I am almost a 3rd-year PhD student in Germany. I am working at a museum's institute, conducting my PI's project, and I have not yet enrolled at the university (I still have time for that). During my PhD, my 4-5 month-long experiments failed three times due to faulty equipment belonging to the institute. Each time, I started over, believing I could request an extension if needed. Two weeks ago, I asked my PI for an extension, but he refused, stating, "No one will take the blame for the bad equipment, and the institute's policy does not allow me to grant you an extended contract.". Also he does not want to write the project manager because I believe it will affect his reputation. Now, I have less than five months left, and all he seems to care about is his project and its results. I understand that I am working on his project, and completing the PhD is my responsibility, but these setbacks have really demoralized me. I also have nearly 50 unused vacation days because of these experiments. As a foreigner here, I need a contract to write my thesis and finish my PhD. What would you suggest? I cannot discuss the extension with my PI anymore, as it upsets him, so I am focusing on my work and trying to publish the papers required for my cumulative thesis. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

My husband is a car mechanic/tech and works at a large garage. He does not have his own business and as a rule hates doing private work for people. He had an issue with his own car and had to replace the engine. Much of the old engine’s auxiliary parts were okay so he sold them on eBay/marketplace and made over £1-1.5k. He couldn’t believe how easy this was and has now bought another car with the intention of either repairing or dismantling it for parts. Logic told me that the selling of the parts from his own car was okay from a tax viewpoint but this expansion could walk him into a CGT/income tax issue. I’ve since looked online and it seems 12 cars is suggested as the threshold to being a trader. I know you get a £3k exemption on CGT and HMRC suggests you don’t pay on your own car so I was presumably right in thinking his current sales are fine. I just can’t see how HMRC would allow someone to buy 11 say £500 cars and sell them or their parts for say £1500 and deduct the £3k CGT allowance and take that £8k profit tax free. Maybe I’m a pessimist but I just wanted to check this before he gets into it. Is there anything he should be aware of? Thanks
