Hello reddit.
I am a long-time casual league player, started playing in 2012 and have played on and off since. I got 4 of my friends to get into league at the time, but they have since all abandoned the game. On multiple occasions since then, I have tried to get other friends and some of my siblings into league, but it often fails miserably.
Recently I put on my game designer cap and started to think about how I would go about fixing this issue in my favorite game if I had the power to do anything I wanted. I figured I would post my ideas here to see if anyone had similar thoughts or to hear about how wrong I am.
The Problem
League of Legends is a complex game. When new players try to get into League, they have a mountain of information they need to climb before they can be confident in their abilities or even understand what is happening in the game as they play. From large list of champions that keep getting more complex, to a myriad of skill checks and game strategies and concepts, League takes time for most new players to learn. This doesn’t have to be a bad thing. A game having depth and complexity prevents it from being stale, but a major problem League faces is that most players give up and stop playing long before they can appreciate how fun and awesome League can really be.
From my experience trying to get people into League, one of the biggest problems they face is that new players just don’t feel like they are good enough to even learn the game. A new player’s games often start with them losing lane because they don’t yet have mechanics and then often chain feeding because they don’t know that they are behind or what they should do when they are behind. Often their teammates rage at them for not knowing what they are doing and before they even feel like they’ve had a chance to understand what’s happening or what they should do they are in an unwinnable situation against a 26/0 Katarina.
Many players only get this far before giving up. Others may try to “get good” and look up guides on how to play their champions or roles to try and get an edge and be able to have better games. This sometimes helps. However often this is not enough. They often face better players and smurfs who will completely obliterate their team and make their efforts feel meaningless. It is very easy in League for one player who is much worse than the lobby or one player who is much better than the lobby to make the game unfun and often borderline unplayable.
Goal
As I said in the beginning of my post, I am putting my game designer hat on and thinking about how I would attempt to tackle this problem. I believe the goal for League of Legends for their new players should be to have their players learn about how the game works, its mechanics and its strategies while making them feel engaged and most importantly making them have fun. We want to challenge them without overwhelming them, we want them to feel what the game can be like once they achieve further mastery of it.
There’s a lot of cool things about League and as game designers we should be putting the best of the best in front of our new players to get them excited to play more. We want them to feel what it’s like to get a solo kill because they outplayed their opponent, to win a crazy 1v2 even though they got ganked, to steal a game winning baron, to get a penta kill as Jinx in a teamfight they were losing, to 1 shot an enemy with a full combo from outside of vision, to cancel a Zac slingshot with a flay, to predict a flash, to win a base race, to do an Oriana wombo combo, to hit a 5 man malphite ult, to insec a carry into your team.
We want to give players the feeling that you get when you do something right, we want to create a clear path for them to improve at the game and we want to have them learn the game without having to suffer 30 minutes of sitting under their tower while their team rages at them.
Possible Improvements
1. Tutorials/Challenges/Missions
My first idea for how to improve the new player experience is to create a repository of tutorials, but because we are sneaky game designers, we are going to call them missions and they are going to have challenges or bonus objectives. Players need a way to learn the game on their own and new players are much less likely to be willing to use the practice tool or to even know what to do in the practice tool.
We are going to make some tutorials and put a trench coat on them and call them story missions so that players learn what they would in a tutorial without feeling like they are studying. Each mission will have a guided experience that will match something they would see in a real game of League. It will have some announcenarrator audio to set the scene and maybe provide a hint of lore to keep it interesting. It will trojan horse a lot of information that would be helpful to a new player while not being the most intuitive. Finally, completing the mission will provide let’s say 300 blue essence, with another 200 if you complete a bonus challenge.
Here’s an example of what once could be:
The Power of Teamwork
You will play ADC as Jinx with an Alistar (bot) support. You are facing a Caitlyn and Lux (also bots) in lane. yes we want to milk Arcane as much as we can, gotta get those new players interested. The game starts with the narrator giving a quick overview of what this lane might look like and what you should expect as Jinx. The narrator explains that in League Jinx is a scaling ADC and that she is especially good in large team fights, but needs time to scale and gather strength. Alistar is very good at engaging fights, but is especially weak at level 1 as he needs both his W and Q in order to engage effectively. Caitlyn and Lux on the other hand are strong level 1 as they have a lot of pushing power and range. We would probably want to add some lines of dialog for both Jinx and Caitlyn. Maybe Caitlyn would say something about catching Jinx once and for all and Jinx would say to herself that she needs time to prepare for her next move by building flame chompers.
The mission will go in stages. The first stage will start at level 1 from fountain and the narrator will guide the player through everything they would do in a normal game. They will buy their starting items, be directed to go to their bot bush and be ready to move if they see enemies invading level 1. Maybe there will be a quick explanation about how some junglers may ask for a leash, but that as an ADC you must make sure you do not miss any xp from the first wave, but we aren’t leashing for a bot jungler so this is informational only.
Once the wave arrives bot, the player is instructed to try to stay behind their minions for safety and to try to last hit as much as possible while trying to avoid the poke from Cait and Lux. They will get pushed under tower and hit level 2.
At this point, the 2nd stage of the mission will happen. The Alistar bot will ping that he is going in and the game will pause as the narrator explains what the Jinx player should do. The player should wait for the Alistar follow up on his support’s engage and make sure to place his Flame Chompers in the right place when the Alistar knocks up the Cait and Lux. The narrator will explain hit boxes and how even though the character is in the air from being knocked up, the chompers should go under the player’s feet where they just were. The game then resumes, the player needs to successfully combo with his Alistar and run down the lane to get a double kill on the bots. AND SCENE.
The bonus could be for getting a certain number of last hits or keeping your hp above a certain threshold.
This was a lot more writing than I realized it was going to be, so I won’t do any more detailed examples, but I think it’s enough to get the point across. We provided the player with a ton of information about champions, matchups, what their teammates might expect them to do at level 1 and how hitboxes work. Finally, we gave our player the experience of coordinating with his support and getting a double kill in lane.
While I recognize a lot of this information seems like it’s being presented in an absolute way, it is important for new players to have a place to start. I can 100% understand things like the Jinx should also be focusing on trimming the wave and trying to get level 2 quickly, and it is not good for the Jinx to be under tower against a Caitlyn and Lux, this is only an example of a scenario that could happen and things that a new player should be thinking about and concepts they should be learning. We want to keep each mission relatively straightforward while providing the player with a clear challenge and way of overcoming that challenge.
As game designers, we would want to make many of these missions so that players could get practice and exposure to a variety of strategies and mechanics. We would want to make a mission for level power spikes (probably just for level 2 and 6), for split pushing, dodging key abilities, baiting abilities, ganking, roaming, trading objectives, team fighting, judging character’s levels and item completions before fighting, warding, pinging, and many more. We want to provide a repository of knowledge that new players can access in-game to learn about things that people playing the game for years know almost intuitively by playing the game for long enough. At the same time, we will do our best to include a variety of champions and expose players to their main abilities and mechanics.
2. Clear champion information
I’m going to make this one quick as I have already written way too much. Each champion should have key words associated with them based on their strengths, weaknesses and playstyles so that new players can understand them at a glance. These key words should be viewable in champ select as well as on the load screen when players are getting into a game. A champion like Jax for example could have key words of scaling, split pusher, auto attack counter. Darius could have lane bully, ramping damage, reset on kills. Malzahar could be single target lockdown, fast pusher, immobile. The idea is for new players to be able to read these on the champion they are facing before going into the game so they can have an idea of what they are getting into if they have never played against the champion before or they don’t know how they should play against it.
3. Tab screen clarity
My final point and then I’ll stop typing I promise. Key information should be highlighted in the tab screen for it to be easily identified by new players. If a player completed an item since you last pressed tab, this item should have a bold yellow border so that it is highlighted and easy for the player to identify as important information. If a player is 3 levels ahead of everyone else in the game, their level should be highlighted. Simple things like this can go a long way in helping new players understand what is happening while they are playing.
