So, joined a new group with a first-time GM. We've been discussing the sort of characters we want to play and here's what the others have chosen:
- Spores Druid
- Artificer with a Construct and a mid-ranged weapon (pistol, crossbow, etc.)
- Blood Hunter in melee
- Warlock of some flavor
- We're using point buy and published WotC content is allowed.
- I'm a bit concerned about the survivability of the current roster (ex. able to take damage, heal, deal with or apply buffs/debuffs).
- I really prefer to have darkvision. It feels better not having to worry about it and it's a "quality of life" thing.
- I don't like leaving odd ability scores unless I have an idea for a +1 feat. There are always good ones to pick from, though.
- The character concept would make sense to have at least one decent mental score but not a dealbreaker.

They expect a ruling in 90 days or so, around late April, early May timeframe.
Depending on how fast this moves and how fast SCOTUS grants cert (assuming they do which may or may not happen, but given recent events, I wouldn't put it passed them), oral arguments for this case will likely take place in either the 2025-2026 or 2026-2027 term with a decision in June 2026 or June 2027 (2026 if SCOTUS pounces on it and Kim Davis and her legal team move fast, 2027 if the process is closer to the timeline we saw in Dobbs which took nearly a year for SCOTUS to grant cert after they appealed).
Again, this is assuming SCOTUS takes up cert. Can't say whether or not they will or won't, but given the pressures with places like ID asking for SCOTUS to reverse OvH, I would lean on there being a higher likelihood of that.
This gets ruled in one of 3 ways.
- OvH is overturned, government officials are free to refuse to issue same-sex marriage licenses if they violate their religious beliefs, and now Bostock is in a precarious position potentially (Amy Barrett was not on the court during Bostock, RBG was).
- OvH is upheld, but barely or weakened, and the opinion is written to allow more leeway for government officials to refuse same-sex marriage licenses to LGBT couples, and at least one of the justices (probably Thomas) writes a concurrence or dissent with instructions or hinting on how the next lawsuit related to OvH could overturn it.
- Nothing happens.
(the top two scenarios I listed are most likely imo if it were to come before the court).
The Respect for Marriage Act is still the law of the land. There are not enough votes in the house or senate (senate is trickier if filibuster is done away with) to overturn it at this time despite it being under GOP "control" (I put quotes there because it's a 220-215 split, only need 3 of the 39 GOP reps who voted on the RFMA to uphold it to torpedo a repeal or DOMA 2.0).
Should OvH be overturned in 2026, that will make a blue wave even more likely come midterms and, while it's a long shot, could help put the senate in play for flipping (same-sex marriage won't be the only thing that could drive turnout).
That said, now is the time (if you haven't already) to start thinking about what can be done to help protect your rights should OvH be overturned and serve as a backstop if somehow the RFMA goes away (unlikely imo in the near or medium term, but you can never be too careful). These include things like going to a lawyer and drafting up wills, POA, other legal agreements, etc.

I'm moving out of my parents house for the first time, and I'm doing it alone. I'm a woman in my 20s, pretty anxious and paranoid. The house I viewed yesterday was really cute in a great location, but I discovered that there is no alarm, which I'm used to having at home. I see a lot of tips online about getting dogs, installing cameras and ring doorbells and motion lights etc, but it would be a rental so I wouldn't be allowed do any of that. I also live in a country where guns and pepper spray are illegal, I'm not physically strong, and there is no bedroom door for a last line of defense. I love the place but I can't stop having graphic visions of what a home invasion might look like in that house.
Would it be smarter to write it off and only look at higher-floor apartments instead? I don't want to miss a good opportunity because I'm living in fear, but I also don't want to be constantly paranoid while I'm alone at home.

I’m sorry but the step that requires everyone in the aether is nearly impossible in public matches. Every game I try it either some guy refuses to enter the dark aether or they leave mid escort. The time everyone is in the aether someone ends up not being close enough or takes the zombies away from the orb. This step is just super frustrating I know I should just play with some people that will help but I just want to chill and play I don’t want to look for a group. I might not understand how this step works but it fails every time.
