tl;dr at the end of the post
Some context: Iām 26, worked for a year in investment banking, took a year āoffā working as a music teacher, went back to normal life working in SaaS sales, and then landed a pretty cool job: COO of a relatively small fashion brand. In short, I take care of b2b development, hr, some logistics topics, and a few other smaller things.
I took a pay cut from the sales job, but the seniority and freedom that came with it were totally worth the cut. Iām learning so much every day, but thereās a few buts:
ā¢the fashion industry sucks. small players hardly go by, theāre a revolution going on in how things are done and we donāt have nearly the budget to keep up with the big players.
ā¢the founders are fashion people before being entrepreneurs. Theyāre both co-CEOs AND creative directors. Iāve noticed that the mix of these two roles creates quite strong conflicts of interest. I think this hinders their āhungerā for success.
ā¢For the two reasons above, I donāt think this company is going anywhere crazy anytime soon. Since I joined a year ago, itās constantly been survival mode.
ā¢When I was in sales, I was learning mainly from my superiors, here I learn by myself, since thereās no one taking care of what I do. I feel like while this is very fun, Iām learning very slowly.
I found another (possible) job, I have the final case study / interview on Thursday, and Iām ponderating whether I should leave.
ā¢This job is at a lower level, āsenior partnership managerā = managing suppliers in the logistics industry.
ā¢I didnāt get an offer yet, but I expect the salary to be more or less twice as much as what I make now.
ā¢I believe this company is going places, and soon. They just raised tens of millions in series B and are already planning another round soon, despite being funded two years after my current company.
ā¢Iām a sales-oriented person, and Iām a little worried of growth opportunities if I get into partnerships management.
ā¢Iām worried it will look bad at nearly 27 to never have stayed in a job for longer than a year, and while I feel this is a great opportunity, maybe better ones will arise if I wait here a couple more years to build my knowledge credibility?
Do l prioritize the company or the role? the hours would roughly be the same, around 10 per day.
tl;dr: do I move after 1 year as COO for a small company, to a faster growing startup as partnership manager?
