Evening guys, considering joining my local reserves unit as a Reserve CMT as I’m interested in the role. Couple questions:
1.My current employer is enrolled in armed forces covenant, I’m transient worker so could travel up to 3 hours away a day, also nature of work means occasional late nights, how strict is it to attend the weekly meets if I was working late far away?
2.How easy is it to balance Work/life/reserves?
3.whats the social side of it like, do reserve units do a lot of socials generally?
- What would a reserve CMT do at a unit, during weekly meets and annual training requirements?
- Any general tid bits for interested in joining the army reserves?

2025.01.27 19:10 yummy_burrito Seems to be a lack of critical thinking and resourcefulness among Gen Z and younger.
Disclaimer: I am in the Gen Z age and I recognize that this is a major generalization.
To make this less "Doom and Gloom" let's try focus this thread on how this issue could be addressed.
I just finished university and I am so disheartened by the number of incompetent, spacey, sheep that I encountered (inflammatory, I know but necessary to describe the extent of the issue). Group projects and class discussions were PAINFUL.
These are usually painful but imagine the worst group project/discuss and multiple it by 10. Fourth year students who can't even answer basic questions related to their major. International students that can probably wouldn't even understand themselves if they say a recording of themselves. People staring at each other when asked a question unless the answer is blatantly obvious. My professor asked us to do socratic discussions where 4th year students needed to think critically about issues .... this did not go well......... Students complaining or asking for an extension for assignments/tests they did not prepare for.
I also worked as an academic advisor and so many people would come and ask for help with simple things like dropping a class. Could you imagine doing that for thousands of people??
Some possible solutions/problems that I can think of:
- More strict academic standards: • Low quality = low grades. Then students will have no choice but to produce higher quality work. • More scholarships for academic excellence. I volunteered a lot while in university because most scholarships were for community involvement. Unless you are the top 5% in academics you are likely not getting a significant scholarship for your grades. • Accessible information about is actually studied in that degree (a lot of degrees like biology are not what you think).
- Less technology: • My university has an Instagram page for everything. A website for student engagement would be better. Paper student info pamphlets would be even better. • Two-factor authentication should be through email and not an app on your phone. • Anyone doing doing destracting things on their laptop should sit in turn back of the room or be reported. • Posting lecture notes on Desire to Learn (D2L) at least 2 days in advance so students can prepare their notes. Or post them after class. • No phones in classrooms. • Paper textbooks that can be resold. • No mandatory online trivia that you have to pay $100 for. • Attendance and short quizzes on D2L that can be done at own pace instead of Iclicker. • Fewer QR codes for menus, services, etc
- Fewer group projects: More individual evaluation on group projects. Group projects are necessary but in my 4th year almost all of my assignments were group projects. Getting people to even show up to meetings was like pulling teeth, nevermind getting them to do work. I lost 20% on my final project for one of my classes because the people in my group read directly from their notes and did not give an engaging presentation. This was after I did most of the work and asked them to go over their (relatively few) slides so they knew the content well.
- More resources to support young people and students: • I was working full time while I was a full time student. The cost of living is so high that most students have to work while in school so they can not focus on their education as much they would like. I feel for my fellow students, especially international students because they have so much financial stress. • Affordable student housing and cafeteria near or on campus. Living costs are high but at my uni on-campus residence is even more expensive. They started giving rooms out to Ukrainian refugees because there were so many empty dorms. • Carpooling and bus programs for university students. • I do not think tuition should be free but subsidizing it to $25,000 - $50,000 seems reasonable • Paid internships and masters (my masters does not have a stipend)
^ Mentioning this to illustrate that not all parents are supportive. In 2022, I spent 3 weeks at home during Christmas break and after two weeks my mom started saying I would need to start paying for utilities and food at her house .... even though they have more than enough money and other siblings had been living there for free for over a year during online school. She also made it difficult for me to get student loans because she would not share my tax papers with me. I do think it makes sense to provide resources to students with student loans ..... But I ended up getting student loans just so I could get more scholarships, jobs and resources.

2025.01.27 19:10 N0c7i5 Can’t seem to grasp framebuffers/rendering
I think I understand the basics of framebuffers and rendering, but it doesn’t seem to be fully sticking in my brain/i can’t seem to fully grasp the concept.
First you have a default framebuffer which i believe is created whenever the opengl context or window is and this is the only framebuffer that’s like connected to the screen in the sense that stuff shows on screen when using it.
Then you can create your own framebuffer which the purpose is not fully clear it’s either essentially a texture or like where everything is stored (the end result/output from draw calls)
Lastly, you can bind shaders which tell the gpu which vertex and fragment shader to use during the pipeline process, you can bind textures which I believe is assigning them to a texture unit that can be used in shaders, and then lastly you have the draw calls which processes everything and stores it in a framebuffer which needs to be copied over to the default framebuffer.
Apologies if this was lengthy, but that’s my understanding of it all which I don’t think is that far off?

Did I choose money over love?
I would love a second opinion. I just turned 35, five months ago. The day before my 35th birthday I broke up with the love of my life because he couldn’t contribute financially to having our own family. You could say I was having a mid-life crisis. I met my partner when I was 29 and I told him how bad I wanted kids. I knew he had a vasectomy. A year into our relationship, we split the cost of the reversal. $8,000 in Alberta. He has 3 of his own kids, and he is 10 years older than me. His kids are now 16, 18, and 20 years old. He was a single dad and raised them himself. He was truly the love of my life. He always told me he would want nothing more than to have our own kids. As much as I knew that, he still has his own family.
I have a good career and was ready financially but he wasn’t putting in the effort on his end financially . We discovered the reversal was not working and were going to try IVF, but the problem is my partner didn’t have money for IVF. The day before my 35th birthday I broke up with him. After 3 years of trying to get pregnant , I realized I was on my own financially. Am I a complete asshole for leaving the love of my life over finance? Now 5 months later, I’m still no closer to having a family of my own. It breaks my heart . I don’t feel like I should have had to pay for IVF myself, as it’s very expensive. I just wanted him to help me pay so I wasn’t doing it completely on my own. Am I horrible for choosing money over love? Money is the currency for everything.
After almost 5 years of trying , I didn’t feel supported financially and having my own family is really important to me
help! I’m still in love with him and he still doesn’t have the money for IVF. I know there’s other options. I just want to know if I’m horrible for choosing money over love. Anybody else ever in a similar situation?

2025.01.27 19:10 Constant_Algae7109 Advice on Obtaining Career Path?
First time poster here so sorry if what I say is difficult to get across. I'm turning 30 this year and the idea of trying to figure out my career path is becoming more and more prevalent on my mind. The biggest issue im running into here is due to limited options where I previously lived, my work history is mostly retail with random odd jobs sprinkled in here and there. There's really only been one thing in my life that lve been good at doing and I'm exceptionally knowledgeable in and that's video games and video game history. I was raised old school in the arcades at Chuck E. Cheeses, Game Works, Dandy Amusements ect. My first memories are of receiving my Nintendo 64 with a yellow cartridge copy of Donkey Kong Country 64. Video games and it's culture are deep set roots to who I am as a human being and I want to utilize that passion and turn it into a career, I'm just struggling to figure out how I can do that (other than Game Stop I feel like that's coping out). Does anyone have any experience in this or any general advice on what I can do? I want to be able to find success in what I love.

I mean, i understand it could be just so we have something to think about but there is just so many unanswered questions. I loved this movie, one of my favorite ones of all time, but half way through I started to think that maybe i was supposted to watch some other movie first, and after watching it i was sure there is a sequel. For me the ending just seemed to imply that there are some unfinished matters and it is not the end of the story.
