2024.11.25 17:58 bellystraw A Story Idea Or Two
I've done this once or twice where I've written down some ideas on stories I think would be cool, usually I just nurse these ideas in my brain for a while before forgetting them but it's nice to write them out to fully grasp how cool they are or if they're just meh. I've got two ideas today:
The Blind Saint Is Destined For Death
A blind swimmer (I'm thinking paralympic level) is reincarnated into an audio book she was listening to before death. She's reincarnated as Ashelotte Endrin, the blind saint of the Ymir empire whose death sets the foundation of the entire story. In the book Ashelotte's story implies that she was kidnapped by pirates and held for ransom, dying at the hands of the scoundrels who were then hunted down by the knight of the church the truth however was more complex.
Ashelotte Coal thought was being transported in secret out of the empire to an allied nation for fear of an impending invasion from a rival nation. She was popular among the people, but sheltered, only knowing was her associates at the temple told her. The temple was planning her death, with the death of a saintess being prime kindling for starting a holy war.
The pirates who kidnapped her were hired by the church, who promised them absolution and a clean slate held on to their saintess and protected her to their last but how can a single ship stand against the naval might of the great temple? It's now up to the reincarnated Ashelotte to work with the pirates to deliver her to safety, obtain their absolution hopefully survive the temple who will hunt them down with no mercy.
Notes: "I really enjoyed this idea, I think the FML being blind yet a great swimmer could create moments of tension, pirates are dope, the chaos of naval warfare being experienced through the lense of someone who can't see would the tense as well. Also a pirate ML and a mandatory parrot. There are also so many insane sea creatures that could be used for naval combat and thriller stuff. All in all, I dig it.
A Deal With The Degenerate
Mirabel Kristoff had it all. A duchess, a socialite, trendsetter, an unparalleled beauty and yet her life ended in such a pathetic manner. Her husband was cold to her, even on good days and even had other women strutting about, acting like they had Mirabel's title just because her husband's lust settled on their common hides. Yet one girl was different, instead of knight escorting a girl in and out of Duke Kristoff's bedroom like brothel workers on a field trip, the duke himself anxiously waited on her every move. That beast was in love.
Mirabel paid it no mind, it was not as if their marriage had ever had any inkling of love and faithfully attended to her duties as per usual. Then one day the girl became pregnant. Suddenly her funds got cut, experienced maids that had been working for her got moved to the girl, social events usually handled by her got moved to the girl, the girl started living in the duke's bedroom. It was as if she was quietly being replaced, with the duke hoping she'd be none the wiser.
Then came a meeting, her first meeting with the duke in months, was he finally going to apologize? Was he going to admit to the floozy's prolonged stay being little more than a stint of boredom? "We're getting divorced.", he coldly stated, like a casual chat between coworkers. Guess he did not know that both man and wife need to agree to such proceedings. She obviously rejected the fool notion and walked fuming out of his office. That was a mistake.
All of a sudden the floozy got poisoned. At least, it was an attempted poisoning and a phial of the stuff was found in Mirabel's room. Duke Kristoff seemingly spared no expense, hired a team of lawyers hellbent of sentencing Mirabel to hell for threatening the future heir of the Kristoff dukedom....not to mention the future duchess. Mirabel was locked in Gravewall keep, an institution famed for their poor treatment of inmated, usually reserved for regicides or rebels. There she wasted away, for months until she died. Swearing to take vengeance upon the duke for killing her over paltry matters such as love.
Then she wakes up, younger, vibrant. It seems she's in her old home, before she took the mantle of duchess Kristoff. She can barely get used to her younger form before a maid runs in screaming: "You've got a letter from Dave Casterville!?". She didn't remember any Dave Casterville, nor did she remember getting letters personally delivered to her room from men at her current age.
The envelope was gaudy. Pointlessly ornate, purple envelope with golden ribbons and on the family crest on the seal was a peacock. She would definitely have remembered such a horrid thing. The letter inside was the real kicker. The text was simple, yet dreadfully ominous: "Dearest Mirabel Dane, I hope this letter finds you well. I recently became aware of the importance of second chances and felt the need to speak with someone who might relate". Her face whitened and she immediately threw the letter in the fireplace. Someone knows.
After using her well trained socialite skills to ask about Dave Casterville she came to realize the man was a dreadful hedonist and a man so crude that even god himself would likely strike him down would he ever walk into a temple. He wasn't a noble but he was rich, so rich in fact that he matched dukedoms in wealth and the way he obtained such wealth? Flesh.
He had a vast network of brothels of unnatural quality all across the empire. Bars and theatre followed but were not his focus. Casterville made vast amounts of business relations to his wealthier clients and had become a near household name of intrigue in social circles both noble and not. She had also learned that he was a heavy drinker, heavier smoker, colluded with savages and indulged heavily in sexual proclivities with both women and men. The very thought was nauseating to her, being so open about things best held behind closed doors.
She had learned tons about him but still the question stood, how did he know about her second chance? More gaudy envelopes followed the first she had received and really did not want anything to do with them but one day her curiosity overtook her and she sent a reply: "Letters do can do little to convey the what I have to say about second chances, perhaps we'd do well to speak in person". Mirabel was filled with regret the second she saw the post carrier ride away with her letter but there was little she could do. The reply came to her sooner than expected, including only an address and the words "see you soon" and some hieroglyphics she could not understand ( ;) ).
Casterville seemingly gave her the address to his abode, a ridiculous mansion, painted pink in the middle of red light district he himself had built. In the front garden of his mansion where peacocks roaming free and flowers spread about in a way that made Mirabel certain they were placed only to confuse passerby's. When the knight who was escorting her knocked on the door a tall man, with ebon skin and amber eyes answered. He stood nearly a head taller than her knight who nervously held on to the hilt of his sheathed sword. Was this the one of the savages Mirabel had heard about? Though his looks were unlike anything she's seen in her combined lives she was certain there was nothing savage about him. Well groomed, good posture and a quiet dignity surrounded the man.
"I am Saladin, the butler of the Casterville estate. Master Casterville has been expecting you", said the giant. He directed us towards the stairs and then we noticed the maids. All of them were beautiful, young women. Mirabel's only cause for concern was the maids' uniforms. Their skirts only reached to their knees and their cleavages were there for all to see. She knew she was dealing with an infamous degenerate but she did not know he was so willing to lay his proclivities bare for all to see.
The butler named Saladin lead Mirabel and her knight through the vast mansion, decorated with invaluable art pieces and furniture until they reached a closed room, Dave Casterville's office. "I've brought lady Mirabel Dane, sir", said Saladin as he knocked on the door. There was a slight pause and then the man behind the door replied "let them in" and there did Mirabel lay her eyes on David Casterville for the first time....and his friend.
Casterville was a average sized man but he certainly stood out in spite of that. His long, bright, orange hair was slicked back and he had a well trimmed beard with an outlandish mustache with waxed tips which made him look like either a magician or a charlatan. He wore a gaudy, purple shirt and vest accompanied by a midnight blue shirt. All his buttons were gold and the stench of tobacco filled the room. Yet the first thing Mirabel noticed right away were his eyes. The were a piercing, dull green and it was as his very stare saw right through her.....then there was the maid.
In Casterville's lap was one of his outlandish maids, trimming his mustache. Not only was she dressed like the other maids, she had this ridiculously exaggerated accent and she seemingly did not care the slightest bit about the presence of the noblewoman standing right in front of her. "oui monsiur, we're almost done wiz ze trimmings of your mustache no?", she said while Casterville lazily grabbed a small mirror, nodded approvingly with the trim of his conman mustache and gestured to the maid that she was done. "Where would I be without you Lira?".
The maid, apparently named Lira, smiled to herself and walked to the door, suddenly stopping gestured to a wine cork in front of Casterville's desk and said with the outlandish accent "oh non! I cannot believe I mizzed zis!" and bent over to grab the cork, Casterville ravenously basking in the apparent glory of his maids behind. The maid then skedaddled, did a small bow to the lady and left.
After this small display, which only took a few seconds but to Mirabel felt like hours, the degenerate pointed her to the recliner in front of his desk. Mirabel had only one statement before sitting: "I find it ill suiting for a man of your means to order your maids to partake in such ill mannered activities!".
Casterville simply laughed and gestured to the recliner again: "Order? I pay her a fortune for these sessions!" Mirabel stared at the man, shocked at his indecency while he simply snickered over the puzzled look on her face. "But enough about me", he said. "We're here to talk about second chances, are we not?" Mirabel's face turned serious while Casterville still had a devious smirk on his face, partly hidden by his stupid mustache. "You see, I read this story once", Casterville continued. "It was decent at best really, it was a tale about a duchess and a duke who didn't love her". Mirabel's furrowed her eyebrows, how much did he know? "The duchess, ever the dutiful wife, played her part in the marriage while the duke played around with other women, until one day he fell in love you see".
Mirabel felt like she was suffocating, how could he know of events that never happened in this lifetime? Her obvious discomfort did not deter Casterville who seemed like the type who enjoyed the sound of his own voice. "The duke wanted to get rid of his duchess you see. He had found a girl whom he wanted to spent the rest of his life with but his wife stood in the way of making her the true duchess, his true partner!". Mirabel wondered if she should run, if she was in danger, who the hell was this guy?!
Casterville took a glance at Mirabel's shocked exterior, made a light smirk and started filling a tobacco pipe, shaped like a fairy, carrying a flower. "Well, where was I? Oh yeah, the duke fell in love yada yada yada and the duchess got locked away in a tower where she starved to death while the couple lived happily ever after...that about sums it up doesn't it. Duchess Kristoff?".
Mirabel quickly stood from her seat, nearly toppling the recliner she stood on. "HOW THE HELL DO YOU KNOW ALL THIS, WHO ARE YOU?!" She screamed at the top of her lungs. Casterville paid her outburst no mind, like he had expected a noble lady of the empire to fly into a rage and simply lit his pipe, the smell of tobacco wafting through the room. "You know what I find strange about this story lady Dane?" Said Casterville, breathing out a cloud of smoke, "The duchess's actions in the sequel make so little sense".
Mirabel was taken aback, sequel? What the hell is he on about? Casterville paid her no mind, and simply kept monologuing: "See, in the book I read the duchess miraculously turns back time. She gains a new lease on life and what does she do, She tries to avoid her former husband the duke but then for some ungodly reason falls in love with him again and even more strangely in my opinion he starts loving her".
Mirabel stared at him. "Me, loving duke Kristoff after all he did to me, is he insane?". Casterville's green eyes met hers for a moment, nodded and said "I know, it's a terrible ending". He took a deep puff of his pipe, breathed out another cloud of smoke, leaned on the table, his eyes meeting Mirabel's and simply stated: "How about we figure out a new way to end this story huh?"
Notes: FUCK that was longer than I expected, I just started writing. Never been good with writing dialogue so I apologize if it's an illegible mess. I've had the idea of Casterville and Mirabel in my mind for a while. Basically Casterville's from another world (we know but Mirabel doesn't), has read the story but appeared in the world years ago in Mirabel's second life. My thoughts at the moment are that Casterville "sponsors" Mirabel just so he can gain access to high society, since even though he's wealthy he's still a commoner. What are his plans? I dunno, not yet at least.
If anyone actually read all of this, then that's dope. Otherwise have a grand old day

2024.11.25 17:58 Sudden-League9371 Massive Anxiety and seeking advice
Hello, I am in the process of applying to a bunch of PhD programs in either Physics or Electrical Engineering. I cant help but feel anxious about the entire process, I've seeked advice and proofreading from some peers and AI and everything seems to contradict each other or they say different things. I applied last year and didn't get into any graduate school, but this year I've expanded my school list and worked substantially more on my essays. Despite this, I can't help feel overwhelming anxiety as the deadlines come up. Is there any advice as to what I should be doing at this stage? I was gonna reach out to graduate students in the labs that I was interested in joining, but is it too late now?
