2024.11.25 06:30 Excellent-Habit-6864 AITAH for taking my ex to court and filing for child support?
Let me just start by saying these past couple years have been such an emotional roller coaster. My ex dipped out on me during my pregnancy, left the state and went on a traveling extravaganza for over a year. I decided to block him during the end of my pregnancy because of how unsupportive he was which also meant missing the birth of his child. Post birth, he “tried” to move back to my state yet he was also having conversations with me saying he wanted to terminate his parental rights. In the end, all emotions aside, I decided to file for child support because I realized that his absence will affect the quality of life I am able to provide as a single mom. When I filed for child support, I was well aware and mentally prepared myself that it meant giving him legal rights to our baby. I also reasoned with myself to agree to letting our child visit him during summer and breaks in his state when she gets older. Well we just had our court date and I left completely shocked. He willingly gave me full physical and legal custody. I think he made the final choice for many reasons… He’s scared. He threw up his hands and said eff it! Get me off this roller coaster. I also believe that he was coming from a loving place wanting our child to live a normal life and not hopping from home to home. He’s out of state. He missed the birth and continues to miss out on a lot of firsts. He doesn’t have an emotional bond.
I can’t help but to feel extremely guilty about this entire situation and self blame. Something in me feels responsible for helping to foster a good relationship between him and our baby but another part of me feels that he’s a big boy these are his choices. I shouldn’t have to hold your hand. And at this point, I feel like I’ve tried that route since day 1 of my pregnancy and it got me to a bad place mentally and spiritually. I gotta protect my peace too. I also feel extremely guilty about the set child support amount (over $1000). While I’m the one completely raising our child while he has all his freedom, I do understand that that is his hard earned money - in all honesty, filing for child support had all good intentions in being able to provide as a single mom. I can’t help but to feel like the bad guy in this entire situation and I don’t know why. Should I reach out to try to encourage a relationship between him and our child? Or just leave it alone? Why do I feel so guilty about child support when I’ve been struggling these past MONTHS. AITAH?
