First time poster here!
I couldn't find anywhere else better to ask this, so thought I'd try here first.
I'm (24) currently living with my partner (26) and his parents (for about 3 years of a 6 year relationship) and we are just having a miserable time of it. My question is whether it's better to get into renting or whether to try and withstand a bit more time to save more. I'm also studying at OU (in order to make more money🤞) and working part time, on about £13,572 annually before deduction. My partner works part time and is looking for more work and is on about £6,240 annually (£19,812 total). I suppose I just wanted to see what other people's experiences were. Is renting truly the money sink that I'm told it is? Are rent-to-buys worth it? I've heard of no-deposit mortgages for first time buyers... a pipedream? This is in Sheffield if it helps. And Nationwide says I could borrow by myself in my current circumstances around £22,800, I haven't seen what a combined income could get yet.
Background:
We have gone to a viewing for a flat 3 minutes from my work, this means I would be able to work a lot more hours (confirmed by my supervisor) and wouldn't need to stand and bus for hours, saving close to £100 in transit costs, without impeding on my life or studies. I have about £3000 saved, my partner has about £1000, and the rent on the new place is £600 a month (we currently pay a flat £100 a month board, buy all our own groceries and help his parents with shopping and stuff around the house). From chatting to other tenants and based on our own spending, this seems like it'll be about £750-800 or so a month for us all together including everything to live. Flats range to buy from £50k to £300k depending on areas. Flats in the building I want to rent at are £90k, our dream area flats are £120k.
Is this rental too steep? Affordability calculators say not, but my thoughts that I'll be able to work more and not have to stand in the cold and squeeze on stinky buses is clouding my economical senses that it's bluddy steep for a studio flat with only one working window and a jammed balcony door that doesn't. With a landlord who is "peculiar" and "mostly gets things done". My mum tried to gently slap some sense into me today, mentioning rent-to-buy schemes and shared ownership. I have no debt (other than one year of student loans) and have an excellent credit score I think from trickling a credit card since the moment I could own one and paying off a few small personal loans in full (Graphics card, hoover, dishwasher). I'm just feeling very overwhelmed by it all, so I mean anything at all that you think might help would be wonderful. Thank you!
Background II:
Long story short, I moved in with his parents (100 miles away from home) as a stepping stone to moving out to our own place, but both struggling to find work and trying every sort of role under the sun, I have finally settled in a part time management position at a charity for the past few months and it's fantastic. Overall, patience has ran thin I think for the four of us. It's not that we've overstayed our welcome or anything, but his parents are elderly, 85 yr old dad, 66 yr old mum, we're 24 and 26 and feel stifled in this house for far too many reasons to get into. But when I say it is sometimes abject misery, I don't exaggerate. We've also both admitted to ourselves that we're in a relationship of convenience, and are very open to the fact we may not be living together if a move occurs, so I'd almost be looking for just a place to myself, but I can't afford that unless I'm living closer to my work!

The smoke detector in our Telus home security system keeps misfiring. We're now being threatened with a fine from the fire department. We've raised the issue with Telus that it's malfunctioning and they want us to shell out money for a house call and to replace the unit--we got it less than two years ago when we signed up for a three year plan. I feel that they should be replacing a faulty unit for free. How do I proceed?
