This really isnāt intended to be a political debate. Iām only looking for insight and discussion about this one specific issue. Please donāt come for me.
The new administration has put a freeze on National Institutes of Health. This is where we go to look at clinical trials. Study sessions have been canceled indefinitely. No study sessions means no grant reviews. No grant reviews means no grants rewarded. No grants means no research. No clinical trials. At least with this type of funding, which is a significant percentage of research.
I hope this is temporary but either way, itās scary for people living with chronic conditions that rely on research for advancements on treatments. Is anyone else concerned with this issue? Again, I hope this is temporary while things are transitioning but I canāt help but feel disappointed and scared.

The other day, I was at a local cafĆ© I frequent every Saturday morning. Itās my little ritualācoffee, a croissant, and an hour of reading before diving into errands. I was halfway through a chapter of my book when a couple sat at the table next to me. They were loud, laughing and talking over one another, their voices cutting through the quiet hum of the cafĆ©. I tried to ignore it, but it became impossible to concentrate.
I politely leaned over and said, "Hey, would you mind keeping it down a little? I'm just trying to read." The guy smiled awkwardly, and the woman gave me a quick "Sure, sorry about that."
For about five minutes, they toned it down. But soon, they were back to laughing loudly, even louder than before, as if they were doing it on purpose. At that point, I felt my patience unraveling.
I turned to them again and said, "I'm sorry, but I already asked nicely. Can you either lower your voices or maybe take the conversation outside?"
The woman scoffed and said, "Itās a public space, not a library. Maybe you should take your book somewhere quieter."
That response completely set me off. I stood up, grabbed my coffee, and said, loud enough for others to hear, "It's not about being in public. It's about being considerate. Maybe learn the difference." And then I stormed out of the cafƩ, feeling like my Saturday ritual had been ruined.
But now that Iāve had time to think, I wonder if I overreacted. Was it really that serious, or should I have just ignored them and powered through? I donāt know if I was justified in being so upset or if I made a mountain out of a molehill. What do you think?
