Hi,
Just looking to get some advice on what my mother-in-law may be entitled to and checking I've understood the information correctly.
My MIL is self-employed as home help/cleaner. She will reach state pension age on 25/3/25. Her and her husband have savings over £6k so not entitled to any means tested benefits.
For the last 2 years, she opted out of paying Class 2 NI contributions as she was below the threshold and already had the number of qualifying years needed for her full state pension.
On 16/11/24, she badly fractured her knee and is not expected to be able to do her job by the time she retires. (She is planning on claiming her pension on 25/3/25).
Would she be eligible for new style ESA, if she paid her contributions from the previous years? Would it be worth it?
I'm getting slightly confused with which contributions can be paid voluntarily and how much this would cost her.

Hi all,
We purchased a home in the PNW this last spring that was built in the 90s. We have planned on doing a whole house renovation, some areas down to the studs. Looking over the original architectural plans, a basement was planned. The plan ended up getting scrapped as there was no egress. At some point an egress was actually put in, and our existing crawlspace is nearly 6' from ground to joists. We have started thinking it would be pretty cool to dig out some more and make a functional basement. Existing crawlspace is roughly 2200 sq. ft. I know costs vary widely, but I'm curious about feasibility of something like this, potential costs associated and potential problems with doing so. To reiterate, I am not talking about cost to finish, just to get it from where it is now with just a vapor barrier, to having ~ 8 foot ceilings and an unfinished basement. Thanks in advance!

"The tradition of Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche and other masters of his caliber is to focus on the simple approach of a meditator, an approach that is saturated with direct, pithy instructions. This is a tradition of plainly and simply stating things as they are, while allowing the student to gain personal experience by alternating questions with advice.
Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche teaches in a style called 'instruction through personal experience'. He has spent many years in retreat, practicing in the sense of assimilating the teachings within his experience. Consequently, he speaks from experience, expressing what he himself has undergone. Such teachings are unique, and at times his way of phrasing instructions is amazing. Sometimes they are not particularly eloquent, but always his words have a strongly beneficial impact on the listener's mind. I find that just half an hour of Rinpoche's teachings is more beneficial than reading through volumes of books. That is the effect of instruction through personal experience.
To teach that the enlightened essence is present within the mind of any sentient being; to teach how this essence is, directly, so it can be recognized within the listener's experience; to show the need for recognizing it and the tremendous benefit of doing so; to show clearly how at that moment the buddha, the awakened state, needs not to be sought for elsewhere but is present within yourself; and that you become enlightened through experiencing what was always present within you - that is what Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche teaches."

I (31M) am the sole earner in my immediate family. I am currently work as a software engineer for a major MNC. Because of my job, I have a comfortable amount of disposable income and have been financially supporting my family since my father’s retirement.
I’ve often clashed with my father and sister over economic and social issues. My sister, who has failed in her business ventures, and my father, who has been an unsuccessful investor outside his career, have made decisions I’ve struggled to agree with. For instance, despite my strong academic record, my father prioritized funding my sister’s unsuccessful liberal arts education and business endeavors, while I was sent to a public school with minimal tuition. Both my father and sister also rely heavily on government schemes funded by taxpayers like me, which I don’t feel they are entitled to. My cousin J (32M), from my father’s side, shares similar political leanings. He is even left to them in that he actively supports Kashmiri Muslims and groups like Hamas and Hezbollah. Like my sister, he’s a failed businessman and is barely surviving at the moment by selling used cars. With a new baby, his financial struggles have worsened, and I’ve been helping him out monetarily. However, J frequently disagrees with my views, often arguing and raising his voice during discussions.
My mother is someone who aligns with my perspectives. She’s often been bullied by my father and sister for her opinions when I’m not around. I’m always willing to support her financially, whether for household needs or religious purposes. Additionally, I have cousins R (36M) and S (38M) who share my political view on these matters, both of whom are successful engineers.
We recently had a family get-together for the festival Diwali(We are Indian Americans). During this gathering, J began criticizing Trump and praising Harris, which escalated into a heated argument. He called me a traitor for not supporting Harris as she is Indian like us. I reminded him that she neither identifies as Indian, nor she follows her Hindu religion. She strictly identifies as a Black Christian woman. This resulted in further tense discussions and some screaming and name-calling. Finally, I reminded him that I was financially supporting him and called him an ungrateful leech. The argument intensified, with my father and sister siding with J, while R and S supported me. Frustrated, I declared that I no longer wished to maintain a relationship with J and have cut him off forever. My father, and sister protested, who are also cut off subsequently.
Later, my mother expressed concern about my harsh stance. I assured her it was my decision and that I’d reconsider if they acknowledged their mistakes and changed their views. She accepted this, and we are on good terms for now. I wanted to ask if I am the asshole for cutting off family members who support Harris? I feel I could be the asshole as it could leave my nephew destitute and my sister struggling during this recession.
