2024.11.26 04:15 sleightofhand0 Has anyone ever tried to tell defenders to stop playing after an obvious offensive penalty?
Let's say it's 3rd and medium, and your pass rush is clearly held. The flag flies, it's clear as day gonna be a holding call. But since the play is still going, another pass rusher may well get an offsetting penalty like illegal hands to the face, there could be pass interference when the QB chucks the ball, there could be a facemask or horsecollar on the tackle, etc. Now you've got offsetting penalties when there was very little for your offense to gain from going so hard.
Yes, I understand that you could get a sack or a turnover, or stop them short of the sticks or something where you'd want to decline the penalty.
Has anyone considered some kind of code word for the coaches and sideline to yell to signal to your defense to chill when they see the flag fly? The offense can't hurt you, so don't go crazy and just play it as safe as you can? Maybe for special situations?

After this season, they really need to take a hard look at the playoff format. On top of that the selection criteria. Cus 2 big glaring issues stand out.
1) If I’m Oregon. I am playing a close game with Ohio State in the Big Ten Chip, and then just straight up laying down and letting them score and win. The 1-seed, which will undoubtedly be the winner, is playing either Georgia or Tennessee, both of which are top tier teams that can compete with either of those Big Ten teams and could even beat them, whereas the loser gets the cakewalk of Arizona State and Boise State. And yeah that’s just this year, but regardless of who it is, the 1-seed is usually going to be playing either a big ten or SEC powerhouse that didn’t win their conference, whereas the 5-seed is going to be cakewalking through 2 inferior conference champions.
2) I understand that the wins gotta mean something, and I know It’s probably gonna go over y’all’s head cus y’all are just gonna chalk it up as an SEC fan doing what we do, but I’m still gonna say it. There is WAYYY too much stock put in records.
•Don’t get me wrong, I’m not going to say or even consider hopping a 1-loss P5 team with a 3-loss unless its something above and beyond the normal, like Indiana. That’s not just a bad schedule. That schedule would be laughed at in the fucking AAC. It’s ridiculous. But even then I think it’s safer to leave it where it’s at.
•But generally a 1-loss team and 2-loss team and a 2-loss team and 3-loss team aren’t that different. There’s nothing wrong with a 3-loss team like South Carolina with all close ranked losses and 2 ranked wins hopping a 2-loss Clemson with an unranked loss and no ranked wins. Obviously that one will take care of itself.
• likewise, a 2 loss Tennessee and Georgia with losses to Georgia, Alabama, Ole Miss, and Arkansas and wins over Alabama, Texas, and Tennessee should be ranked above a 1-loss Notre Dame, who has a loss to 5-6 mediocre MAC team Northern Illinois and no impressive wins besides barely ranked Military Academies if you really want to count those.
•it’s not just the SEC teams. It hasn’t reared its ugly head cus the top 3 of the Big Ten are just so dominant over the rest of their inferior conference, but say you’ve got a 10-2 Ohio state with losses to PSU and OSU and a win over Indiana. That is a better team than an 11-1 Notre Dame or Miami who beat nobody.
•I understand that we can’t all play the same schedule, which is fine, but you can’t punish a team for playing 5 to 7 ranked teams and competitively going 9-3 while another team goes 10-2 playing 1 ranked teams and wasn’t competitive in the ranked loss. But simply cus of record the former is out. It just can’t happen. At that point teams might as well just leave their conferences and start scheduling the sun belt, MAC, and FCS to guarantee a spot. You HAVE to look at who teams are beating and losing to. And honestly, who those teams they beat and lost to are beating and losing to. Not all wins/losses to a .500 opponent are built the same.
