2024.11.26 10:44 PichaelTheWise Worst Seasons by a Closer in History
We’re now almost a month into the offseason, so I thought it was time to make my first way-too-detailed post on something that doesn’t really matter (past being a fun research exercise). For this post I was inspired by Brad Lidge, who in 2009 had 31 saves…with a 7.21 ERA, which got me thinking about the worst seasons by a closer. Worst seasons by a reliever encompasses a wide array of mop-up guys in over their head, youngsters called up too soon, veterans on their last legs, etc., but players performing extremely poorly, and yet still retaining the top role in the bullpen is a rare feat. So with that in mind, I decided to assemble a list of the worst closer seasons in history, and to make it somewhat objective, I set these qualifications (and provided some context) for the list;
Minimums: 1974 and on (first season with WPA info on FanGraphs) 50 IP 30 SVO (save opportunities, SV+BS) 25 Saves for seasons before Blown Saves were listed
At Least Three of the Following: 5.00+ ERA 8+ BS 75 ERA+ or worse -1.75 WPA or worse
Context: 75 ERA+ in 2000: 6.36 ERA 75 ERA+ in 2024: 5.44 ERA 75 ERA+ in 1972: 4.35 ERA 106 seasons with 8 BS 20 seasons with <-1.75 WPA (and 30 SVO) 17 seasons with 5.00+ ERA (and 30 SVO) 8 seasons with <75 ERA+ (and 30 SVO) 10 individual seasons qualified Seasons without BS (‘74-‘01) listed as SV/?? WAR will be listed as bWAfWAR
Honorable Mentions: Ron Davis (1984, MIN): 83.0 IP, 29/?? SVO, 4.55 ERA, 4.26 FIP, 8.02 K/9, 4.45 BB/9, 1.19 H9, .288 BABIP, .751 OPS, .737 OPS, 92 ERA+, -3.54 WPA, -0.9/0.0 WAR
Davis had average or slightly below average marks in his underlying stats and even his ERA+ isn’t too bad. However, he was atrocious in high leverage, as his 1984 season had the second lowest single-season WPA for a closer behind the #1 finisher on the list. He would bounce back to a 3.48 ERA with 25 saves the next year before putting up a 7.13 ERA in 112.1 IP over his last three years in the league.
David Bednar (2024, PIT): 57.2 IP, 23/30 SVO, 5.77 ERA, 4.80 FIP, 9.05 K/9, 4.37 BB/9, 1.40 H9, .274 BABIP, 73 ERA+, -1.72 WPA, -0.9/-0.2 WAR
Bednar comes in just short of both the BS and WPA cutoffs, but I included him in some recency bias. He posted the worst closer season since the infamous HR year of 2019, and his ERA was actually higher than the one 2019 season on the list. However, from ‘21-‘23 he posted a 2.25 ERA and went 61/70 in SVO over the course of 179.2 IP, so 2024 was either an extreme outlier or the beginning Bednar’s decline.
Jose Mesa (1999, SEA): 68.2 IP, 33/?? SVO, 4.98 ERA, 5.92 FIP, 5.50 K/9, 5.24 BB/9, 1.44 H9, .320 BABIP, .836 OPS, 94 ERA+, 0.98 WPA, 0.6/-0.9 WAR
With a 1.05 K:BB and a high HR rate (even for the steroid era) Mesa earned his place by posting the second worst FIP of any closer season (worst is the #2 finisher on the list). Among 26 RP with at least 20 saves in 1999, Mesa had the 2nd worst K/9, 4th worst BB/9, 3rd worst H9, 5th worst BABIP, and the worst FIP by a whole 75 points. Despite the atrocious underlying stats and poor ERA, his WPA was actually positive, pushing his ‘99 season to the Honorable Mentions. The season resulted in a demotion to regular bullpen in 2000, but then arguably his best two year stretch as a closer was ‘01-‘02 with the Phillies.
Jose Mesa (2003, PHI): 58.0 IP, 24/28 SVO, 6.52 ERA, 4.70 FIP, 6.98 K/9, 4.81 BB/9, 1.09 H9, .339 BABIP, .825 OPS, 65 ERA+, -1.90 WPA, -1.9/-0.1 WAR
The only repeat offender (albeit both honorable mentions) Mesa’s bounceback ‘01 and ‘02 campaigns devolved back into one of the worst almost closer seasons in history in ‘03. He had the 2nd-worst WPA of 2003 (behind the #4 season on the list) and tied for the 4th-worst all-time single season closer ERA, but he missed the “closer qualification” due to a slight lack of SVO (28, minimum was 30). However the ever-resilient Mesa returned to form with 70 saves and a 3.93 ERA from ‘04-‘05 (decent enough given the time period). Despite strong peak years, Mesa has the highest career ERA as an RP of anyone with at least 300 saves, making him possibly the worst reliever to spend the majority of their career as a closer, and thus worthy of two mentions, despite failing to make the actual list.
Top 10 Worst Seasons by a Closer 10: Jim Johnson (2017, ATL): 56.2 IP, 22/31 SVO, 5.56 ERA, 4.42 FIP, 9.69 K/9, 3.97 BB/9, 1.27 H9, .317 BABIP, .737 OPS, 80 ERA+, -1.76 WPA, -1.0/0.2 WAR
While he had an above average K rate, his BB/9 was mediocre and he got hit hard, especially when it counted. His BABIP and H9 were well above average and his 71% save conversion rate is the second lowest on the list. Johnson would post a solid 3.84 ERA (but a 4.68 FIP) over 63.1 IP the next season before retiring with a career 178 saves (including back to back 50 save seasons from ‘12-‘13), and a 3.79 ERA in 704.2 innings.
9: Todd Worrell (1997, LAD): 59.2 IP, 35/?? SVO, 5.28 ERA, 4.24 FIP, 9.20 K/9, 3.47 BB/9, 1.81 H9, .284 BABIP, .766 OPS, 74 ERA+, -2.39 WPA, -0.8/-0.4 WAR
Worrell was actually decent in a few categories in 1997; he tied for the 9th most saves, his K/9 was well above average, and his ERA doesn’t even look too bad for the steroid era. But Dodger Stadium had the lowest park factor in the league (86), with nearly as low of a HR factor (88), making his H9 (which led all RP with at least 10 saves by 0.23) all-time terrible in context. 1997 would be the last season for the 37-year old Worrell, who retired with a career 256 saves, 10.9/7.5 WAR, and a 3.09 ERA over 693.2 IP.
8: Alfredo Aceves (2012, BOS): 84.0 IP, 25/33 SVO, 5.36 ERA, 4.33 FIP, 8.04 K/9, 3.32 BB/9, 1.18 H9, .290 BABIP, .748 OPS, 79 ERA+, -2.73 WPA, -1.2/0.0 WAR
Aceves sticks out a little bit because he didn’t struggle with any particular stat, and his underlying numbers weren’t particularly terrible. His 79 ERA+ is also the best mark of the group, but he earned his place on the list from his clutch ability (or inability). 8 blown saves resulting in a 76% SVO conversion rate and the 7th-worst closer WPA in history demonstrate that he was not just ineffective, but highly detrimental to the team. Next year he would tally just 37.0 IP with a 4.86 ERA and 1.09 K:BB as a swingman, and was out of the league after 2014.
7: Matt Capps (2009, PIT): 54.1 IP, 27/32 SVO, 5.80 ERA, 4.90 FIP, 7.62 K/9, 2.82 BB/9, 1.66 H9, .360 BABIP, .907 OPS, 71 ERA+, -2.80 WPA, -1.1/-0.1 WAR
Capps’ had mediocre (but not terrible) K and BB rates, but he got absolutely blasted on balls in play. Including HR, almost 40% of balls in play were hits, leading to the 3rd worst OPS of any season on the list. And while he only had 5 blown saves, his WPA was the 6th worst for a closer in history, showing that he wasn’t nearly as valuable as his 84% SVO conversion rate would indicate. Despite his struggles he would follow up with the best season of his career, posting a 2.47 ERA in 73.0 IP and going 42/48 in SVO in 2010.
6: Mike Williams (2003, PIT/PHI): 63.0 IP, 28/35 SVO, 5.57 K/9, 5.86 BB/9, 0.71 H9, .290 BABIP, 6.14 ERA, 4.97 FIP, .781 OPS, 71 ERA+, -2.81 WPA, -1.3/-0.6 WAR
Williams is somewhat unique on this list in that he’s the only one who had above average BABIP/HR marks, it’s just that he was awful at everything else. Williams’ already sketchy walk rate as an RP (4.41 BB/9 from ‘97-‘02’) ballooned to a 5.86 mark in 2003, one that actually surpassed his K/9 (his worst showing in that stat since converting to RP in ‘97). His 0.95 K:BB is the only sub-1.00 mark in the group, and his WPA was the 5th-worst individual mark all-time for closers. 2003 was the last season for the 34-year old Williams, who would retire with a career 4.45 ERA and 144 saves over 768.1 IP.
5: Edwin Diaz (2019, NYM): 58.0 IP, 26/33 SVO, 5.59 ERA, 4.51 FIP, 15.36 K/9, 3.41 BB/9, 2.33 H9, .377 BABIP, .834 OPS, 74 ERA+, -1.75 WPA, -0.6/0.0 WAR
The worst closer season of the 2019 rabbit ball year, Diaz was his usual dominant self when it came to K’s and his walk rate was passable, but he got absolutely murdered on balls in play. Including HR, 45% of his balls in play were hits and his H9 was the highest of any closer season by far (2nd place: 2.04). Plus his .547 wOBACON was the exact average of the ‘21-‘24 numbers of Ohtani (.524) and Judge (.570), an almost unbelievably poor result. However, he’s righted the ship, pitching 204.0 IP with a 2.60 ERA and a 2.11 FIP, and going 90/109 on SVO in the five years since.
4: Ambiorix Burgos (2006, KCR): 70.2 IP, 18/30 SVO, 5.60 ERA, 5.89 FIP, 8.84 K/9, 4.54 BB/9, 1.96 H9, .327 BABIP, .890 OPS, 81 ERA+, -2.15 WPA, -0.8/-1.3 WAR
Burgos’ 60% SVO conversion rate and -1.3 fWAR were by far the worst in the sample, and his 12 blown saves weren’t even tied until Emmanuel Clase in ‘23. Clay Holmes surpassed him this past season, but Clase and Holmes had 44 and 30 saves, to Burgos’ 18. The terrible results make sense though given his .890 OPS against, which was fueled by a bloated walk rate and absolutely disgusting HR numbers (with Kauffman as a home stadium no less). The 22-year old Burgos never developed past his awful 2006 with only 23.2 more career MLB innings, all in 2007.
3: Shawn Chacón (2004, COL): 63.1 IP, 35/44 SVO, 7.11 ERA, 6.57 FIP, 7.39 K/9, 7.39 BB/9, 1.71 H9, .303 BABIP, .914 OPS, 68 ERA+, -2.66 WPA, -1.5/-1.1 WAR
While Chacón had to contend with Coors Field, that’s no excuse for a walk rate of 16.5%, a K:BB of 1, or an ERA+ (which includes park factors) that was 3rd worst in history for a closer. His .914 OPS is the highest in the sample and his 6.57 FIP is the highest of any qualifying closer season by a whole 65 points. His FIP was even the highest mark of any RP, period, in 2004 (by 36 points). 2004 would be Chacón’s first and last year as a closer, and while he stuck around four more years, it was as a swingman with relatively poor results (4.58 ERA and 5.40 FIP).
2: Derrick Turnbow (2006, MIL): 56.1 IP, 24/32 SVO, 6.87 ERA, 4.83 FIP, 11.02 K/9, 6.23 BB/9, 1.28 H9, .329 BABIP, .820 OPS, 65 ERA+, -2.99 WPA, -2.4/0.0 WAR
While Turnbow had the 7th best K/9 of any closer with 20+ saves in 2006, striking out people was the only thing he did well. His 6.23 BB/9 was almost double the league average, he blew 8 saves (75% SVO conversion), and had 4th lowest WPA and 2nd lowest ERA+ of any closer season in history. Somehow, Turnbow was an All-Star in 2006 (his only nomination), and while his 2nd half (11.29 ERA, 3/5 SVO) dragged down his numbers from the 1st half (4.74 ERA, 21/27 SVO), it’s still a head-scratcher. It would be Turnbow’s last year as a closer and he would be out of the league after 2008, pitching just 74.1 more innings with a 5.57 ERA and 7.14 BB/9.
1: Brad Lidge (2009, PHI): 58.2 IP, 31/42 SVO, 7.21 ERA, 5.45 FIP, 9.36 K/9, 5.22 BB/9, 1.69 H9, .355 BABIP, .912 OPS, 58 ERA+, -4.60 WPA, -2.6/-0.8 WAR
The crème de la crème and the very inspiration for this post, Brad Lidge’s 2009 may never be outdone in terms of truly god-awful results by a full-time closer. 11 blown saves in a season tied for the 2nd most at the time and still ties for 4th most today. His .912 OPS against is topped only by Chacón’s Colorado-aided .914 mark. His 58 ERA+ is 7 points lower than the 2nd-worst season (Turnbow’s ‘06). And his WPA not only trailed (or led for these purposes) all closer seasons by -1.08 WPA, but was the worst WPA mark for any pitcher since records are available (1974). Lidge pitched three more seasons with good results (3.39 ERA over 74.1 IP) but lost the closer role after 2010 and struggled mightily with command (5.81 BB/9). He retired with 225 saves and 7.8/11.5 WAR in 603.1 IP over 11 seasons.

2024.11.26 10:44 Rough-Dimension-9797 Does a Low-Priced Rooftop Tent Always Mean Low Quality?
When I was shopping for a rooftop tent three months ago, I kept seeing this common sentiment: "You get what you pay for." It made me hesitant to consider more affordable options, fearing they’d compromise on quality. But then I decided to take a chance on the Topoak Galaxy tent, which I got for $1,498 after discounts. https://topoakoverland.com/products/galaxy1-0 I got the discount on a YouTube review
Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much for that price. I thought it’d be decent at best, but nothing special. However, after using it for an entire summer (including some heavy rain), I’m blown away. Here’s what impressed me: The stitching, materials, and overall construction are surprisingly solid. It doesn’t feel cheap at all. It’s clear that a lot of thought went into the layout. The tent is spacious and feels larger than traditional rooftop tents with its u-bar design The tent ended up being a fantastic companion for my summer adventures, and it made me rethink the assumption that a lower price automatically means lower quality. I also realized just how unreasonable the pricing in the rooftop tent industry used to be and how incredibly high the profit margins were.
