Hello my Catholic brothers,
I am currently in RCIA/OCIA and it is my first year experiencing the liturgical calendar and feast days.
On most parishes websites the mass times section has subsections for Monday-Friday masses and Holy Days among others. Which subsection applies for Holy Days not determined days of obligation? Such as St. Bosco or St. Brigid this weekend?

2025.01.31 03:20 Omegaproctis People Actually Like (YFN) Spider-Man? I don't understand
Before you immediately judge me, no I don't care about the politics.
I will say this though, it is obnoxiously, even violently liberal. I myself identify with the left, but this is just nauseating. It's in the designs, the acting, the characters, the "writing". Personally, I think escapism is dying if it isn't already dead. When I watch superhero content, I don't want to constantly have real world issues shoved in my face. The point is to escape into a power fantasy, why should I have to constantly think about how awful the real world is? And besides all that, I think producing content with any political bias, right or left, is bad for consumers. What happened to letting people judge moral dilemmas with their own opinions and perspectives?
Anyway, that's all I'll say about that because no other part of it really matters. I personally wish that the race and gender swapped characters were actually race and gender swapped for a character or writing reason, instesd of just tokenism, but I get it. It's trying to represent the ideal liberal world, and the ideal humanist world.
With that out of the way, the writing is godawful.
- There is no conflict other than random monsters with no identity, development, or significance that simply show up because the plot demands that Peter be Spider-Man.
- Every challenge Peter faces (missing the train, being late, being poor, not being popular) is either immediately solved for him or is ignored until it's relevance is entirely negligible
- Peter experiences no antagonism at school, everyone, even the jock characters, immediately love him and support him for no reason other than they heard he was smart, or that they were his lab partner once?
- Peter makes friends without trying, and his crush already thinks positively about him with barely any character development
- The jock character has no flaws that he can take personal accountability for (his only challenges are those society imposes on him) which makes him extremely dull, unable to be developed, and unrealistic. The only remotely interesting thing is that it implicates him as being a closeted gay man who might have a crush on Peter, but that isn't really relevant to being Spider-Man, or to developing the jock as a three-dimensional character, necessarily, because without growing through solving problems, any kind of development loses its significance. It would be interesting to see, for example, how being gay relates to black culture in urban America, or how being gay affects one's ability to inhabit a typically masculine role, or maybe how coming from a difficult neighborhood and facing discrimination affects your perspective on what the concept of Spider-Man existing really means.
- The show does this thing where they immediately give Peter access to a privelaged school with a small group of people just as capable, and are implicated to eventually become some type of hero or villain, which immediately takes away from an already super dull take on Peter
- Including a Wakandan character seems like a neat inclusion, until you consider the geopolitical ramifications in universe. The reason why Wakanda kept itself hidden in the MCU canon is because if the world was made aware of it, which it was, it would do anything and everything to steal it's vubranium, which it is doing, and it would immediately be forced to act offensively or defensively to prove it cannot be messed with. So including a Wakandan character implies Wakanda has revealed itself to the world, which then also must mean relations between Wakanda and the world must be strained or at the very least neutral. I find it hard to believe their international relations would be strong enough for a Wakandan internship at Oscorp, of all companies. Then we should imagine that in this universe Wakanda is actually a poor African country, but then that takes all the relevance out of even making the character Wakandan, which renders her identity redundant.
- The art style is unique but ultimately amounts to a simple 3D animation style that doesn't really do anything to separate itself consistently from anything else
- They capture an interesting and unique practicality to the Spider-Man equipment
- Making the Osborn's black FINALLY makes their traditionally awful hairstyle work, their darker skin and slightly larger features makes a cornrow type hairstyle actually look visually appealing
I'm not trying to insult anyone who enjoys the show, but I just don't get it. What about it do you enjoy so much? What do you find interesting and fulfilling about enjoying the show? What am I missing? Does anyone else agree? I find it immensely dissapointing, as if they wrote a structure for an idealized liberal New York that happens to have a Spider-Man and just forgot to write a story with character development and plot and conflict and intrigue and moral complexity along the way. I have less than no interest to keep watching, there's nothing for me to be invested in, and I'll probably forget those two episodes tomorrow. What am I missing?

Northgate Mall, which was built and opened in 1950, was my first ever local mall from my childhood until 2013. This place has since been my local mall after we moved from the North Seattle Area to the South Seattle Area. I grew up going to both of these malls. Northgate was also the first mall in the State of Washington, and in 2018-19 it was since slated to be redeveloped and a whole bunch of tenants left. I remember watching a movie a while ago which I would like to watch again, but I have no idea what it was called or who was in it. What I do know is it was probably mate in the last 20 years, I think it had something to do with terrorism or war, and I remember the badies had a heap of children going through shredded documents and were putting the pieces together. It might be possible that it was set in an African country, but I'm not 100% sure on this.
Any thoughts on what the movie was?

2025.01.31 03:20 Darkovika KH Shower Thoughts: the Dynamic between Sora and Riku
This is all gonna be obvious, Iām not going to be like writing some unthought of essay here, but Iāve just been thinking about it while I was replaying Kingdom Hearts.
I love stories and writing, so this is just me taking apart Kingdom Hearts like the storywriting obsessor that I am, lmfao. I first played this back when it first released, so I suddenly feel like Iām looking deeper.
The dynamic between Sora and Riku is classic and so well portrayed in such a short time in KH1.
Riku is the kid everyone relief on, all the time, constantly. We can probably imagine that uo until the start of the game, Riku was the ine solving everyoneās problems. He lead the group wherever they went. He was the oldest, the strongest, probably the smartest, and, likely, the most popular.
Tidus comments that āAt least Kairi has Rikuā, which probably also means there was a dynamic between all local kids that they could recognize that Kairi was an object of importance to both Sora and Riku. Riku was considered the most probable for her affections even by outsiders to the group- other kids on Destiny Islands- and he probably knew it. So did Sora. We can only imagine how uncomfortable this probably made Kairi.
Sora constantly lived in Rikuās shadow. Their contests were Soraās attempts to break free out of Rikuās shadow, but Riku kept him there. Soraās wins against Riku are hard won, and his wins against the trio- Tidus, Wakka, and Selphie- are equally as hard won. The race against Riku is a race you can absolutely fuck up in one single slip up. Your wins against him (unless youāre power leveling lol) are NOT easy, whereas his attacks hit hard, fast, and have finesse.
No matter how many times you beat him, you are not Riku. Sora is a silly, flailing boy with a toy sword going up against a powerhouse.
When the island goes balls up, Riku takes what he believes is the proper position: he is the savior. He is the leader. He is the one in charge who will save them all.
Except he doesnāt.
When he finds Sora, Soraās FLOURISHED. Outside of Rikuās shadow, heās found friends and taken his own leadership position, and heās on his own journey trying to find them. Instead of staying put and waiting for Riku to show up, he started working, and that upset Riku. His entire world and understanding of how this whole thing was supposed to go got fucked.
Then he finds Kairi by working with villains he knows full well give zero shits about him, and sheās missing her heart. This is right, at least- Sora didnāt find her. RIKU did. Riku was the one who saves Kairi, who deserves her. If we assume he saw that Kairi responded to Sora and not him, however, thatād only upset and confuse everything all over again. No matter what he does, he has zero control- no control over his situation, no control over Melficent, no real control over the darkness, no control over Kairi, and no control over SORA, his supposed best friend, his lackey, his shadow, the person who reaffirms his position as the strongest and the best and the leader.
On top of everything, HE WAS SUPPOSED TO GET THE KEYBLADE, this ultimate weapon, his birthright, HIS responsibility, HIS RIGHTFUL PLACE, and instead Sora got it. Why???? Why did Sora get this weapon of light? Why the fuck didnāt RIKU, the rightful leader? How infuriatingā¦ and how it fed his pride and ego and the shadows in his heart when it went to him from Sora. For one sweet moment, Sora was inferior again, where he was supposed to be. Thatās right. Thatās how it should be. He was right. Heās not wrong. Soraās the wrong one, the fuck up, the one who didnāt follow the plan. He NEEDS Riku.
Except Sora takes the keyblade back, and that shatters everything he understands. It may have been meant for himā¦ but it didnāt WANT him. Like Kairi, the keyblade chose Sora.
When things go tits up AGAIN and he loses total control, thatās when he finally realizes that the whole time heās made everything about himself.
Obviously his path also shadows and mirrors that of Terra, but thatās outside the scope of just KH1.
I always loved the dynamic between Sora and Riku, because thereās so much great storytelling there.
