Why does he have clearance for something some claim to be fictional?
His time working on ARPANET for the DOD was way back in the 1970s. Why would a man most famous for his decades of history books pursuing aliens/NHI — not even any real nuts and bolts military and aerospace angles —but through a lens of mythology, fables and old religious tales even have a US government presence?
Why would a retired computer engineescientist, investor and historian of human mythology as relates to aliens even have a US government role for decades on end, let alone security clearance for chasing topics skeptics say is on the level of leprechauns, hobgoblins and angels?
How do we reconcile this?

Let's talk about TPKs. A LOT of TPKs. This past year, I've been running with a relatively new group. Generally Pathfinder, but most recently D&D 5e.
We have not made it past 10 sessions in any campaign. -.-
I tend to be a "let the dice fall as they may" DM. I don't go hard on my players, but I also don't pull punches; it's my opinion that without challenges and consequences, a large part of the edge is gone. Who cares about combat when you know you'll always survive?
The dice gods giveth, the dice gods taketh away. But with this group, the balance seems horribly skewed. I've run a few campaigns where the VERY FIRST encounter proved to be fatal (funny enough, on the rare occasions they get to 'boss fights', their luck tends to flip and they win in short order).
I understand "give them an out that isn't death." But I generally run published campaigns, and in some of those, capturing the PCs makes no sense. When a mercenary groups goal is to raze a village to the ground, I don't see them showing mercy to a handful of would-be heroes that get in their way.
But after a year of party wipes, my morale and faith in myself as a DM is crumbling, tbh.
...I don't know if I'm looking for advice or just venting. I just needed to get this off my chest.

Honestly I felt like I was doing better this week (was broken up with a month ago), but I found out something tonight that I know is going to make me overthink.
For some background, I was in an official relationship with this man, let's call him Max, for literally only one month!! We saw each other for a month before Max asked me to be his gf, and he progressed things very quickly. Met me at the airport when I got back from a trip, so he forced my hand in meeting my mom, he invited me to his Friendsgiving, introduced me to his parents, and also pressured me a bit into meeting my parents. The week before we broke up I had found out that Max had hooked up with this girl who I am loosely connected to. Let's call her Sam. My really close friend, let's call her Olivia, had seen Sam a few weeks ago and told her that Max and I were dating. Sam was very giddy about it because she thought it was funny that she had hooked up with him and now I was dating him. She then started telling Olivia all this unsolicited information about Max like his past relationship, and how he left his ex abruptly. Sam was somewhat close to his ex.
Anyways, so the next week Max broke up with me. There were some other small things that happened, but I was very blindsided by the breakup, especially because I thought everything was going well, plus why would he introduce someone to his parents that he is not serious about?
These past few weeks have been an emotional rollercoaster as I expected, but this past week and a bit I have felt a lot better, until tonight. I was talking to Olivia, and she recently had dinner with Sam's ex. Sam and her ex still keep in touch. Sam's ex said he found out about my breakup up with Max through Sam. I know I shouldn't be thinking about how Sam found out, but my head is spinning. Olivia doesn't see Sam often, so she didn't tell Sam that Max and I broke up, plus we don't have any connections where Sam would find out from someone within my circle. It's making my head hurt how she found out, and makes me believe that Max and his ex are talking or maybe even back together, because Sam is friends with his ex, so found out through her. Anyways I know I shouldn't be thinking this all through, and Max isn't even part of my life anymore, but this whole situation has really messed me up like no other relationship before.
