I (15m) just had a pretty bad argument with my mother a few minutes ago as I’m writing the opening to this post. I genuinely can’t tell if I’m being dramatic or an asshole, I genuinely don’t know and some advice would be appreciated.
For context, I am a 15 year old neurodivergent kid (ADHD and more) who absolutely CANNOT handle reorganizations. I’ve expressed this to my mother previously, but she chooses to ignore it actively. She just tells me that “you’ll get used to it” and so forth. For me, it’s a very stressful thing that causes me to be nauseous and upset.
Two weeks ago, my room was messy. My mum told me to clean it, but I kept putting it off. Today, I just got home from my final exam (high school) and found that my mum had completely reorganized my room. The shelves, my bed, my desk, my drawers, both of my closets, and essentially went through all of my stuff. I got a bit upset and mentioned that she shouldn’t have touched a specific shelf in my room that I had cleared out for storage purposes.
After I said that, she flipped out and started yelling at me. Yelling can be somewhat of a trigger for me, so I was asking her “can you please stop yelling?”, but instead of doing that, she accused me of not listening. Eventually, I started crying, and she told me to “get over it” and that I “yell at her all the time.” I don’t yell at her all the time, I don’t think. I only yell if she can’t hear me, if she started yelling, or I yell and don’t realize because I struggle to control my volume.
She also found a small chest that’s like a mimic from D&D (bought it at a convention) which had a lot of pills in it. I was saving those up in case I wanted to overdose, because life had been going pretty horribly. Instead of asking if I was okay, because she knows I struggle with MDD (major depressive disorder) & suicidal stuff (she has seen my self harm scars) she yelled about how I was putting everyone else in danger.
I ask if I’m the asshole because:
- I had started it by not cleaning my room and remarking to her not to touch a specific shelf
- I yelled back at her, and I was told by her that I was “obnoxious and rude”
- I apparently wasn’t listening while she was yelling at me

I have had my fair share of problematic 80’s HR (I do not dare to read anything written from the 70’s backward) and while some stay true to their time, some also feel surprisingly modern, like they could stand the test of time.
I don’t have much issues with dubcon / noncon / slavery (probably as a non-American, it gives me more insight of the history of slavery in the old America) but I do get sensitive when it comes to cruel, bully heroes who taunt the heroine at every turn, emotionally stunted men who refuse to profess their love first, men who cheat (ughh any on page scene of the hero with other woman shall always be the bane of my existence!). And ohh, a doormat or a hellcat, spitfire heroine who always melt at the slightest brush of kiss. Like hello? You should conk him in the head everytime he mistreats you!
Like did the majority of public find this romantic back then? Or were some of you so deeply frustrated with how the MCs play out? I feel like, if I’d always find this problematic then, I’d still take the same stance on things the next 20, 30 years.
Would be interested to see the responses here!
