Europe is in a difficult spot. Although DeepMind is headquartered in London, it is owned by an American company. Mistral is the only European AI company of note and it's behind the US and now China. We cannot say for sure who will win the AI race but whoever it is will have tremendous power and it will not be Europe. What then should Europe do to secure its future? It will need to side with either the US or China and both have real problems. Chinese values are not European values by any stretch of the imagination. They have a lack of regard for human rights, for privacy and for democracy. This is far from the European ideal.
Unfortunately, the US is now turning against Europe and against those values. The US, which built the international order and on which its stability rests, is attempting to reward Putin for his invasion of Ukraine; is also attempting to steal Greenland from an EU and NATO member state; and all this is done with the support of the tech titans who will control AI. Its leaders control all three branches of the US government, have a majority on the Supreme Court, and want nothing to do with the international order.
So what does Europe do? Is its best bet to work with China to develop Open Source AGI/ASI and robotics so that it will not be controlled by an increasingly unstable and hostile US? Is Europe being pushed to do this whether we like it or not? No easy answers but interested in opinions.
