Hello everyone.
I think that after a few years, it's time to write down my only paranormal experience that I have not been able to explain away by some simple thinking. Back in highschool I used to have this friend called Morrison. He was this ADHD blonde kid with glasses that smoked weed and occasionally did LSD or other psychedelics. One day our school was canceled, and so as the stupid teenagers we were, we went to a coffee shop and he bought us this container of (Atlantis? I think is what the shrooms were called). This was my first time taking psychedelics, so I didn't know how risky it would be to take them in the big city. We ate them, they are super bitter but I chew and swallow, and we do groceries to have something to eat while tripping, and after a while it starts kicking in.
Sounds get distorted slightly, the floor tiles become slightly wavy and tree bark creeps it's way up to the sky like a river. Eventually we get very tired of walking while tripping and so we settle down on this park bench near the museum, taking in the sights the sounds and the smells, both in our own little worlds.
As we sit there, this elderly couple comes walking up to us on the gravel path. It's a black couple, both looking above their eighties, and one of them has a cane to support them. As they pass us, the woman stops and waves, asking for our names and giving us a big smile. She looks like any typical black granny, white curls, eyes are a little bloodshot but she looks friendly and wise.
As the conversation continues, my friend and I are kind of glued to the bench, we are tripping and trying our very best not to seem suspicious, all we can do is stay put and answer her questions. She slowly starts to make weird comments, and reaches out to hold my hands, she starts telling me specifically that my name is not Isa, but [I forgot, some biblical name] and that I am an angel, and Morrison is my holy helper. She tells me which school I need to go to, that I have healing powers, that we will meet again in the future, that she can see great things in me as an angel, and all the while her husband is in the back nodding and smiling, repeating "she's special!" "She's special!" As if to say that he knows his wife is special, that she can read people. She gets uncomfortably close to my face, we really couldn't tell if she was real, if she knew we were tripping, we were stuck in confusion and fear...
After what feels like literal hours, they leave, giving us one last smile. Both of us sat petrified for what felt for another hour before both of us scurried to our bikes, rode them home and parted ways without saying a single word.
This encounter felt so unreal and magical, comforting yet terrifying, that it was hard to believe it really happened... But then again the dose we took (20mg) was relatively average and besides small visual hallucinations it shouldn't have done anything, not hallucinate an entire goddamn couple. And both me and my friend saw this. She has literally been stuck in my mind for all these years, this encounter, I don't talk to Morrison anymore for three years now. So I guess it's a bit of a relief that I can finally share it here. And sorry if details are left out, I can try my best to remember if any of you have questions!

2025.01.27 19:52 OpossumsNeedLoveToo Guilt over letting my dog with CHF be given a sedative prior to passing
I'm feeling a fair amount of guilt over the way my dog may have suffered prior to having to put him down Friday night, so I'm hoping others who have been through something similar can either ease my mind or confirm my fears, whichever is more accurate.
Now that it's Monday I've called our regular vet, and he's going to call me back sometime today to answer my questions. So I'm partially writing this to organize my thoughts beforehand.
For context, we adopted our dog Murphy in January of 2018, and he was estimated to be about 3-4, so he was probably about 10 or 11 this year. He was a ~17lb Yorkie mix, (probably Shih Tzu), and for the past year he has been on meds for congestive heart failure, or CHF. He was on Furosemide, Vetmedin, Spironolactone, and Enalapril. About two months ago he had his meds increased since he was coughing more, but they seemed to be managing his symptoms. He was still his happy self, had no trouble eating, still got excited to go on walks and get treats, and seemed to be able to get to sleep without trouble, though Thursday night he was more restless than usual, so we were keeping an eye on him.
Around 7:30pm on Friday, my husband returned home with our dog from his parents' house. They watch him for us during the work day and give him his midday meds, then my husband and/or I go over to pick him up and usually stay for dinner. I worked later so I didn't join them, but apparently he got a couple nibbles of turkey as per usual and was acting normal. But when it was time to leave he didn't want to walk. My husband carried him to the car, thinking he might just be tired.
When they got home, Murphy laid down right away on the floor but kept sitting back up, which we knew was a sign he was having trouble breathing laying down. His resting breath rate was about 30 per minute, and normally it was about 18, so we were concerned. His gums were a little pale. We truly knew something was wrong when he wouldn't take his night-time meds with turkey, and he had no interest in going on his final walk of the night. So we took him to our local emergency vet about 14 minutes away.
They didn't seem overly concerned, but they did give him Lasix to help relieve fluid she could hear in his breathing, and they also gave him a sedative called Torbugesic Butorphanol to help him relax. They said he may appear "stoned," and I regret not asking more questions about what to watch for that would be abnormal.
We got him home shortly after. Initially they said they'd keep us there with him for observation, but then they said he should be okay to go home, so I'm upset in hindsight that I didn't push for them to let us stay. When we got home, he kept trying to get up and walk around but was unsteady on his feet, so he only got a step or two before having to flop down. That progressively got more pronounced, so we laid with him and gently kept him from hurting himself without restraining him too much. We offered him water but he didn't want it.
After about an hour of this, he seemed more agitated and wasn't able to move around much. He began panting quickly and his tongue and gums were very pale, so we rushed him back to the ER vet. We called on the way and they agreed he should be seen.
We arrived back there and they took him to the back right away. At this point he was limp and unresponsive with his mouth open. He had thrashed a bit in the car as we were pulling into the parking lot, but we assumed he was just stressed and struggling due to the confusing sedative effects. When the vet re-entered and asked us what changed, she listened and then said he likely had a seizure in the car and possibly prior and the sedative had masked that.
This next bit is a blur for me, but she basically said there was no guarantee he would recover from this and that we could either euthanize him or try to stabilize him overnight. Initially we opted for the latter because it was all happening so fast, but we got about 5 minutes away from the vet before calling them and saying we were returning to say goodbye. I realized I didn't want him to be alone and scared and that I would just be prolonging this ordeal for him. My husband was in agreement but initially let me sign for the additional treatment because he understood I was hurting and trying to save our boy.
We came back and they let us have some time with him alone. He was breathing so fast but able to blink, though it was hard to tell if he was seeing us or not since they had given him diazepam already for the catheter they were going to place if he had stayed overnight. So he was more sedated and unable to move, and I hope that means he wasn't feeling pain, but I don't know. I'm sure he was scared and that makes me so sad, but I'm forever grateful we came back and were able to comfort him until the end. He passed very peacefully once they gave him the injections for euthanasia. His breathing slowed during the first one, and seconds after the second one he passed.
I know we're lucky that it wasn't a more traumatic last day for him. Reading stories these past couple of days has made me realize CHF hits hard and fast when it decides it's time, but our vet was understandably vague about how much time he would have left, and I didn't think to research beyond what to look for in terms of his breathing worsening. He was his normal happy self for a whole year after his diagnosis, so I know it would have been premature to put him down sooner. I just never wanted him to have to be scared or stressed on his last day with us. We hoped to be able to see more of a decline and schedule euthanasia at home, but life didn't work out that way.
I guess I'm just stuck feeling guilty wondering if we should have known sooner something was wrong after bringing him back home on the sedative. And also wondering if they should have known not to give him a sedative that could depress his respiratory function. They didn't warn us of that, and I'm only seeing it now after looking up the side effects of what they gave him. I'll ask my regular vet today, so I'll update with what he tells me.
But yeah, this post also functions as a catharsis for me to warn others whose dogs have CHF that a sedative may mask signs of seizure and potentially increase breathing difficulty, so please be aware of that or stay for monitoring even if they say you can monitor at home.
I do want to end this on a positive note. Despite this one very bad day, I feel so grateful to have had him, even knowing how bad it hurts to lose him. And I know he had a really good life with us for the past 7 years, which I wouldn't trade for the world. We're always better for having loved our pets and having been loved by them, and I'll treasure the memories we made always. ❤️
