My mom remarried in 2009 to what seemed to be the most wholesome and kind man. My sisters and I, already adults at this point, were happy that she found someone seemingly far opposite of our father and the toxic marriage she endured. About 5 years into their marriage, my mom and stepdad befriended a woman (let’s call her Kate) who was a single mom to two young daughters (8 and 10 years old at the time). They became very close over the years, and my mom and stepdad mentioned how the young girls were like daughters to them. The girls also viewed my stepdad as a father figure, and felt cared for and protected by him as they didn’t have a decent father of their own. Their biological father was in prison, so needless to say, they had a toxic upbringing and were looking for love and stability. Over the years my mom and stepdad helped Kate and girls with expenses and necessities as needed. In 2019, they needed a temporary place to stay, and my mom/stepdad invited them to live in their home until Kate could afford to move out. The two daughters were 17 and 19 at this point. My 18F cousin, who needed a place to stay while in school, was also was living there at the same time as Kate and her daughters. One evening while getting ready to shower, the 19 year old noticed a red light in the ceiling vent, which turned out to be a camera after closer inspection. My stepdad must have been watching the feed on his phone or computer because he immediately ran up the stairs and started pounding on the bathroom door. This poor girl was scared, crying, and locked herself in the bathroom to stay safe (she was home alone with my stepdad). She called her mother who immediately called the police. He was arrested that night but eventually only had probation and the incident removed from his record. Footage was only recovered for the 19F, so he could not be charged for the 17F and 18F (they all shared a bathroom). After the incident, my mother was immediately ready to divorce and leave him. Unfortunately, and for reasons I can’t understand, she fabricated excuses for his actions and truly believes a combination of medications led to him planting cameras. While he had not done anything to this extreme in the past to our knowledge, he did install spyware on my mom’s devices so he could read messages/interactions, so the behavior of spying isn’t new. This was just over 5 years ago, and my mom is still married to this man. My husband and I refuse to have anything to do with him. We have not been to my mother’s house, family events, or holidays in this time. It’s especially hard on me knowing that we are essentially the only ones not going and I feel like I am missing out on my family. My sisters have attended some events over the years, but they have not forgiven my stepdad and do not excuse his behavior in any way. Somehow the family even convinced my cousin that she was overacting, despite having PTSD and not able to shower with lights on for a year or so following this event, so she is now attending family functions again with my stepdad. In general, this family is filled with toxic behaviors and continue to excuse them. This is sadly not the first time a similar situation has happened. My sisters and I have tried everything to communicate how toxic the situation is, and how family members have no right to tell someone to ‘just get over’ a very traumatizing event because ‘life is too short’. I feel frustrated that my mom isn’t seeing the situation clearly and just wants everyone to forgive and forget. This was sexual assault towards someone they considered a daughter. We’ve even asked our mother how she would feel if it was one of us who was recorded, and her response was, ‘that’s different’. It shouldn’t be different… Who knows how much he has gotten away with and for how long? He could have footage of my cousin as well, or even my sisters and I through the years depending on how long this behavior has taken place. He said it was a one-time thing, but I refuse to believe that. There have been many red flags with some little quirks that my sisters and I have noticed now that we look back and reflect on the situation. I guess I just need reassurance that I’m not acting unreasonable. Has anyone experienced a similar situation?

Hello everyone! So I’ve been an esthetician working for a franchise for 2 years, started working there straight out of school. When I was freshly employed they mentioned that if I didn’t have any bookings for a scheduled day I didn’t have to come in. I recently went to another franchise spa and they mentioned that if I’m not booked for a scheduled day, I am still required to be there. Im also not getting paid to be there when it’s a slow day. I would just have to hope that a last minute client books so my time will at least be a little worth it. My days are 6-8 hours, 4 days a week. I know I have to be patient but at the end of the day it sucks that I am expected to be at work even if I’m not booked without getting paid. I have already talked to the manager and the owner. They always say patience is key and thank me for coming in when I’m not booked. They say they can’t do anything about pay not unless I am booked, I just wanna know if this is legal?! I also suggested that a client could still be able to book me last minute even when Im not in the spa physically, but to please just let me know 30 mins before hand or an hour. I know that’s what they did at the last spa I worked for. It sounds like I am complaining but I care about my time and I don’t wanna be taken advantage of. Thanks in advance for any advice beauties!

2024.11.25 19:50 Winter-Technician947 I can’t believe where I am life and I’m scared. Any thoughts/advice appreciated ?
I have been a silent lurker in this group for a while.
I’ll try and condense this so that it isn’t long-winded but in short, I’ve come to a crossroads in my life. I always imagined that by 38 I would be successful and despite being ambitious, I’m trying to better myself. I always fail. I have now come to a stalemate And quite frankly my ambition has been lost. My motivation has been lost. I’m not suicidal. I’ve always lived by the mantra but I am a survivor and will survive but having failed in my marriage and having no children. I feel like I’m cursed.
I really don’t have anything impressive, on paper. My CV is littered with gaps and jumps simply because I’ve never been content. My ambition when I was younger to be a teacher and this never materialised for reasons that are too complicated to explain. I really don’t know what to do and how to move forward. I feel like I’m just destined to be a total failure and alone for the rest of my life and I don’t relish that prospect.
I’ve also just left a highly deflating job because I came into some money following the death of my gran. Nothing huge but enough to allow me some breathing space to reflect.
If anyone has any advice or constructive help for me, I would really appreciate it because at this point I’m just a car crash .

Hi everyone, I am writing a paper, and in one paragraph, I’m just trying to use a single example to show that in order to be adherent to state law, sometimes as school counselors we have to go against our professional ethics since laws trump ethics in legal disputes.
I wanted to ask any school counselors that work or have worked in Alabama if they had to follow a state law that contradicted professional ethics or standards as defined by ASCA.
When doing some preliminary research, I saw that in 2021, Alabama introduced a bill concerning gender-affirming healthcare and breaching of confidentiality if a student discloses to a school counselor that they are gender-questioning, identify as transgender or any other gender non-conforming identity that contradicts their assigned sex at birth. However, I couldn’t find anything that explicitly states whether that particular law was signed into effect.
Any help would be appreciated!
