You know that famous scene on the bridge? The one where Gandalf faces down the Balrog of Moria? That moment has been playing on my mind lately, but not for the reason you might think.
See, in my version, social anxiety is the shadow. The bridge is every conversation I've ever had. And that desperate cry to flee? That's the voice in my head, every single time I feel that familiar panic rising. Except in my story, I'm not the brave wizard standing his ground—I'm the one running away, taking that command far too literally in every social situation I encounter.
The thing is, unlike the Fellowship who needed to escape to complete their quest, my running serves no noble purpose. It's pure self-preservation, triggered by something as simple as a lull in conversation.
You know that feeling when your brain just... shorts out? When someone's looking at you expectantly, waiting for you to say something—anything—and suddenly it's like every word you've ever known just disappears?
The worst part isn't even the blank mind—it's what comes next. That moment when I hear myself saying, "Well, great talking to you!" in this slightly-too-cheerful voice, knowing full well I'm about to make my escape. Again. It's like watching a car crash in slow motion, except I'm both the driver and the witness.
I've been thinking a lot about why I do this. Not just the surface-level stuff, but really trying to understand what's going on in my head. It's not that I don't want to connect with people—I really do. It's that the moment things get even slightly uncomfortable, my brain goes into panic mode. No thoughts, just static and an overwhelming urge to escape.
Here's what I've realised: I'm not actually afraid of the other person. I'm afraid of this emptiness in my head, this space where natural conversation should be. The silence feels heavy, and I just... leave.
But I had this realisation: What if I'm putting too much pressure on myself? What if conversations aren't supposed to be performances? What if it's okay to just... exist in that moment of uncertainty?
I've started making some mental notes about what might help:
- I need to learn to slow down. My brain's first reaction to silence is "time to leave," but what if I just... sat with it for a second?
- Maybe I could focus more on actually listening instead of worrying about what to say next. When I manage to do this (rarely), I've noticed the conversation somehow feels easier.
- I want to start treating awkwardness as a learning opportunity. Stay in it. Feel it. Maybe even get comfortable with it.
The thing is, I'm just tired. Tired of walking away. Tired of regret following every social interaction. Tired of wondering what connections I might have made if I'd just stayed put for five more minutes.
If you're reading this and thinking, "This is me," first of all, I get it because this really isn't fun, but also...I keep telling myself that this is a skill. I can get good at this. YOU can get good at this. It’s a matter of doing more of it, of seeing the patterns in conversations. I’ll write more about this over the next few days. I have an idea forming in my mind :-)

Hello everyone. I’m looking for some help with the current job market in Switzerland. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Biology (from Croatia) and a Master's Degree in Environmental Science (I specialized in Aquatic Sciences in Switzerland. I defended my thesis a month ago). I’m currently looking for a job here in Switzerland, but I’m stuck with my search and looking for a fresh perspective. I’ve done some student jobs during my university years, but I have no experience (aside from doing my master's thesis research, of course), and I am looking into both internships and full-time jobs. Anything really. The issue I encounter is that I’m located in an area full of biotech companies (which I don’t appear to be qualified enough for). I’ve applied to all the major companies that hire within my field regularly (like Nestle), all the biotech companies I could find, perfume companies, laboratories, big pharma companies, life science companies, and environmental consulting companies. Another issue is that I speak English perfectly, but my German and French are at a basic level. I’m located within the Vaud canton, and while I’d be willing to travel at this point because I’m so desperate to find anything, my mentor warned me that many companies will consider that and will not hire me because of distance. I’d love to get any insight/ideas/company suggestions because I’m unsure where to go from here. Thank you so much in advance!

We are looking to replace a Noritz for our single story 3k sq ft home.
To make a long story short, the Noritz went out last wk and we called the company who had installed it (before we were owners) to take a look. They said it just needed a new ignition module and replaced that, then the hot water was off again this Saturday. Candidly, they gave me the ick on competency and pricing at the time but it was an emergency on President’s Day so we just had them do the ignitor swap. They came again today and now suddenly they believe that many more things are wrong and it appears they just grabbed onto the first obvious option last wk.
We sent them on their way and called someone else who had been recommended to me in the meantime. Within 30 seconds this guy demonstrated knowledge and credibility, and I’m kicking myself for not just sucking up 2 days of cold water last wk vs taking the first appt I could get. He basically said, you have a 14-year old Noritz and loads of calcium build up and we could flush/service it but realistically it will be a matter of time until it’s done. Given that CA is restricting purchases of gas water heaters in the next few years, we may want to consider replacing. I believe him on the build up, as there was no whole home water filtration system until we moved in and our area has notoriously hard water.
Onto my 2 questions:
- He recommended a Navien unit. Thoughts on the quality and reliability of this brand?
- Is there any market for me to resell the 1-wk old Noritz igniter module? I’m sure it’s useful to someone but not sure where I’d post it.

I was recently cleaning up a box of negatives (slides) and discovered these amazing pictures. He was a cop and never did photography so when I asked about it he said someone just approached him one day and asked if he could model for practice. There were 20 or more but these were my favorite. I lightly touched them up but the colors were already absolutely amazing.
