In a study by Alexander Magidow, Towards a Sociohistorical Reconstruction of Pre-Islamic Arabic Dialect Diversity, the fourth chapter discusses the Arabization of North Africa.
I will present here the dates mentioned, which are related to the progression of the conquests and their connection to the Arabization of Tunisia specifically, as it has a direct link to the Arabization of Malta.
Here is the author's timeline:
- 79 AH (698 CE): Arabs capture Carthage and establish control in Tunisia.
- 184 AH (800 CE): Aghlabid rule begins, accelerating Islamization and Arabization.

According to these dates, the Arabization of Tunisia occurred within only 177 years. Given that Maltese today speak a language closely related to the dialects of North Africa, specifically Tunisian, we can observe a clear connection. This is evident in the comparison between the Maltese language and Tunisian dialect. For instance, the Maltese sentence:
"Is-Sarduk u l-flieles tiegħu qagħdin jilagħbu mal-qattusa"
literally translates to: "The rooster and his chicks are playing with the cat."
This sentence is simultaneously Maltese and Tunisian, reflecting not just lexical similarity but also shared syntactic structure.
By contrast, in Egyptian Arabic, the sentence would be:
"ed-dīk w-frākhū b-yelʿabū maʿa l-ʾuṭṭa"
And in Saudi Arabic, it might be:
"ad-dīk w-frākhah yilʿabūn maʿ al-giṭṭah."
The only shared element between the North African variety and Levantine or Gulf dialects is the verb "yilʿabū" ("to play").
Meanwhile, in Berber (Tamazight), according to the Glosbe Dictionary (English–Berber), the corresponding words are quite different:
The cat (qattūsa) is called amcic.
The rooster (sardūk) is called ayaziḍ.
The chicks (flieles) are called icewcwen.
While Berber languages have several dialects, it seems unlikely that the Tunisian-Maltese terms derive from Berber origins.
So, to believe the Arabization theory, we must accept that:
- A few thousand Arab soldiers somehow replaced the Punic/Amazigh languages of Tunisia in 177 years—without genocide or mass displacement.
- This Arabization then spread to Sicily and Malta, shaping Maltese into a mirror of 9th-century Tunisian Arabic.

My wife and I have a 4 year old corgi that has developed a very protective personality around us when it comes to other dogs. In her earlier years she was pretty good around other dogs but now she gets very snappy when other dogs try to come near us. My parents dog-sit for us regularly and she gets along great with their English Bulldog whenever we aren’t around. They could spend a week playing with toys and eating/sleeping around each other with no problems, but as soon as we’re there she gets very defensive and agitated when he’s in the room. She bites his face and will come running across the room to attack him for seemingly no reason. If we are on walks and pass another dog she acts all excited like she wants to greet the other dog but once it gets close she can start snapping in an instant. It’s the point where I don’t allow her near these other dogs any more and I think it’s only encouraged the aggressive behavior.
The breeder we got her from has 3 new puppies for adoption and my wife really wants one, saying we should give her a chance and she’ll be nice to a baby, but I’m not so sure. I feel like it’s a really bad idea to bring another dog into our home and share the same food and sleeping areas (aka “her territory”). If she’s already very protective passing other dogs on walks and visiting family I feel like it will be even worse at home.
Can this behavior be adjusted at almost 5 years old and is this something that she can warm up to with a new puppy or are we better off being a one-dog household? I don’t want to bring a puppy into a dangerous situation and possibly have that dog adopt the same behavior so we have two aggressive dogs. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!

I’m a third-year PhD student in Europe at a top university with two advisors who couldn’t be more different. Advisor #1 is supportive and encouraging—when I published my first prestigious paper, they celebrated with me and gave constructive feedback that actually helps me grow.
Advisor #2? Total opposite. Every meeting is a barrage of negativity: “You don’t know enough,” “This isn’t good enough,” etc. Even with two prestigious papers under my belt, they constantly nitpick and make me feel inadequate. It’s exhausting and makes me question myself.
It used to affect me to the extent where my life at home with my family would be affected as i would always be moody or simply depressed. Every day prior to a meeting would feels like a descent to hell. I am trying to adjust my attitude and try not to take it all personally. Still it is hard.
Is this normal in academia? Is constant negativity from an advisor supposed to “build character”? How do you cope with someone like this? Would love to hear your thoughts.
