This could get long so buckle up. I hope I can put these thoughts into words ok.
An old friend(30) has basically abandoned her child(7) at her great grandma's house. I am really bothered and I am unsure whether or not to confront her about it.
Now first let me tell you about mom: She has a very good job with very long hours however she works a week on week off. She has taken advantage of her grandma for childcare and basically just slowly let it get to the point of leaving her child there. This happened to her as a child with the same grandparent. She struggles with mental health. She has been in abusive relationships and had a lot of trauma and I empathize with that, but she is out of those situations now. She is an ex drug addict and had quit drinking until meeting her new man. She now drinks and blames it on her ex for ruining her life. (She's not wrong he really was an awful person) Now she posts on Facebook about how happy she is and all this positive mental health stuff and how she's breaking the cycle etc. It's all bullshit tho she's completely dedicated her life and free time to this man and left her child behind.
So anyways our kids are friends! I went to pick her kid up for a sleepover with us and they were "at Grandma's while she's on night shift"... And I come to a tough conversation with great-grandmother at drop off the next day. I do not know how old great-grandma is but she is way too old and not in great shape to raise a child. Child protection has gotten involved and said the child has to stay with great-grandma now. The mother slammed the door in child protections face when they came to confront her about her absence. She won't even talk to them. As far as great-grandma knows she is unaware of the fact that cps has moved her child into her grandma's custody. Grandma goes on to tell me the child has been with mom all of 3 days this year. Tells me how happy and excited the kid was to come and spend the night with us because they dont get a chance to get out much. I really felt like she was reaching out to me for help with the mom. I 100% WILL be picking up the kid to play and sleep over more often now that I am aware.
I have really lost a lot of respect for her. I knew she left her child with Grandma when she was working but I didn't understand the gravity of the situation. And I feel like maybe she needs to hear it from a friend to smarten up or something I don't know how to approach it. We are no longer insanely close friends and have drifted over the years however we do get together once or twice a year to catch up or get the kids together.
I don't know what to do and I know it's not my business but maybe she just hasn't had anyone actually be straight up honest with her about what she's doing and maybe it's time she hears it from someone she trusts?
I honestly couldn't care less if she never talked to me again over it. I'd be upset but I don't agree with the way she's put her new relationship on priority over her child. That little child deserves better from her. I can't believe her post about breaking the cycle. She's literally repeating it right now and abandoning her child... in the exact same house... with the exact same person... for a man... just like her mom did.

My question here concerns how to think about the next stage of my career.
I am a graduating PhD student, and lucky to have received a tenure track assistant professor (TTAP) offer for a faculty job at an R1 institution. Moreover, this program is ranked somewhere between #3-5 for the field. This is mostly relevant when it comes to quality of PhD students/ease of recruiting good students. It's an excellent program, but due to personal factors, I don't think it is somewhere I could stay for a long period of time, primarily due to the location.
The conundrum is the following: the programs that are in locations that would align with my personal situation (significant other and family) are the top 1-3 programs or they are quite a bit less-strong. So in some sense, they're a bit better than where I currently have an offer. Moreover, in my current search, I unfortunately did not receive an in-person interview from any of these programs (although I did get a zoom round interview).
In talking to lots of other people, it feels like this cycle may have been "less good" for me (I work in a fairly theoretical area, and due to some factors, such as the rise of LLMs, etc., it feels like many departments are searching in a more applied direction). And so there's lots of "routes" I could consider, however the main options seem to be:
1) Accept the TTAP offer I have, spend some time there, and in 3-5 years think about going on the faculty market again, with the hope of going to one of those top 1-3 programs.
2) Decline the TTAP offer I have, take a (fairly prestigious) postdoc opportunity, and re-apply in 1-2 years.
There's obvious tradeoffs: Option (1) is a lot safer, Option (2) is super risky---there's no guarantee I'd get an offer from a similar tier of institution when re-applying, and of course the standards are higher when applying post-postdoc versus final-year-PhD. As a postdoc I would have no teaching responsibilities while as a TTAP I would have a 1-1 teaching schedule. On the other hand, financially there's obviously a big pay gap between postdoc->faculty, but then again, it's only two-three years.
However, are there any other considerations I should keep in mind? Thanks a lot.

Ideally I would love to work for Goldenvoice and their guest relations or artist relations team - I'm mainly looking to gain ground work, experience, and connections for a future job in the music/event industry. I recently applied for the guest services position, but I'm nervous about how competitive it is (especially because I have no ties to Goldenvoice).
Does anyone have any tips on how to get into these positions? If these are less attainable, does anyone know of any other companies that hire for positions across the three weeks? Ideally the position I would want would be paid and provide lodging (not completely necessary), I'm not really looking for a volunteer position.
Any help is greatly appreciated! I also am open to working other festivals around Cali! Just trying to gain as much ground work experience I can here without sending myself completely broke from travel expenses.
