2024.11.25 16:30 KingSi How can I (should I?) upgrade my current set up?
My current setup is a Delonghi Dedica, which I've had for about 5 years now, and I enjoy using it and steaming milk for something I'm calling a flat white, but probably isn't! I changed the portafilter basket a couple years in (sorry I'm still not confident on all the terms!)
But it's only within the last year or so I've started giving my coffee making at home some proper attention. I started buying whole beans from a local roaster, which lead to me getting a Hario hand grinder and more recently a WDT tool. I'm lacking a decent set of scales though.
I'm really enjoying the process; there's something therapeutic about it. But even though I'm only grinding for myself, doing it by hand is a pain! And so that's one of the main reasons I'm looking to upgrade what I have.
As much as I'd like to think I'm becoming James Hoffman, if I'm honest I'm probably not that involved and probably won't get to that stage. I just want to make what I enjoy, not go winning competitions! So although I understand the benefits of a machine like a Gaggia Classic, in terms of longevity etc., I'm not confident I'm technically minded, or proactive enough to make full use of the capabilities of that sort of machine.
So at the moment my mind is currently hovering around the Sage (Breville) Barista Express Impress. It seems to have enough automation to make making a nice coffee on a busy weekday morning easy. But also has the opportunity to play around with it, and dial it in more, at the weekends.
But is it worth the extra money over the Barista Express? Would that be just as easy to use, with a decent set of scales, whilst trying to monitor a 3yo? Are there any similar alternatives, with an in-built grinder*, out there I'm missing out on?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions - Looking to spend under £800, obviously lowebetter cost effectiveness is better!
* I've considered the a separate machine (Bambino Plus?) and grinder (?), but I'm yet to convince myself that's a better option, unless someone has a good argument for it? Price? (Plus where I've only one plug socket to use unless I rearrange the kitchen!)

And many other posts like it over the years, I thought it would be a good time to dig out some old photos I have of Hell House. I grew up in the area, and like many of you who shared that locational experience, I had quite the fascination with Hell House. When I was in High School, friends and I would make weekend trips out to the building and venture as close as we could. I once was touching the outside of the building when a groundskeeper scared me off. I had friends who claimed they roamed the halls. Another buddy of mine was attacked by guard dogs, sued, and won the case against the grounds keeper.
Over the years, as many others made the trips like my friends and I did, the building was slowly vandalized, and eventually a fire destroyed the building in 1997 and it was torn down. Somewhere in those intervening years, I had the wild idea of buying the property and turning it into a nightclub. It already had a great reputation, and I was sure it would be a success. As part of that idea, I researched the property and its history, including a trip to the Howard County Historical Society. While there, I took photocopies of all the pictures I could find of what you know as Hell House, but was actually Saint Mary’s College at Ilchester). The pictures, if I recall correctly, came from a yearbook the historical society had on hand.
An important note from the Wikipedia page is this:
“In 1982 Micheal Nibali, a developer, purchased a 33 acres (0.13 km2) portion of the site for $250,000 including the college building, with the intent of converting the building into 96 apartments. Nibali had won a controversial bid from executive J. Hugh Nichols to convert the recently burned Ellicott City Elementary school to apartments.[7][8] After approval failed, the building was abandoned and allowed to be vandalized.“This would mostly indicate that the building and property were still in condition at the time me, and every other teenager in the area, would have been making treks to Hell House.
Interesting note, the famous alter was the original cemetery on the grounds, which was moved at some point, and the cemetery (and those that made it their permanent home) can now be found here:

When I was going there in my youth, the cemetery and altar were still in really good condition (I thought I had photos of it buried in some boxes somewhere including the angel statue that used to sit in the middle of the altar, but I can’t seem to find them). 2024.11.25 16:30 RogueLieutenant Tips on moving and elevating a table
Hello,
We recently purchased our first house, and the sellers wanted to leave the pool table in the unfinished basement. We were like cool bonus pool table.
The two issues we're running into is this:
We need the table moved about 10 feet into a different part of the basement where it'll stay once we finish it.
We also want to use the table for board games (sorry if that's hard to hear in this sub!) so we plan on getting a table covetopper to protect the felt.
The thing with this, is the table sides are just low enough to brush/scrape the top of your thighs when you sit next to it. Meaning we'd like to raise it up by a few inches for comfort.
The top is a single piece of slate and we're discovering that prospect of moving it just across the room is quite the feat.
Any tips on what to use to raise it up? and also tips on how to just move it across the room?

I'm having a hard time finding a simple app where I can track the daily deviation of multiple mechanical watches. Most of what I've found via Google search seems to no longer be available for some reason. The one that keeps popping up wants payment to add more than one watch. I'll just do it on paper versus paying for such a simple thing, but I think an app could be fun for long term comparisons.
Any suggestions?

Ok so tomorrow is my birthday (22yrs), and i have always struggled with birthdays my entire life. They have never been great and every year i end up crying and having a meltdown.
I think it comes down to the idea that i don't enjoy 'normal' birthday things like parties, so i always end up alone or with my parents for the day. Apart from presents, it never really feels 'special'. It feels like expectations never match reality and it always ends up upsetting me.
Tomorrow all i am doing is going out for lunch with my parents. That is it.
How do you guys celebrate? Does anyone else feel the same about birthdays? Any ideas what I can do to make it feel nicer?
