2024.11.25 15:30 podba Hi guys. "Ziobot" here - sharing my perspective.

TL;DR: Israeli reservist offering to answer your questions and expressing hope for a better future for us both.
I'm what you call here a "Ziobot", tried a throwaway account a month ago but it didn't let me post, so I figured I'd post the real one as we're (hopefully) nearing a ceasefire. I normally just read here without commenting, because it isn't my space. However, as I finished 3 weeks of reserves on the Lebanese border (and somewhat inside), I wanted to write and give you a first hand retelling, as well as a chance to engage, and ask questions.
I just know I would very much appreciate a Southern Lebanese border resident reaching out, so I can better understand their side of the story, so here I am offering mine. Mods, if this is too much for this sub, please delete.
I understand this will be unwelcome to many, and many of you will not like me. That's fine. Feel free to swear, I won't get offended, and realise Lebanese are hurting. I wish there was a solution to this that involved zero violence, but I don't believe there is one.
Let's start with the basics:
I'm Israeli. In my 30s, volunteered back to reserve duty after October 7 and have been deployed to Gaza, the Lebanese border, Gaza again, and Lebanon again.
In my normal life I work with a humanitarian NGOs. Spent a lot of time in sub-Saharan Africa and have many Lebanese friends of numerous confessions (Shia, Druze, Maronite). Admittedly a few less after this past year (they blocked me, I didn't). I don't hate Lebanon, I loved almost every Lebanese person I interacted with (minus Hezbollah who shot at me). Of all the Middle Eastern countries I can't visit as an Israeli, Lebanon is the only one that hurts. I feel I'd love it, and I feel like many Lebanese would love Israel, for its mixture of old and new, East and West. Alas, this seems far in the future, but I hope it will be possible one day.
To my first hand experience: I've served on the Lebanese border last winter. At that point, 100,000 Israelis left their homes in Northern Israel. Our goal was to ensure an October 7 like scenario doesn't repeat itself from Hezbollah. Basically everything that moved on the border was immediately hit by Anti Tank missiles by Hezbollah. Farmers, the few civilians gathering things, some soldiers. The entire front row of houses of the Israeli side was burnt. Every day more and more houses were destroyed. Similar reality on the Lebanese side, except we were only allowed to fire as a response, never randomly. Hezbollah was using peoples homes (some of them very very nice homes, I must say) as observation points, Anti tank missile launchpads, and rocket launches. As early as January very few civilians remained in the frontline villages, and almost all the movements observed were of young, military aged men. The destruction in Southern Lebanon is huge. Because they moved between houses to fire at us, and every rocket got a response.
Fast forward to two months ago, when I was called up.
I was part of a division that went into Lebanon, I won't detail exact villages, but you could guess from the context. One of the small villages on the border, was basically a Hezbollah bunker in its entirety. More than 20 houses had tunnel entrances in them. The mosque and hasaniya did as well. Cute civilian homes from the outside, then in the bedroom, a tunnel entrance. I'm talking full on, 50m tunnel, with beds, and an unbelievable amount of weapons. Mortars, guns, RPGs, lots of anti tank missiles. Some Iranian, some Russian, some Chinese. A lot was brand new. Tons of food etc. It seems like they were preparing for a full scale invasion. A lot of mosques where the minaret has a Hezbollah observation post, military grade thermal cameras and all. A school that we had an anti tank missile shot at us from, and had a tunnel entrance. A hospital where we found an observation point. Thankfully both were evacuated by the time we got there. It's disheartening, because I have the utmost respect for religious sites. I don't want to see anyone's history or culture destroyed. You don't need to believe me, but nobody wanted wanton destruction. They really used almost every house.
There were some skirmishes but not a lot. Either a lot of the fighters fled, or the beepers got them. Either way we didn't encounter nearly the level of resistance we thought we would. We finished collecting the weapons (numerous truckloads worth), blew up the tunnels (sadly many of them took most of the houses on top with them), and left. I'm not sorry. While I understand the pain of the citizens of those villages, I don't see how else we can ensure the safety of our citizens up North - Jews, Arabs, and Druze. My unit finished our service, and we returned to civilian lives. I know other units conducted similar raids on nearby villages. Heard a lot of the same reports (tunnels everywhere, use of civilian homes), but TBH not on the scale of what we found.
I'm happy to engage in respectful dialogue, and answer what I can. Please know I bear no ill will towards Lebanon, Lebanese, Shias, or any other group. I mostly want to be left alone in my own country, same as you guys. I hope you're all safe, and I hope the upcoming ceasefire will bring peace to both our countries, without Hezbollah, and in time, with real actual peace.

2024.11.25 15:29 Simple_Bison9128 How to decide the AlCl3 dosing rate for P removal?

Hi all,
I am a Process Improvement Engineer and because of the new limits of the P (from 7 to 2 mg/l), we have started dosing AlCl3 before Aeration Tank. It is working for us to get into limits but we are dosing at a constant rate of 600 ml/hour for P values of 6-7 mg/l and the resulting P values are lower than 0.5 mg/l after aeration tank. Now to optimise and automate the AlCl3 dosing, I need to work on a logic which I am not sure of. What should I take as a Biology P removal efficiency? How should I manipulate the AlCl3 flow rate based on different P values which ranges from 2 mg/l to 15 mg/l. Note: I have a residence time of 5-5.5 days in Aeration tank. So, I need a feed-forward control loop to proactively dose AlCl3.
Thanks :)

2024.11.25 15:29 MysticWolf1994 3 year anniversary

3 years ago, I made a decision that ultimately changed my entire life.
I had told my mom I needed time and space to work through my trauma so that I didn't take out my pain and frustration out on my family while processing what what was bothering me.
In typical (my) mom fashion she wouldn't let go of the situation and pushed me until I told her everything. And I did but what should have been a time where my mom chose me lead to the ultimate betrayal.
I pushed myself to continue a relationship with my parents for the following months but laid down boundaries that I would need strictly adhered to in order to attempt to repair the damage.
Ultimately they didn't follow through with any of it and I walked away for good. So this time of year is always somewhat bittersweet for me. I don't regret speaking my truth or for pursuing a path of healing from my trauma. However, I miss having a family, parents who loved me. I grieve all the things that could and should have been.
But I've never been more thankful for the strength I have found within myself to establish boundaries and to keep moving even when living seemed impossible. I'm thankful for my husband and his patience when I know this journey has undoubtedly tested him at times. I'm thankful for his love and support as I tore down everything I knew and rebuilt it into a safe haven for myself and him. As we've built and continue to build traditions that fit our family.
I don't really know the purpose for writing this other than it's an anniversary I'll never forget.

2024.11.25 15:29 demetris Plugin Exodus: Request/Proposal for plugin that alerts you if you have plugins that left wordpress.org

I think a plugin like this does not exist and I also think it would help.
In this piece I describe why I think it would help and how I think it could work.
WHY? In my view, plugin authors looking to leave wordpress[dot]org have to solve two problems first:
(1)
Set up infrastructure (a) for people to download their plugins and, once the plugins are installed, (b) for the plugins to be updated from the new location. This is a technical problem and it is easy to solve.
(2)
Let their users know that the plugin has left dotorg (and cannot be updated anymore via dotorg).
This is also a technical problem, but it is not just technical, and may not be easy to solve in a satisfactory manner for all plugin authors.
The plugin I am thinking about is meant to help towards solving the second problem. (It is not a complete solution though.)
THE PLUGIN FUNCTIONALITY The plugin, let’s call it Plugin Exodus, would do two things in its most basic form:
(1)
Alert you if a plugin you use has left dotorg, provide a link to download the plugin from its new location, and, optionally, also provide a link to instructions on how to move from the old to the new.
The plugin would know all that by looking at a built-in database. The database would be updated as needed with information that plugin authors submit. (Author submissions would be the only way to add information to the database. The plugin should not take it upon itself to add such information to the database for any plugins.)
Importantly, the plugin would also have to know that those submitting information for a plugin are the authors/owners of the plugin. In other words, it should provide a way to verify ownership of plugins submitted.
Even more importantly, the authors of the Plugin Exodus plugin should be trusted to not add information to the plugin database on their own initiative. If they were allowed to do that, they could, e.g., add hello-dolly to the database and direct users of Hello Dolly to download a Hello Dolly plugin that is not the genuine Hello Dolly.
I have no idea how this last problem of trust can be solved.
(2)
Include a mechanism that (a) prevents updates from dotorg for plugins that it knows have left dotorg, and (b) prevents updates from dotorg for itself.
PLUGIN PROPAGATION (essential for a plugin of this purpose) If plugin authors, especially plugin authors that are looking to leave dotorg, like the idea of the Plugin Exodus plugin, they could start recommending it to their users through any channels available to them. When users install the plugin, they would receive alerts for plugins by the author who recommended Plugin Exodus, and, importantly, they would also receive alerts for any other plugins the plugin knows about.
The install base would grow faster if some providers of managed hosting liked the idea and added the plugin to their setups as an mu-plugin.
PLUGIN HOMEPAGE The plugin homepage, in its most basic form, would have (a) a link to download the plugin and (b)information about what the plugin is.
Optionally, it could also have easy to add features such as:

WHO WOULD BUILD THIS PLUGIN? That’s easy. There are many good plugin developers thinking about leaving dotorg. Building a plugin like this would be simple for any of them.
WHO WOULD BUILD THE SITE FOR THE PLUGIN? That’s easy. I can do that.
WHAT ABOUT THE DOMAIN? That’s easy. I bought pluginexodus.org and pluginexodus.com the other day while thinking about the problem. But that’s just a suggestion (which I don’t like very much because it is too dramatic for my taste). Any sufficiently descriptive domain name would be fine.
WHAT DO YOU THINK? Do you think this is a good idea?
Do you see any inherent flaws in the concept?
Do you have suggestions for improvements?
Are you maybe already working on something like this? :-)
