2025.01.27 19:32 Routine-Banana-1848 Why do fan freak out over this jersey, I don't get it.

Why do fan freak out over this jersey, I don't get it. I seen FFDP in North Carolina live in like 09 when I was a Marine. They might have had 100 people or less at that venue. I then seen them again and met them in 2016. Even the band themselves freaked out over it. I don't get it? Explain. I recently was going through my stuff and even more people freaked over this thing, hence I post this here.

2025.01.27 19:32 JinjaBaker45 Deepseek is nothing new

The Deepseek hype as I've seen it play out basically rests on the following key points:

  1. It's a Chinese model,
  2. that's open source,
  3. with api costs a fraction of o1,
  4. that was trained at a relatively small cost,
  5. while nearing / matching / surpassing o1's capabilities
R1 is a very impressive model, don't get me wrong. If I were Anthropic or Meta, I'd be feeling pressure to get out my next releases ASAP to correct perceptions about the current rankings in the AI race. That said ... why on earth are people treating this like some kind of existential threat to OpenAI?
All 5 points have already happened in the past and no one cared.
For an example of all 5, we need only look back to the GPT-4o era and Qwen-2-72B.
It was an open-source Chinese model that you could call from APIs for a fraction of the price, that was pretty close to 4o's capabilities, and that was trained for much less than 4o cost.
"But it's different this time because it's a reasoning model!"
R1 is NOT as good as o1. LiveBench remains my best metric for measuring model performance since the ChatBot Arena human evals were basically solved, and R1 is still squarely behind o1 full, though it does impressively come in at the #2 spot overall.
Keep in mind -- OpenAI has o3 and o3-mini already, unreleased, so they have already surpassed their own #1 ranking.
What we're seeing in R1 is exactly like how, in the past, OpenAI pushed LLM performance forward, and then those gains are replicated to almost-as-good-but-much-cheaper-and-open-source results by another company. It happened with Meta's Llama releases, Qwen, and now R1.
"But it's so cheap!"
This is the one that I have to scratch my head about because, if cheapness was the primary concern, Gemini-2.0-Thinking is Google's reasoning model that (unless they change the price) is an order of magnitude cheaper than even R1 -- and that's just the enterprise API, it is literally free with unlimited use for normal users. It is somewhat worse in terms of capability ... but the same is true of R1 to o1.
So someone please explain to me -- what is the hype??

2025.01.27 19:32 petals-pinecones My results + photo! I'm from the Maritimes in Canada.

My results + photo! I'm from the Maritimes in Canada. I'm from the East Coast of Canada and expected to get 100% European. Which was right!
I have an Irish surname, and my mom's maiden name is Scottish. I heard my dad's family came from Ireland, so I expected a but more Irish, but it's mostly Scottish. Also, we were told they came from County Claire and Tipperary in the Republic of Ireland, yet it shows Northern Ireland/Ulster as my region. Interesting! Any thoughts on the accuracy on that? Is my Irish family story wrong?
I figured my Scottish would mostly come from the Highlands, it's what I've heard; that they left during the Highland clearances. My great grandparents even spoke some Gaelic in Canada.
The 2% Gemanic Europe I didn't expect, is that normal for Scottish or Irish ancestry?
I'm from Nova Scotia, aka New Scotland. These are some pretty typical white results for our litle Celtic-influenced community. My town even has village names listed in Gaelic, and the longest running Highland games outside of Scotland. Although, it's becoming much more multicultural these days.
Both sides of my family are Catholic. My grandma was born out of wedlock, which was a big no no at the time. She apparently had a lot of shame about it, which is sad. Boy have times changed!
Her mother gave birth at a nunnery, and than other adults raised her. Her dad was a worker from the US (they were in their early 20s), and he returned home. Her mom ended up moving to the US at a housekeeper (they didn't go together). They died in Massachusetts and New York state. So I have many American cousin matches!
Let me know if you have any comments or questions, and happy searching =)

2025.01.27 19:32 Determinaator Passive earning: PacketShare

Payment proof
Guide for PacketShare that goes more in-depth
PacketShare is a relatively new bandwidth sharing application that allows you to earn passive income by selling a part of your internet connection. Works pretty much the same way as all the other such apps in this space, simply sign up, download the application and let it run in the background (naturally constant internet access is required in order for the internet data to be shared)
You earn $0.20/GB (all countries) and you can use as many devices as you want provided that they have a unique IP address attached to them. Withdrawals start from $20 via PayPal.
NOTE: Payments take like forever to be processed (usually on Fridays + additional 5-10 business days), so if you are looking for something that pays out a bit more quickly it's not something I would necessarily recommend.
📧 Sign-up options: Email, Google
🖥️ Devices: Windows, Android, CLI, Docker, iOS
🌍 Countries: Worldwide, potential earnings will depend on traffic demand in your particular area

2025.01.27 19:32 thebigbigbuddha On Orbit Transportation with Spacecraft Swarms

Hey robotics!
My name is Sidh, and I’m a Ph.D. student at Purdue specializing in multi-agent/swarm robotics for orbital infrastructure—think repair, retrieval, assembly, and construction in space! I’m also a co-founder of Manifold Research Group, where we tackle ambitious, next-generation research problems.
I’m excited to share that I’ll be giving a talk this Saturday, Feb 1st, at 12 PM (PST) on my Ph.D. research and some of the exciting projects we’re working on at Purdue and Manifold.
Talk Title: On-Orbit Object Transportation with Spacecraft Swarms
I’ll dive into the research my co-authors and I published in this paper:
https://arc.aiaa.org/doi/abs/10.2514/6.2025-0405
The talk will also explore:

If you’re interested in space robotics, swarm behavior, or futuristic engineering challenges, come join us for this talk!
