have been an interesting experience. Since every sci-fi show seemed to have a major character talking a truculent computer to death by pointing out how illogical it was. My first proper job (outside of a supermarket or a paper route at least) was working with a mainframe computer that was run with punch-cards. It was ridiculously easy to get the machine to fall over (once even literally), so I can identify with Kirk in this episode, when he decides to talk Nomad to death. You see, Nomad was originally an Earth space probe. It was launched quite some time previous to the events in this particular episode (Season 2: Episode 3. "The Changeling") and it had somehow become combined with another alien space probe. The resulting combination has not only cobbled-together parts, but cobbled-together programming. Instead of seeking out new life, it is seeking out imperfect life, and destroying it. It has already wiped out the inhabitants of an entire star system, and now it's suddenly on board the Enterprise, and thinking that Kirk wears his shirts a little too open, and Spock's just a smidge stuck up. Imperfections - no matter how slight - are unforgiveable in Nomad's world, because Nomad was coded by an idiot, apparently. Just as the rather poorly designed prop-on-a-string is polishing up its zap-o-matic 2000, Kirk hits it with the whole "You're imperfect!" argument. Nomad is like, "Wut?", so Kirk follows up by telling Nomad that it has made a mistake (it originally misidentified him) and it has to now destroy itself. Nomad at this point is having a bit of a meltdown. For those of you who understand a bit of coding, it's a bit like this: INPUT "NUMBER OF COCKUPS: ", COCKUP IF COCKUP > 0 THEN SAY "ERROR!" EXPLODE: END ELSE WHILE HUMANS>0 SAY "KILL ALL HUMANS!" KILLAHUMAN WEND ENDAfter a lot of shaking, and looking a bit like someone's put a metal spoon in the microwave, Nomad clearly decides it is going to detonate. Kirk and Spock rapidly grab the giant tea-kettle shaped probe, rush it to the transporter room and instruct Scotty to beam it into deep space. Scotty does so without the obvious "What? Just outside then?" gag that would probably have gotten them all killed. If I'm honest, it's quite a fun episode, but 1960s stories involving computers will always age poorly. The computers are always just a bit too eager to be talked to death by the nearest available starship captain, and the creators have never ever thought it would perhaps be a good idea to install an OFF button. Hear me out. I know about greed and power and corruption and all that but it just seems bizarre to me, a regular human, that someone with more money than they can spend in an entire lifetime would just hoard it. Sure, a space race is cool, but does it actually benefit society? Surely you would be much more loved and praised if you used your money to solve world hunger or end homelessness or provided healthcare to those in need. That, to me, is power. Yet we have the few at the top who take from the bottom for themselves instead of being āsaviors of humanity.ā Can someone please explain this thought process to me? Itās not that anyone owes anyone anything, but it makes more sense in my head that it would ultimately give you more power to be the good guy in the situation. Does wealth actually destroy your sense of empathy? Am I simply too crunchy to understand this? Iāve been wracking my brain for so long trying to figure this out but I still donāt get it. 2025.01.24 05:42 adrian8288 How would you rewrite Classroom of the Elite (from a mind game and SCD characters focused point of course) if you don't like how the story turned out?
So, I noticed a lot of scalers don't like how Classroom of the Elite went down (no spoilers, but you know what I mean, Ayanokoji is prolly going down by a lot lmao). HOW would you tweak the story?
Would you change the power dynamics, add more focus on certain characters, delete characters, or maybe rewrite how certain arcs or conflicts played out?
I'm asking this because I actually hate Y2 completely, or at least 70% of it, and I have some ideas myself, but I can't really grasp what went wrong in a practical sense.
