This is a repost, so forgive me if some words used is outdated. I am not writing this for sympathy or as a sob-story, but I thought I would at least offer advice from my own experience.
Very long post ahead!
A little background story: I graduated from polytechnic some years back, got a GPA that was enough to be qualified for the Dean’s List and matriculated to NTU academic year 2019/2020
Now this may all seem fair game, but my 5 years (yes 5 years) were the worst in my life.
From all my life till O-levels, I wasn’t a studious student. In fact I never cared about studies. But all that changed in polytechnic 1.2 (in 1.1 I was still lazy but I decided to bulk up). For 1.2 to 2.1, I was able to work hard to score all As, and even earn a director’s list. I had never known a world full of happiness and so much hope for the future back then. I envisioned myself heading to NUS Electrical Engineering and maybe take a double major with Computer Science.
Until semester 2.2 came, and that was where things began to fall apart. This is unfortunat, but I had ex-classmates from secondary who always perceived me as less-mentally developed for their own reasons. When they heard I was doing well-better than them, they really took the necessary steps to destroy the world I had known so much. I couldn’t have my lunch in peace since they would always come to look for me and spread rumours that people started to perceive me differently [I was an introvert back then]. Even the way home after class was hell As they would hit me and block me from exiting. Reporting them only made things worse and my mental health deteriorate. There was no way for me to switch classes, and this caused my grades to drop. Sufficient enough to earn the top 10% but not the CGPA I envisioned myself to have. My parents weren’t supportive either since they perceived my suffering as a sign that I was not a man, and they had the idea that mental health doesn’t mean anything.
Now here is the most fatal and fateful mistake I had ever made: NUS actually offered me a place to study in their course. Unfortunately, those people who harassed me really threatened me with physical harm if I were to enrol in NUS Or NTU engineering.Being the immature teen I was back then, I caved into their fears and enrolled into NTU. I won’t reveal the course, but it was in School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences.
For the few years in NS I kept my problems to myself, as I didn’t want to bring unnecessary trouble.
The came enrolment in 2019, which would stretch into 2024, the worst 5 years of my life. My degree was way too much for someone not used to it, and I couldn’t handle the workload. I was required to come home everyday from NTU [I live in the other side of the island], which was fair but adjustment was way too much. I couldn’t study as well as I could in polytechnic, and eventually I took an LOA from the exams in 1.1. I went to the student care manager but she was incompetent and made me feel worse. I wanted to reapply in NUS, realising my mistake but I was also wrongfully told to reapply after 1 year by the admin staff.
You may ask, why not just accept NTU? A degree is a degree and no employer cares about which school you are from. If you look at my situation, just because of some trash people, I threw my potential all away for a degree I had remote interest in.
For the next 4 years from 2020-2024, every time the window for NUS transfer opens. I would rush to apply. All, including appeals were rejected. It didn’t help that being in NTU become a source of trauma and I couldn’t study without breaking down. I had no one to turn to, religion, counselling and “advice” from the NUS admin staff and NTU never helped.
Soon I became toxic and would always break down and cry. When in polytechnic I would always study till 5am, in NTU I always did it till 9-10pm before sleeping. It became a mad rush to try to do well but eventually when the exams and tests draw near I would always throw my hands up and give up. I lost control of my emotions and thoughts. I didn’t want to withdraw because I would risk being in a worse place then before, and transferring within NTU would not take the trauma away. I supposedly had 5 years to score close to all As in NTU for NUS to consider me, but it was pure torture being in NTU. I just couldn't stop crying, and even prayed for NTU to just expel me so I wouldn’t have to see it again at the very least. Even my experience in NTU wasn’t that great as it advertised and peers were slightly toxic.
Fast forward to today, I have graduated a few months ago. However unlike many others who are probably happy, I don’t even want any congrats, nor even wear the gown. My incompetent councillor congratulated me on WhatsApp , but I told her off for her incompetence I suffered when I was a freshman.
The NUS office of admissions staff has not been of any use so far, though this time I am meeting them again with more preparedness, and I hope they will be better equipped to help.
If not, I probably would have no choice but to enrol In NTU engineering sometime in the future and transfer again to NUS.
Money issues would probably be discussed another time, though I seriously won’t mind a bank loan.
Here are a few things you should know when University starts, and things I wished I knew beforehand.

  1. Choose a degree AND/or school you really like. And make sure it fits in with your strengths and background. It is better to be safe than sorry. It is sometimes really better to be in something you don’t like but are a prodigy at it rather than be in something you think you like or can do well in but is mediocre in. Do not blindly listen to others saying this course sucks or that school sucks. Only you know yourself, even more than your parents. Remember it is can be easy to downgrade from NUS to NTU, but vice versa is difficult.
  2. If you are within two weeks on your school life, you can drop out and you won’t have to pay any school fees. Even if you drop out too late, if it is within one semester, you can reapply to any degree you want and admission would be based solely on your poly/A-level results. If you have the slightest doubt about your course, JUST RUN and drop out.
  3. Except for NUS, you can still apply to other local universities under the normal JC/ Poly tab. They treat you like a normal applicant. You just have to declare that you have used up one/ how ever many semesters of your government subsidised tuition fees
  4. Use Course Hero and Google to find past year tutorials and lecture notes uploaded by kind souls. Look through the later notes e.g week 4 and beyond. Be honest if this is something you can fit into. If you can, congrats. If not, do not risk it and drop out.
  5. Do not be fooled into thinking that the module or course is manageable because of what is covered in the first two weeks. The professors will always cover the very basics first which are super easy but will get really worse over time. Also do your own homework and research on the degree and do not rely only on the open house advertising, which hides the worst of the course. A Professor in my degree shared that my school tries to avoid sharing the course materials to avoid the risk of a very low enrolment.
  6. Literally, do not blindly give a damn about what trash people or naysayers, who are just out to bring you down, say. If you were to lose enjoyment of your life because of them and reporting them to the school is not helping, turn to the police for help. Don’t worry about wasting their time, at the very least the police will advise you on what to do.
  7. Lastly, you are the best weapon you can have against life setbacks. If you are in a course you hate [and remember sometimes you have to use what you have] and want to transfer out, put in all the effort you can throw into understanding the material. Build your own invisible wall around any setbacks and distractions and disappear till your efforts pay off. If your friends are really your friends, they will understand and be waiting for you with flowers and congrats when you climb your own mountain. If you have problems, share them early with someone competent and do not wait till it is too late, like what I did.
TLDR: Caving into my fears due to threats against trash people and enrolling to NTU was the worst mistake I ever made. There were many things and lessons I wished I knew, so I am leaving them here on this subreddit.

2025.02.02 04:50 MelodicBet1 Finally getting around to playing this...

So....I downloaded and played ch 1 on steam pretty much when it first came out. Unfortunately at the time ch 2 released my computer wouldn't run it. Fast forward that computer died and we got a new one. The game runs beautifully except I'm now fully trained on controller gaming and just can't do mouse and keyboard any more. So I just spent a great deal of time figuring out how to get my button mapping just so through steam's template thing and have gotten through ch 1 (figured I'd restart from the beginning) and what I believe is most of ch 2 (I'm at the weird timed power restore puzzle where the red tape and vcr are located).
I then died multiple times trying to.do said puzzle. Decided to call it quits.
Then my husband said 'ya know they're on ps5 right?'
Welp. They are. So $40ish later I now have ch 1-3 on ps5. I was delightfully surprised to see easy button mapping in ch 1. Was able to get it just how I wanted it.
Then I opened ch 2 and ch 3. No button mapping? Why not? In the shop it said they added accessibility features to the game so it seems the ability to change button layouts would be part of that.
My main problem is left stick sprinting. I need a separate button for sprint ya'll. I set it it to R1 in both steam and ps5 ch1 and it's not like l1 or r1 are actually being used for anything. So why not allow button mapping? (My second problem is wishing that the stupid grab hand could be toggled to be hold the button to hold onto a thing and automatically let go of it when released. I keep messing up the swinging jumps because my dumb hand won't let go of the swing bars. I literally either just keep swinging or let go too late and fall into the pit. Yeah so there's a reason I decided to quit at that specific puzzle on steam lol)
