Hi All,
I recently sold $100,000 of investments (mix of short term and long term capital gains) to pay off my student loans and am wondering the best way to approach the tax liability, given that it is January.
My wife and I are firmly in the 24% tax bracket after accounting for both our incomes, and we file married jointly. I am aware that we will owe the NIIT of 3.8% on any income over $250k for our MAGI.
My current plan it to have greater than 110% of my 2024 total tax withheld from my paycheck to meet the safe harbor rule and not make estimated tax payments.
For the sake of argument, let's say that I used $70,000 to pay off the loans and have the remaining $30,000 in a brokerage account in cash to cover taxes (I realize my tax liability will be less than that).
Since you can use capital losses to offset capital gains, does that imply there is no risk as it relates to my tax liability in investing that $30,000 for the entire year, as long as I sell in 2025 if my investment is at a loss?
I want to ensure that I do not invest the tax liability, end up at an investment loss, and not have the money to pay the taxes on the $100,000 sale that I already made (I am fine with the investment losing value as long as that reduces my tax burden).
It feels like this isn't correct because it essentially makes my investment risk-free as long as I don't lose more than my tax liability.

Luna is 5 and she will only eat this food and she is almost out. I cannot find it anywhere. Petco, Amazon, chewy, are all out of stock and PetSmart doesn't have it... I have tried other foods she just won't eat it. She won't even eat the turkey version of this brand. Any suggestions if I run out?

I heard he had a genuinely great mind. People say he was funny as fuck, smart as fuck, and that he loved to have fun with everyone around him. I know he was one of the major musical forces behind the band too. You can tell how much they are devastated by losing him even to this day. Listening to the songs they write about him says it all too. I never knew him but I can feel their love for him in all their songs.
Anyone here ever get the chance to speak with him or hang with him? What was he like? What's your biggest memory about him? I bet he was a truly wonderful human being.

2025.02.01 22:09 Cupcakes_4_All Help with curtains color and possibly fireplace wall accent
 | We bought this house in September and I'm wanting to spruce up the living room. It's a large open floorplan and everything is so BEIGE which I'm personally not a fan of, but changing it would involve repainting a ton of the house which is a bigger project than I want to take on. I obviously need new drapes in the proper length (and I plan to move the curtain rod up near the ceiling and make it a bit wider and move the artwork). The window is 3 large connected windows. I've also been toying with the idea of painting the wall around/above the fireplace (but not above the bookshelves) a red to break up the beige, you can see some swatches i have taped up. But I'm just stuck with how to make it work. What color of drapes should I get? They will be mostly closed due to glare on the TV. So it will be a big block of whatever I choose. I also use 87 octane since the manual says "runs perfectly fine" BUT also in the manual it says check what elantra you have yk which is confusing 🤣

I'm just curious what other people are thinking about what the notion of 51 silos means and where the door leads to?
I haven't read the books and this is my guess, just curious what guesses other people have.
There are 51 silos
50 are filled with people and setup the same.
All of these silos have a door that connect to the 51st silo.
The 51st silo controls everything and communicates with the leaders of all other silos. They advise the head of IT of each silo and give them directives. These orders are to be followed and if they are not, extreme measures will be taken. That is why Tim Robbins always acts like he has no choice, even when his choices seem nonsensical and against his own nature. The head of IT is summoned from time to time by the 51st silo, they must go and speak and come back and do what they were told to do.
No silo is in control, the 51st silo is in control of everyone and is given the task of ensuring the silos actually survive until the world is ready again.
I'm guessing the story continues along until the other silos can communicate with each other and revolt against the 51st silo. They take it down and gain their individual freedom until the world is safe to go into, again. Either the show will end on them gaining their freedom or the show will end years after the revolt, showing them walking to the fresh air outside, for the first time.
I suppose I could be way off, but that is what my imagination tells me...and I'm be completely satisfied if that is the story.

2025.02.01 22:09 Ahhhhwhatsinthebox Do all JRPG follow the same formula like Persona 3 Reload?
I'm about 5 hours into this game and it's an absolute snooze fest, why the hell this is highly regarded is beyond me.
Regualr cutscenes, constant button mashing to get through dialogue, even when enabling "auto" some text does not cycle automatically, how dumb. Going through days I feel like they literally have no substance to them, you listen to a load of nonsense for several days, wait for the dark hour and that's so infrequent. 90% of my playtime so far, I have barely even used any other button besides X.
The characters, storyline and atmosphere feel pretty awesome. But why is it so dialogue heavy? I want to actually play the fucking game.
This is my first JRPG, are they all following this same structure? Because I know for sure I will never touch one again if so.
