I know the book is meant to be read like a tennis match—flipping back and forth from the main text to the footnotes as they appear, and I’ve done that a couple of times in past reads. But I like to experiment with different ways of engaging with it—sometimes reading passages out of order, or even trying to piece together the story chronologically.
Lately, I’ve been wondering if anyone has ever tried reading Infinite Jest straight through from page 1 to 1079, just going through the main text first and tackling all the footnotes at the end in one go. I know it’s not how it’s designed to be read, and you’d lose some of the interplay between the text and footnotes, but I imagine it could offer a different kind of experience—maybe letting the core narrative unfold more smoothly before diving into all the extra details.
If you’ve done multiple reads of the book and have a good grasp of its structure, do you think it would be worth trying? Or would it take away too much from what makes the book so unique?

I’m a fresh graduate and I plan on looking for C++ developer jobs, because it’s honestly just the only language I enjoy programming in.
As a bit of a preamble to my job hunting, I’ve gone through a bunch of open source C++ repositories to try and figure out some best-practices for syntax, program structure, common libraries, etc.
I’ve realised that I apparently don’t know anything about actually programming in the language. I understand the high level topics: I studied compilers (I wrote one in C++); I studied the ASM equivalents to common C++ branches, loops, function calls, parameter types, etc.; I broadly understand the language ‘s implementation considerations like scoping, typing, lifetimes, etc.; I wrote all of my Uni assignments in the language including basic async networking.
I still don’t feel like I understand the language. I feel like I’ve travelled forwards in time and everyone I try to talk to is speaking a different language and laughing at my poor imitation of C++ programming.
How do I catch up with the language’s development since C++98? Which libraries/language features are common/useful. What are the current conventions for programming in the language in terms of naming or program structure? What else is there that I can’t even think of, but need to know?

This may be a strange request! But I’m seeking something with the right person, and I’m wondering if I could find it here.
I’m a 30 year old man, based in the US, looking for someone to marry. I’ve met a good number of people and never found the quite the right fit in terms of basic goals / views on life.

What I’m seeking: - someone between 22-36 who is confident in what they want in life - speaks English decently - wants to live (or already lives) in the US (I am trapped here) - has no children, and has never previously been married

so my best friend and i went out tonight. for context, we’ve been friends since 6th grade, and we’re 22 now. (we’ll call her sarah.) she has been talking to this guy, who we’ll call john, for about 3 months, and they only started dating about 3 weeks ago. i met john while him and sarah were only talking, not exclusive, and he seemed decent. definitely a bit immature for his age and he lacked politeness in some ways, but i didn’t hold that against him. well, fast forward to last week, sarah tells me that john’s dumped her- for “acting weird.” he says that she was hiding something from him and that he can’t trust her- because she was on her phone during a movie and turned her brightness down. sarah also told me about an instance where john made fun of a skin condition she has that he’s previously known about (i won’t specify what the condition is to maintain her privacy.) so, throughout this past week sarah’s said that john has blocked her on all social media, unblocked her, and is now texting her and expecting regular updates from her on where she goes. all while “not dating.” which brings us to tonight. i’m fed up with hearing about him, and how he’s been treating my friend! so when we see him at the bar and he gives sarah a side hug (while barely looking at her) i just looked away. he then reached out to shake my hand, and i looked at him and said “hey.” i didn’t reach my hand back out, and sarah immediately scolds me for not shaking it. i weakly put my hand out and give it a slight shake. (this, i’ll admit, was a bit petty on my end.) john then walked away to another end of the bar, and sarah and i left soon after, because she was upset at me for not shaking his hand. i explained that i didn’t want anything to do with john, due to the way he’s treated her and especially since they technically “weren’t dating” so i didn’t need to bother with formalities like i would if they were together. she explained that it’s still rude to not shake his hand and that i should’ve put my feelings aside and shown him respect. she also noted that she would never treat my boyfriend like this. i then said “___ and i have been together for 5 years and he’s never done anything like this to me. if he had, i would definitely expect you to react the same way. i wont apologize for not ‘respecting’ someone that doesn’t respect my friend” she was the driver tonight, so we drove in silence until she dropped me off at my apartment. i told her to let me know when she made it home, and that was that. so, am i the asshole?
