Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against both games, in fact they are both my favorites, but I find the similarities that both games have in common very interesting.
- Both protagonist wake up in the middle of an accident in which they almost die.
- Thanks to the Mana event we know that the commander was the result of a scientific experiment to create super humans or super commanders and Jack the protagonist of Bioshock was also the result of an experiment to create a super human.
- You can literally replace the Big Daddys and Little Sisters with Chatterbox and Modernia and the dynamics are the same, the only difference is that Chatterbox is way smarter.
- Someone is moving the plot from the shadows, getting us to do what they want without us realizing it.
- The only thing the commander needs is to throw fire and lightning from his hands, but the Nikkes already do it for him.

2025.01.29 06:00 Fable_and_Fire Qs on lifestyle and hangouts. In your spare time, do you embrace hanging out in over-commercialized spaces because they're fun and active, or are you more likely to constantly seek out quieter spaces with lesser recognition / places where you can become a regular?
This is not a recommendation request, I was just curious about how people live.
I make jokes about TimeOut Tokyo robbing us of "hidden gems" and I'm sarcastic about overrated tourist traps as much as the next Tokyoite. Yet I have no qualms about hanging out at Disneyland or visiting silly concept cafes or the Pokemon Center. But I'm also a regular patron at a quiet 8-seater bar 15 minutes walking from Shinagawa station, which is nowhere near where I live. It feels like a paradox.
There are some places that I roll my eyes at and avoid completely if I can, but I don't know if other Tokyoites do the same or if they fully embrace the chaos. Are you constantly on the move to find new interesting places with lesser recognition as a sense of belonging? Do your personal hangouts shift over time?
For example, I used to have a place I drank at in Shibuya where people knew my name, but I find that post-COVID I don't go to Shibuya much to drink or shop anymore in general. I wasn't sure if long-term foreign students or early 20s still actually "hang out" there as well or if interest has shifted. I haven't been priced out and I still go out drinking, I just have no desire to go to that particular area to drink and my shopping is more curated online now.
I don't know if it's age-related or if there is a common awareness places have become saturated and certain demographics have just sought a hangout elsewhere. Kind of how we see the shift from Akihabara to Ikebukuro for anime fans, and now Ikebukuro is becoming just as overcrowded with growing awareness and marketing. Same with Harajuku from the late 1990s to early 2000s--you see all those old pictures of kids on the bridge, but not anymore. Takadanobaba rotary, in contrast, has been full of drunk college students since time immemorial. Maybe Shinjuku for office workers, too.
I would also assume that people who live farther out from the 23 wards would just want to set up shop in a local space near where they live. Do you guys still make the trip out to the 23 on weekends?
What kind of spaces makes Tokyo home for you? The main hubs or the cozy nooks?
Is everyone else a mix of easy access to pop culture shopping and places with a sense of belonging and feeling like you live here? Did you find a decent Denny's one day and just decide that was the place you would hang out?

Ahh yes, I used the dreaded word “woke” on Reddit.
By woke I mean fitting modern progressive social causes. Hear me out, I’ll make my case and you can disagree afterwards. (Or agree. 🤷♂️)
Here are some leader descriptions on the CIV website.
Amina - “she was said to take a lover in every city she vanquished, only to kill him in the morning. In uniting the lands, Amina conquered according to her own fashion – with a sword, not a man, at her side.”
Harriet Tubman - “Few have embodied the fight for freedom and equal rights as well as Harriet Tubman.”
Jose Rizal - “He first gained his reputation as a political activist in Europe, criticizing the Spanish rule of his homeland”
Tecumesh - “Together with his brother Tenskwatawa, he spread a message of unity and resistance among indigenous people”
Trung Trac - “When her husband was sentenced to death, Trưng Trắc and her sister fought on, gaining independence for three years before the Han counterattack.”
Amina’s description seems to fit into radical feminists notions of independence, Harriet Tubman’s description seems to justify her inclusion on the grounds of ideological causes instead of cultural impact, and then there are another 3 leaders that are valued based on the notion of “resisting oppression” - A common theme in progressive social spaces, one which should be included as it’s a real phenomenon in history but not at this level. Tecumesh’s description uses the word “indigenous people”. The problem with this is that Tecumesh didn’t unify “indigenous people” he united Native American tribes. Indigenous people is an umbrella term that captures every native person around the world. Tecumesh didn’t unify aboriginals to his cause. “Indigenous” is one these new age woke words that eliminates the uniqueness of individual tribes and merges them into a broader collective notion and ultimately an into an ideology. Worst off - most natives I know view this as very demeaning and dismissive of their unique identities and they don’t view it much differently than bigoted people attempting to dismiss their existence as losers of past struggles. But alas, this is more of a critique of progressive language finding its way in CIV marketing rather than his inclusion. I like him included in this game.
Lastly, Harriet Tubman is an awesome person. She risked death and re-enslavement to free more people in the Underground Railroad. Truly admirable. However - what she did not do was shift the culture in a drastic way as the noted Gandhi exception to the “civ leaders are political leaders” pseduo-rule did. Our Gandhi in USA is MLK. He would have been the acceptable choice. He dramatically shifted US culture and had an impact on our country’s trajectory - just like Gandhi did to India. And that’s why he would fit this concept. Harriet Tubman on the other hand, while truly admirable in her own right - was less of a cultural spearhead, and more of a supporting role in the grand scheme of slave liberation. Which brings us back to our exception leader - Gandhi. Him being used as an example of non-political leaders being allowed in CIV is a way to justify MLK as a political leader - not Tubman.
The crux of my concern - I haven’t been more excited for a game release in a long time. The steps the dev team is doing to address snowballing, micromanagement, city planning, and diplomacy is awesome. I anticipate this to be a big success from a game mechanics perspective. And I can’t wait to play it. I have heard one too many people talk about not buying this game because of the political narrative building in the game reflected by some of the leader selections and marketing behind it. I don’t believe all of the efforts be the designers and devs should be overshadowed by political narratives. I only hope that future leaders don’t suffer from the same concerns. I don’t want a mish mosh of progressive heroes from around the world intermixed with some “bad guys” to pretend to be balanced. Just add historical figures from historical civilizations and do what you always do best. Make a good game.

I swear, sleep used to be OP in earlier patches. You could just log out for 8 hours, and boom—full HP, energy bar maxed out, all debuffs cleared. Now? The Sleep mechanic is completely broken.
Takes forever to activate – I lie down, close my eyes, but the ‘Mind Racing’ debuff keeps me awake.
Random interruptions – Why does the ‘Overthinking’ event always trigger at 3 AM?
No proper recovery – Even after a full logout, I still wake up with the ‘Exhausted’ and ‘Unmotivated’ debuffs.
At this point, I’m convinced the Devs are pushing microtransactions for caffeine-based consumables. Anyone else experiencing this sleep nerf? Or is there some hidden questline I need to complete to fix it?

Early January I got an email from a certain company stating I was chosen to move forward with an interview. The recruiter said I would be hearing back in a few days to schedule it, but it’s been over 25 days and I haven’t heard back. I’ve sent 2 follow up emails and no response. What do I do? I really wanted to work here and it seems like I’m just not a priority :(
