Hi UAE Community,
I’m not sure if this is the right place for this, but I need to vent and share a PSA that I think everyone should know. I’ve been living in Dubai for over 20 years, and unfortunately, I’ve seen things change drastically over the last five years. My family and I have been running a restaurant here for 12 years, but we’re now at a tipping point where we might have to shut our doors for good. And from what I hear, we’re not alone in this struggle.
The biggest challenge? The way restaurant businesses are being exploited by food delivery aggregators and ordering platforms. These platforms charge us up to 35% commission on the gross bill amount and an additional fee of up to 7 AED per menu view (cost-per-click). These costs are unsustainable, and it’s only a matter of time before many restaurants are forced to shut down.
Here’s an example to put things into perspective: If you order something from a restaurant offering a 40% discount through one of these platforms, let’s say your total bill is 100 AED before the discount. After the discount, you pay 60 AED, plus the delivery charge. But here’s the kicker: the aggregator takes 35% of the original 100 AED bill, meaning the restaurant is left with just 25 AED. That’s not even enough to cover basic costs, let alone turn a profit.
The market has become so competitive that we’re forced to use these platforms just to stay visible and make some sales, but it’s a losing game. Negotiating with these multinational companies hasn’t worked—they’re focused on making as much money as possible, no matter the impact on small businesses.
So, here’s my plea: if you can, please support small, independent restaurants by ordering directly through their websites. Every order that avoids these platforms helps us stay afloat a little longer and continue to support our teams.
I’m sorry for the long rant, but I feel like a lot of people don’t know what’s happening behind the scenes. If you value the diversity of Dubai’s food scene, your support can make a real difference.

So years ago like long ago I bought black ops 3 for the Xbox 360, it came with a code for black ops 1 as well, I redeemed it and the game was now technically mine well now it's saying I never owned the game and I basically have to buy it, I went through my purchases and everything to see when I redeemed it but it's not there, I once also gameshared with a friend who also had black ops 1 and got it the same way I did I feel like that messed it up and honestly I don't feel like buying it

2025.01.27 17:16 Darth_Morgoth92 A player sacrificed their alignment to save innocents
So the party I'm GM'ing is in the middle of the DoIP campaign and was investigating the town master of Phandalin, Harbin Western. I had set the story where he was sending news out to countryside via the party that Phandalin was safe from the dragon attacks and anyone can take refuge there. He initially was very cowardly and wouldn't leave his house, but as the campaign progressed, he became more confident and showed his face a lot more. This intrigued the party and, of course, they wondered why he was wanting them to send out the message he gave.
After returning from one of their quests, they found that he had a giant "drainage ditch" being dug around the entire town. Alarm bells were going off for them and they actively started investigating him and his home. From earlier investigations when they first met him, they knew he had a third floor room that had some kind of altar inside it, but when snuck through the house, they couldn't find a way up there (very poor investigation rolls even when they had some brilliant ideas to try to find it and bad dexterity rolls to get in through the window). So they bid there time, watching for anything suspicious to happen.
They soon found it when they saw a red light coming from the room with the altar and when the townsfolk started attacking each other over different trinkets. The bard was able to throw a dagger through the window and hit Harbin while everyone else was able to find the door into the room. They got him to confess that he was a worshiper of Abbathor, the dwarven god of greed, and that he started a ritual that would sacrifice the entire town and his reward would be wealth and fame as a survivor of a "dragon attack" on the town. When they pressed him on how they could stop the ritual, Harbin stated that they would have to touch the altar and sacrifice something truly precious to them.
The party debated on who would make the sacrifice and what they would lose and the goliath sorcerer made the decision to sacrifice his alignment to save the town. Now in his backstory, he was peacefully driven out of his tribe because he was learning magic and they had rules that magic was prohibited. Because of him being driven out this way, he set his morals to where he would deal justice to the wicked based on the code of honor he made. When he was making the sacrifice of his alignment and code, he also killed Harbin, dealing the last justice of his old code. I made it that they altar fed on what he gave, and it changed his memory of him being driven out of the tribe. It went from a peaceful event to a violent one where the tribe tried to kill him and he fled. His new alignment is Neutral Evil. His actions did save the town, though.
After the session I talked with the player to make sure he was alright with what happened and he said he was. He also said he was eager to see where he can take this change in his character. All in all, I was very impressed with his choice and I have new stuff to think of now for this campaign!

 | I have kind of a mess on my wall after doing some DIY CAT6A drops. There is hard wood between the two holes that I don't want to drill through, so I'm left with this being exposed. How would you clean it up? My only requirement is that the solution cannot involve threading the cables through again, because that would be an enormous pain in the ass. I'm willing to cut into the side of low-voltage boxes or whatever is required. Any advice would be great! It would be great to create layers of different people, being able to toggle them off or on, give hubs (organisations that multiple people are part of and are on the outside of the drawing) that arise different colours. Do you have any tips for me on how to (re)create my spreadsheet or change import methods? The Data Table inside Gephi looks like a mess now hehe :-). My boyfriend has an apartment that my parents don't even know about. We've been together for a long time and we're both adults. I'm so tempted to just dissappear from my family. The only thing I need to worry about is my health insurance, other then that I could completely vanish. I want to go beyond no contact, I dont want them knowing where I live. Has anyone else vanished from their parents? Can you even do that.

I've been working in the film/tv industry for almost four years and experienced a few droughts. Last year was pretty exceptional and because my lease in London was up I decided to pack up and return home to Ireland to save some money. I ended up landing a job on a tv production that lasted six months and wrapped up in December. I've now been out of work for almost two months now despite reaching out to friends and applying to posts in the film/tv schemes here in Ireland.
My partner and I have been talking about buying a home together and agreed I should get another job whilst I'm not working in the film/tv industry as both a safety net and to keep a consistent income to get us a better mortgage rate. As much as I agree that I should do it, and I have applied for them, I'm having trouble shifting my ego around getting a second job.
In my head I've developed an ego and began to see working in hospitality and such as "below" me, so the fact I'm applying for it feels surreal to me. I keep having to remind myself that this is just a temporary thing for me and my partner and in no way has my world or career fallen apart.
Has anyone else experienced something like this? I know it's really stupid and shameful but I'm struggling with going through with it. How can I drop the ego and carry on?
