2024.11.25 23:19 Current_Conclusion_2 Happy ending - Trisomy 13 (T13) False Positive/CPM

Hi everyone - I just wanted to share my story here because this subreddit brought me as much comfort as anything could have during such a stressful waiting period - undoubtedly the hardest time of my life. I hope this helps some of you who are going through this now.
I am 32, and this is my first pregnancy.
12 weeks: My NIPT (taken at 10 weeks) came back at 12 weeks with a PPV of 11.8% for Trisomy 13. I was caught completely off guard. My OB essentially told me to prepare for the worst, and that a false positive is extremely unlikely. My MFM genetic counselor gave me a call and explained it so much more clearly and with a sense of "let's take this one step at a time" rather than "all hope is lost." From everything I've read on here, it sounds like this reaction from OBs is fairly common, which is just so strange and infuriating to me. Regardless, the genetic counselor recommended skipping the CVS (because it tests placental cells, could be mosaic T13, could be confined placental mosaic T13, and mostly that it would not give us any information about the fetal DNA, which is what really mattered in this case) and to wait for the amniocentesis. The same week, I had my nuchal translucency scan, which showed a normal measurement (1.6). This was reassuring to the doctor and the GC, but I was not going to let my guard down until the amnio. When she told me I would have to wait 4 weeks to get this test done (and another 2-3 weeks for results), I completely broke down, and spent a long month in a deep depression. It's an impossible situation - to be carrying a baby inside you that you may or may not get to keep. I tried to detach myself emotionally from the pregnancy entirely, which felt so terrible, but it was a mode of self-protection. I distanced myself from friends and family and lost all my joy and hope. So many of you on this subreddit seem capable of being optimistic and patient, and I applaud you for that. I am lucky to have had my husband by my side as a logical reminder that the odds were in our favor with our PPV of ~12%, meaning that there was an 88% chance everything would be just fine.
16 weeks: I went in for the amniocentesis. They did an ultrasound first to check for any T13 markers, of which there were none, so we continued with the procedure. They told me I should have the FISH results within 2-3 days, the chromosome analysis in 1-2 weeks, and the microarray results in 2-3 weeks. I felt completely hopeless hearing these wait times after having waited for what felt like a lifetime already.
3 days after amnio - we received a negative/clear FISH result - no evidence of T13 in the fetus. The genetic counselor gave us a call and let us know this was a great/huge first step in the right direction. I was still terrified that there may be some mosaicism in the fetus.
10 days after amnio - (on our 2nd wedding anniversary) we got both our microarray and chromosome analysis results at the same time. They were both negative/clear - no evidence of T13 in the fetus. The GC informed us that this likely meant there was some extra material/low mosaicism in the placenta (confined placental mosaicism) that was picked up in the NIPT, but it's also possible that it was a false positive entirely. I told her I was surprised by the quick turnaround on these results, and she said that sometimes negative results come back quicker than positive results or those that require more investigation/analysis. We were so relieved, but it was (and continues to be) so hard for us to flip a switch from complete fear and darkness to joy and excitement. We were then looking towards the anatomy scan for more evidence that everything would be ok.
20 weeks - we had our anatomy scan, and our baby boy looked great - no issues! We felt that this was the last item on the checklist before we could really exhale.
Our MFM will continue to monitor the fetus and the placenta - if it is truly CPM, then we need to keep an eye on the placenta to make sure it continues to do its job, as it can be affected by this, and could also contribute to things like preeclampsia or low birth weight. So far, so good. We have our next growth scan at 24 weeks and are looking forward to seeing our little guy. I am still a little scared (and a lot traumatized) every day, hoping everything continues to go well. I guess this is an introduction to parenthood in that we will never stop worrying about our child. We just had to start worrying a little earlier than a lot of people.

The Valyrrans attacked head on supported by a company strength element of Liberation mechanised. The show of force was overwhelming and the sounds of slaughter became quite loud especially in the areas Vilkes had been let loose. Namely the Trade Town & the Stairs.
Liberation wass advancing in all sections while the Praetorians moved around to cut off any retreat. It barely took an hour and while Liberation took some casualties the abhumans apparently did not.
All that remained was the town center, Known as the Grain House for rather obvious reasons, in its basement, the prisoners. Vilkes reported the prisoners location, how she got that information became clear as she didnt cut the vox before the screams of some unlucky farmer was heard in everyones ear.
Kaia grimaced. "Continue the attack, surround that town hall our people are inside."

Jess was on edge, she paced back and forth like some wild animal, the Valyrran regularly smashing her fists into the shield, even though it burned her hands with each attempt. The others all remained in their original cells, although Tammy had been moved in with Lomwic and Keating again.
The other Valyrrans were in no shape to fight. Biven encouraged them to wait as the sounds of fighting was getting closer and closer.
Jess was not speaking at all. She was more worried Tammy would get herself killed.
Their room was empty bar the singular drone, the guards had rushed upstairs where the sounds of gunfire could be heard by the abhumans present.
(Valyrrans 18 Liberation 13 All rolls have a + 2 for this and low casaulties as its not really a tough battle. So 20 and 15)
