2024.11.25 06:45 throwaway6561739 I spend the majority of my time daydreaming yet I can’t write for the life of me.
Hi! I am not exaggerating when I say I spend majority of my time daydreaming. I almost always have some daydream going on, whether a brief conversation or whole plot, it’s happening.
Anyway, I’ve always had an interest in writing, and you’d think MD would help, but nope! Not at all. Even though I’ve created countless storylines, I can’t create a cohesive story for the life of me. I can’t get a story from A to B, only the start, random bits, and the end. I struggle fleshing out worlds. I find myself to be lacking creatively (surprisingly), and most importantly, I’m just not good at writing. My vocabulary isn’t very strong, all of my descriptions and stuff feels bland and cliche. I can’t do dialogue. It’s just never good. I always reread my writing and feel so confused. I recognize it’s not good, but I don’t know how to fix it!
It’s so frustrating!!! I feel so dumb. I don’t understand why I struggle so much to write a good story with good vocab and descriptions!!! Ugh!!
I know this post may seem a little unfitting for this sub, but I feel like it fits personally. The reason being is because I’m almost mad at myself because my MD isn’t helpful enough. It’s like, it helping me write could be the one thing it ACTUALLY does that’s good for me (as everything else has its negatives) but apparently not lol
Oh well, just a quick vent haha!!

The forks itself still bounce a little bit, although I cant tell like what the original forks were like since I totally forgot the feeling. I don’t have a picture at the moment but whenever I touch the fork, this weird almost like grease substance stains my hands. I never thought to post this since I didn’t think it would matter but since I ride to school and I’m not trying to die on the road from a fork malfunction.

The View from Oregon – 316
Re: Permutations of Devolved Industrial Production
Friday 22 November 2024
Dear Friends,
The non-integrated industrial production that I described in last week’s newsletter can be rendered in considerably greater detail by making a rudimentary taxonomy both of technologies and industrial production. I have mentioned elsewhere that we lack a good taxonomy of technology, so I will offer a taxonomy of technology based on the needs of the present problem of illuminating non-integrated industrial production, with no concern for its wider application, as follows:
- Mechanical technologies: a steam locomotive is a mechanical technology, which for present purposes is distinguished from the other taxa by involving no electrical systems. Needless to say, contemporary locomotives make extensive use of electrical systems. I suspect that if one takes a look at a newly manufactured locomotive, it will be as encrusted with computers (integrated circuit technologies; no. 5 below) as any other contemporary technology; this is in accord with what we know of assimilating technologies, which I discussed in newsletter 274.
- Electro-mechanical technologies: an internal combustion engine using spark plugs or equivalent is an electro-mechanical technology. A diesel engine is an internal combustion engine that is a purely mechanical technology in its original iteration, as it requires no electrical systems, but an internal combustion engine employing spark plugs to fire the aifuel mixture requires an electrical system. An electrical motor or generator is an electro-mechanical technology, as were analog telephones, record players (though a Victrola was a purely mechanical technology), cassette tape players, and CD players. Electro-mechanical technologies were ubiquitous in the twentieth century, but are being eclipsed by integrated circuit technologies. There was an interesting short article in 2021, “The End of the Electromechanical Era” by Elliot Williams, that calls the elecromechanical era, “…a short era in human technological development.” The substitution of integrated circuit technologies for electro-mechanical technologies exemplifies that I have called the replacement thesis (cf. newsletters 170, 267, and 268), according to which biocentric civilizations and are transformed into technocentric civilizations through the replacement of biological constituents with technological constituents, but the replacement thesis admits of further elaboration (just as a taxonomy of technology admits of further elaboration). More on this below.
- Electrical technologies: a light bulb is an electrical technology, and is characterized by the absence of moving parts (as distinct from electro-mechanical technologies) and the use of electrical systems (as distinct from mechanical technologies). Electrical technologies, as I am employing the concept here, could be understood as a rudimentary electronic technology (next up below), and an electronic technology could be understood as a more complex form of an electrical technology. A strict interpretation of electronic technologies would exclude all moving parts, which in turn would exclude anything with a speaker or a microphone; I don’t think that this strict interpretation would be as helpful as a loose interpretation, whereas in regard to electrical technologies the absence of moving parts is an important distinction from electro-mechanical technologies.
- Electronic technologies: a radio or a television is an electronic technology, as also were early computers. The addition of transistors to electronic technologies represents a transitional technology from electronic technology to solid state or integrated circuit technology. A transistor is a solid state component, but the full power of transistors was not realized until multiple transistors were engineered together in an integrated circuit.
- Solid state/integrated circuit technology: a contemporary computer or cell phone is a solid state or integrated circuit technology, which is characterized by silicon wafer construction and the absence of moving parts. As with electrical technologies, a strict interpretation would exclude the speakers, microphones, and spinning hard drives of computers, but here again a looser interpretation is more useful. Solid state technologies were once distinguished from the use of vacuum tubes, which performed a function similar to that of transistors. Today, vacuum tubes have been all but eliminated with the exception of certain specialized applications, like amplifiers for electric guitars, where the smooth form of distortion from a clipped sine wave is prized, and amateur radio hobbyists, for whom part of the appeal is the ability to reconstruct classic technologies, which in this case are vacuum tube radio transmitters and receivers.
This taxonomy is not intended to be exhaustive. It isn’t really applicable to biotechnologies, and it would be an interesting and parallel inquiry to look into the possibilities of the use of non-integrated biotechnologies; such an inquiry would be a necessary component of understanding technology in the wake of supply chain failures and the re-localization of production, but for the moment I am going to leave this aside.
Above I mentioned my use of what I call the replacement thesis. The replacement thesis involves several distinct forms of replacement: the replacement of qualitative concepts with quantitative concepts that are tractable for empirical science; the replacement of natural materials by engineered materials; the replacement of natural processes by engineered processes, and, as implied above, the sequential replacement of earlier stage technologies by later stage technologies, which latter are usually quantitatively less mechanical and more electronic. With the taxonomy above, I can now state this latter mechanism of the replacement thesis as when 1 is replaced by 2, 2 is replaced by 3, and so on. This isn’t a perfect sequence because of the many exceptions that have to be factored in, but it is at least a rough-and-ready characterization of the ongoing replacement of one technology by a later permutation.
Anyone who has lived since the industrial revolution has seen this kind of ongoing technological replacement in their lifetime. My grandmother’s generation saw the replacement of the mechanical technology of horses and carts replaced by the electro-magnetic technology of automobiles; my mom’s generation saw the replacement of electro-mechanical telephones with integrated circuit cell phones; I’m old enough to have used rotary dial electro-mechanical telephones, and now I am alive to see the ongoing virtualization of many processes, now taking place in a cloud where no mechanical technology is even relevant. I am going to call this
forward replacement, and I will contrast it to backward or
retrograde replacement. In retrograde replacement, the process runs backward, with electronic components increasingly replaced by electro-mechanical or mechanical components.
So now I’ve given a taxonomy of technologies relevant to non-integrated industrial production, next I need to give a taxonomy of industrial production—again, non-exhaustive and postulated purely for the purpose of an exposition of non-integrated industrial production:
- Sourcing raw materials
- Refining materials
- Producing components from materials
- Assembling components into end use products
To make this a bit more concrete, imagine the stages of producing a sword (since I mentioned Ulfberht swords last week): 1) finding and mining iron ore, as well as any other chemical components that will used be in the finished steel, 2) smelt the iron ore to melt, purify, and alloy the iron to make steel, 3) heat it and beat it on an anvil, as well as the steps to make the other parts, like the pommel, 4) assemble all parts into a finished sword ready for use. Because all stages of industrial production themselves involve the use of technologies, this taxonomy can’t be isolated from my taxonomy of technologies; indeed, each stage in my taxonomy of industrial production can be treated in terms of its technology taxon, and it would be possible to cobble together a production process in which these taxa of industrial production employ distinct technological taxa at each stage. This will be relevant to an exposition of non-integrated industrial production.
The example that I used last week to discuss non-integrated industrial production was the century-old tradition of cottage industry gunsmithing in the Khyber Pass, producing what are commonly called Khyber Pass copies. After last week’s newsletter, a friend told me that this kind of non-integrated production also takes place in the mountainous regions of Yemen. I was not surprised to hear this. Where an industrial infrastructure is lacking, it is neigh-on inevitable that local craftsmen will attempt to produce articles of consumption either unavailable locally or produced at a cost that makes them unobtainable at the local level. This points to something important: integrated industrial production produces high quality manufactures at a proportional price, and, in doing so, they produce proof of concept that a particular article can be manufactured. Once we know that a given article (like a firearm) can be manufactured, others can attempt to manufacture the same article. Most Khyber Pass copies are the result of reverse engineering existing firearms, but we can also posit the possibility of non-integrated industrial production based on idea diffusion: the idea of some manufacture travels to where this manufacture is not available, so an attempt is made to produce the manufacture simply knowing that it is possible. This has been the case with nuclear weapons. Other nation-states have not (to my knowledge) been given examples of functional nuclear weapons to reverse engineer, so they have to attempt to manufacture a nuclear weapon based on knowledge in the public domain plus whatever proprietary knowledge is developed by internal research.
The entirety of contemporary industrialized civilization is one enormous existence proof of an industrialized economy and the goods that it can produce. In the aftermath of the failure of planetary-scale industrial integration, the race will be on to produce as much as possible of integrated industrialized economies directly and locally—always with the memory of the industrial production that was, as a spur to what still remains possible. Western civilization has been here before. The Roman Empire represented an integrated economy of production across the Mediterranean Basin, and while ancient civilization did not make the breakthrough to industrialization as we understand it today, it did have a industrial infrastructure in the sense of what Eugen von Böhm-Bawerk called roundabout production processes, in which different stages of industrial production are handled by different industries. That is to say, the four taxa of industrial production I named above might be (though are not necessarily) the work of different industries. In the aftermath of the collapse of the western Roman Empire, industries were re-created on manorial estates, which had to become locally self-sufficient after the widespread failure of trade networks and economic institutions. This local mirroring of industry involved a reduction in the scale of industry, the substitution of local materials, and a loss of complexity.
Note: I know that “non-integrated industrial production” is an awkward phrase, and it would sound better to speak in terms of distributed industrial production, since in a condition of non-integrated production formerly centralized manufacturing becomes geographical distributed, but I didn’t use this because distributed production could also be used to describe roundabout production processes. Another possible term would be devolved industrial production, since in a non-integrated industrial environment, production processes will be devolved to regional and local industries. Even in feudal economies this geographically regionalized division of industrial production (which is the division of labor writ large) would be divided among the miners, who would dig iron ore, the men who would produce charcoal in a kiln, and the blacksmith, who would use both the ore the charcoal to manufacture a sword.
We can identify a large number of permutations of non-integrated production based on the technology taxon employed in production, the degree of retrograde replacement involved, and the taxa of industrial production devolved to local industry. This all comes down to the question: What kinds of technology of our contemporary industrialized infrastructure can be replicated by non-integrated industry? This is a simple question, but given the complexity of the production process for something like an AK-47, a proper breakdown of the question presents many possibilities. In the immediate aftermath of a failure of planetary-scale industry, there would be much more cannibalization going on than the sourcing and refining of raw materials. If, for example, someone wanted to construct some electro-mechanical technology, just about anyone could learn to wind a transformer or an electrical motor by hand, but producing the wire from which one winds a coil requires more infrastructure and specialized knowledge. If it were sufficiently important, drawing wire could be developed on a geographically regional basis, but in the short term cannibalizing wire from other sources could be much quicker and more efficient.
The production of integrated circuits, the last of my technological taxa, requires a sophisticated industrial infrastructure that would be difficult, but not impossible, to replicate on a geographically regional scale. Photolithography in a cleanroom is beyond the capacity of most cottage industry. However, vacuum tubes can be produced at a lower technological level of attainment, and vacuum tubes can serve some of the functions of transistors. While it probably wouldn’t be a requirement for a wasteland warlord to build an ENIAC-style computer with vacuum tubes, being able to produce enough vacuum tubes to build radio transmitters and receivers would conceivably be both a realistic goal and sufficiently important to expend the necessary resources, and this would be an example of retrograde replacement in order to retain a certain form of technological complexity.
All of this could be treated in much more detail; the possible permutations of non-integrated industrial production are vast. Non-integrated industrial production poses interesting questions such as whether technologies never produced before the later stages of industrial production could be produced in some form through retrograde replacement. In such cases we would not be modeling industrial production on past industries, in the sense of that which existed prior to industrialization (like forging swords), but on items of manufacture only produced after industrialization, and widely believed to be dependent upon a certain level of industrial infrastructure development. How far can retrograde replacement be pushed? This remains to be seen, and this is in itself an interesting problem. Given the vast number of possible permutations of non-integrated industrial production, a post-integrated world might have a more complex industrial infrastructure in some ways that our current centralized and integrated industrial infrastructure. Insofar as we know that unprecedented emergent complexities arise from prior complexities, it is possible that a non-integrated industrial infrastructure might eventually produce technologies we cannot now imagine. This makes me hopeful for the future.
Best wishes,
Nick
