2024.11.25 07:50 SprezzaturaVigilante Joel and Brad (Spoilers, and I'm harsh on Brad). Sorry for the thesis lol
Joel is losing sooo much of himself by being with Brad, and is willfully trying to ignore and sublimate who he is and what he needs and wants. Like by throwing away his precious things...it's heartbreaking. He's settling on so much, like the bro church group and Brad's church that he dislikes. He's doing everything Brad wants bc Brad is so quietly insistent and domineering in a scary way (to me at least). Brad is like a disapproving father figure with rage issues (like the car incident where he made Joel pull over so he could yell at the guy who cut him off). He seems like he's always simmering to me. He has this constant quiet disapproval of most things about Joel and his friends.
Joel is also compromising by not being around women, more genderqueer, and more feminine-leaning people, which is who he prefers. He prefers feminine people and things, he voiced how much he hates that male bible study group, and it was FULL of men who ranged from toxic (the bully, who didn't even apologize) to clueless and ignorant at best. And Brad is clueless and stays clueless, even though Joel keeps bringing up what he needs, Brad stays clueless. He doesn't pay enough attention to Joel, he seems largely stuck in his own routine and his own little world, and his world is very little.
It also says a lot about him that he's a Dad who didn't fight for his sons. I knew a guy like that. He was dishonorable in that way, and I think he, like Brad, just accept where society has put them, accept what they're given, but don't fight for more. Joel fights for more, or wants to. He fought for Sam's friendship, and he wants to fight to have kids, bc he'd be a great Dad.
In stark contrast, Brad didn't even fight for his own kids. I would do anything for my kid. I adore him beyond words. When a parent abandons a child, kids don't know that it's bc of their weak father, and his shortcomings, they blame themselves and take it personally. They don't see their father as a deeply ashamed person (who I think Brad still very much is), they think it's their fault. And it says a lot about his character that he never righted that wrong. He isn't insightful and doesn't delve beneath the surface like Joel. He's all about bible study, but it's bc he was raised religious, not because it meets the needs of his soul. Remember Joel's church journey with Sam in season 1? Brad seems like the last guy to scope out the place that would click with his soul. He seems very disconnected with his soul, his body, his needs. He's very robotic in many ways, physically as well. The actor playing him is doing a great job of a withholding person who is unaware of so much.
Brad is domineering. He's used to having things going his way. He's not good at adjusting and he's barely trying to accommodate Joel, and that's being generous to Brad. Joel is ignoring all of his instincts. I'm surprised he's not having his rash like he did in season 1. This would be the perfect situation to trigger that. Brad is not gonna budge and Joel is going to be erased more and more if he stays with Brad.
Joel hasn't even told Brad about that nasty "sushi" he makes. Joel is scared of Brad.
I hope Sam didn't donate anything that Joel threw away, trying to sublimate himself, and frankly Brad fits in perfectly with those clueless bible study bros, he's still so heterosexual in his lifestyle, very rigid, and he does not fit in at all with the friend group, just like Susan doesn't.
Brad resembles that high school bully that scared Joel way more than anyone else in the friend group (Susan doesn't count). Brad is so rigid and unquestioning in his thinking, his feelings come out sideways, like with his road rage even though it makes Joel CLEARLY scared and uncomfortable,
Joel is betraying himself and his soul by being with Brad, who he is scared of. It broke my heart and made perfect sense when he broke down. He's with a man who disapproves of him, of his friends, of his sense of humor (the hilarious artwork that Sam made, and that adorable photo!). I'm surprised Joel isn't having his rash like in season 1. He's living with a disapproving and punitive father figure who is unpredictable and who Joel is scared of. Like did you see Joel monitoring Brad's reaction to Susan's questions, like he was trying to manage him from afar? Joel is working so hard and Brad isn't doing much for Joel at all. Joel isn't at home in his sterile living space at all.
It's so sad. I hope Joel leaves Brad and go back to those who really accept him and embrace him and make space for him...and Brad does not do much of that, aside from the song, that was touching. Joel is a mischievous and fun person who has a lot of love to give and is going to be a great Dad. Sam is his person. Not romantically, but they are soul mates. I hope Joel gets his kids and a fella that's much better for him. It broke my heart when he finally began to realize what he'd been denying himself, and how he's been doing himself such a huge disservice by making himself small and what Brad wants bc he's afraid to never have romantic love again. I think Fred is doing the same with Susan (loneliness can make people do sad and desperate things, and that's what I think Fred and Joel are doing by being with the people they are with). They both deserve better.
