Retrospective Time is here once again!!
It's here now.
There's nothing you can do to stop it. :)
Before we get into this tournament though, we've gotta discuss some shenanigans that were afoot between this and the last episode, and it involves the Elo.
So something that I thiiink got explained at this point either in the sub or Youtube comments (If not, too bad I'm explaining it now anyways) is that this season's invitational finale would be decided by Elo rankings, so the top 16 CPUs at the end of the season would see an appearance in the finale. This is a misstep that leads into its own whole major problem, but I'm gonna save that talk for the finale, where we actually see the fruits of this change. Right now, the reason it's important is that it gives a motive in potentially wanting to tamper with said Elo.
From what I can tell, Jacob and co wanted Rosa to be present for the season 4 finale for- Some undisclosed reason. This was naturally a problem because at the time, Rosa's pre season 4 1-10 ratio was severely dragging her down. She'd had two Finals appearances under her belt at this point, with one as that tournament's champion, and she still wasn't anywhere close to the top spots. That should be fine, just change plans around based on what's actually happening and improv like always.
...But whatever they had in mind made them want her in the finale really, REALLY badly. So badly that between episodes, they gave Rosa a random extra win against Zelda from a completely unlabeled, off screen tournament or match of some kind. I remember this lighting the sub on fire for a hot minute, both cause it was outright tampering with the rankings, which feels like a very obvious, unfair no-no in a series like this, and cause nobody- Said anything. They just added the extra win quietly, not bringing any attention to it at all, like they were hoping no one'd notice.
After a stink was made about it, they did revert the win and just separated her into pre and post-Timeskip Rosa, which wasn't really ideal in my eyes because power shift or not, she's still the same Rosa, but it fixed the problem and was at least a more understandable change to boost Rosa's chances of appearing in the invitational, so I can't be too mad. So long as they aren't trying to officially count offscreen matches to the characters' elos, that's what really mattered at the time. Still, just a problem that felt like recounting for this retrospective.
HOOH OKAY. With the overly winded tangential prelude aside, have some highlights.
Luminary vs Mario (Strong start out the gate with some very wonky kills, Mario getting a weird cape kill for the first stock, then Luminary down airing Mario, causing him to bump his head against the stage and fall for his last stock. Fun game overall with some good plays in-between)
Ridley vs Ness (Ness disrespects Ridley with constant offstage PK Fires and Thunders, only for Ridley to return the favor with an offstage side B moments later. Ridley was unfortunately cheesed a bit by PK Starstorm, but he got his clip, and that's good enough for him)
Audible Link vs Ken (Alas, poor Ken, suffering another unfortunately painful loss in bracket)
Solo vs Rosalina & Luma (For the first time since season 4 started, Rosa actually plays really bad, falling in round 1 after a tense final stock as the third Hero moves on in bracket)
Eight vs Tony (Wow this one hurt. Commanding three stock from Eight with a particularly nasty set of Zaps followed by a devastating Kacrackle Slash edgeguard)
Zelda vs Ganondorf (Powerful game by Ganon, really not letting Zelda breathe for much if any of the game. She got an FS kill, but that can really only take you so far)
Luminary vs Ness (Another destructive game, helped by Luminary surviving against two PK Starstorms in a row)
Erdrick vs Audible Link (Not much to say other than WOW that was a nasty Kazap to close out the match. Poor Link just didn't get to play the game there)
Solo vs Major (A surprisingly hype match as Major manages to take down Solo in a commanding three stock)
Major vs Ganondorf (Major's moment of three techs in a row while repeating "I always tech" was actually pretty hype. Had a good match against Ganon otherwise too)
FINALS: Erdrick vs Major (EXTREMELY tense Kamikazee play by Erdrick that barely misses thanks to Major getting invulnerability frames by grabbing the ledge alongside a nasty Forward Smash to Final Smash. Erdrick starts to make a comeback, but it's still not even close, Major being a stock up as he Up Smashes Erdrick and takes the tournament)
THUG FINALS: Major vs Luminary, Erdrick, Solo & Eight (A hilarious Thug Finals that wasn't even remotely close, ending in a painful Whack against Major to close out the game with the Hero Gang only losing one stock, and Eight not even being touched)
Right, talking point time.
1: The goddess losing her touch?
So Rosa showed up in this tournament once again, and her match here really stuck out to me, just because this is the first time it felt like she... Actually played kinda bad since season 4 started?? She missed two final smashes, not even making an attempt to throw her opponent into it both times despite doing that in previous games, then proceeded to SD, for literally the first time since Endgame. This kinda gives the impression that finally losing a match in bracket kinda shook her confidence, in a sense. It being a finals lost to a comparative newbie probably didn't help, either. Some fun story there, for sure. Gotta appreciate it where I can.
2: Ranting about PK Starstorm hate again and you can't stop me
Right okay, I just need to get this off my chest cause it's actually starting to tick me off a little. This is the first time Ness and Zelda have shared a bracket since season 4 Ness hate started, and I can kinda see why people pinned a target on her specifically. Namely the fact we go from Ness v Ridley where Jacob literally goes "See Ridley can't even do anything about that, come onn" as Ridley lost his last stock to Starstorm, to Zelda v Ganon where he then goes "Zelda's number one on the elo right now, but I think Ganon's number one on this stage - But Zelda FS is still number one Final Smash in the whole game". No complaints, no whining about "Cheap kills", no nothing, literally just "Zelda FS strong lul" and moving on like it's the most acceptably expected thing in the world. It's hard not to see a bit of bias, and considering Zelda and Ness share the next two brackets too, I wouldn't be surprised if more of these moments show up.
It's even more poignant when someone actually manages to avoid Starstorm for a change. Twice. It helps the story that it was Luminary specifically granted, implying the newcomers have some intimidating, secret strategies we aren't aware of (Kinda the same effect as Dark Pit being the first person to tech Zelda's Final Smash in Endgame), but still, combined with a few moments of thinking "Oh they totally could've dodged that" throughout Ness's matches with FS, it almost makes me want to believe it isn't that Ness's final smash is "Unavoidable", but more that the CPUs just don't know how to do it. It's always been a bit frustrating, but the actively drawn comparison between Ness and Zelda here just made it feel really egregious this time.
3: Heroes steal the show
This is the first tournament to include the second Fighter Pass character of Dragon Quest's Hero, and they went all out with the representation by including all four hero skins as separate fighters. This then backfires on them a bit in a way , as every hero makes it past round 1 and two of them make it to semifinals, guaranteeing one a spot in finals. As Jacob began painting it, these guys showed up from outta town and started rocking everyone in bracket, almost like a collective group or gang. This image is then further cemented when the Heroes, after losing finals to Major, jump him in a 1v4 Thug Finals that doesn't feel fair in the slightest. In a weird twist of irony, their performance in this tournament was painting the Heroes as villains, thugs that came in, acting like they owned the place, and ganged up on the champion after they lost the tournament.
It probably doesn't surprise you to learn that these four eclipse every other character so far as the highlight of season 4, and carry INAHftfS2 singlehandedly into being a super entertaining tournament to watch. If you ask any CPUCS fan to name a non-Mii character from season 4, the Heroes probably share a spot with Bowser as the most significant additions, if not eclipse him entirely. They feel like season 1-3 characters with how handily they managed to make their mark on the series from just one highlight episode and some accompanying improv storytelling, and from a season that's been pretty light on notable new blood, I appreciate them a lot for it.
4: Major Duncan: Hero by Circumstance
Unfortunately, the Heroes making such an impact as bullies in this tournament had an adverse effect on Major's villain arc setup from last episode. The narrative basically needed someone, anyone to stand up to them after they all took their round 1 games, and unfortunately, Major was the one who inadvertently took up the mantle. In a bubble, this is an excellent showing from Major both in commentary and gameplay, getting some pretty hype moments and games all culminating in him taking down the Hero threat and winning his first ever tournament, it just sucks knowing the context of the villain arc we ended up kinda losing in translation along the way. I think they tried to salvage it after this with some wibbly wobbly "Oh this takes place before X tournament" or whatever, but it's easier to just take the L CPU improv gave you at that point than try to hold onto whatever idea you had in mind.
That said I'm still very happy for the cosmic karma that was the Hero Gang ambushing him in Thug Finals and destroying him so handily that one of them didn't even get hurt. One of the funniest Major moments I'd say, topped only by his SD to Wolf and ensuing salt from it in Worlds Collide.
Decent tournament overall. Not a lot of specific plays jumped out at me, but there was a lot of just generally hype games this time, and having the Heroes to liven up the party was definitely a huge plus. Next time?

Looking for some input from people who has flown both. I am currently a 737 guy and am thinking about switching to the 320, the problem is I lose about a year of seniority. I don't have any real problems with the 737 but have heard the 320 is much nicer and more comfortable. Is the bus really a years worth of seniority better or should I just stay where I am at?

I currently work fully remotely in doc review compliance for a dual registered broker dealeRIA. I have my FINRA Series 7, 66, and 24 licenses. The job is killing me, partly due to limitations on my (approved) outside business activity, and partly because working from home isn’t working for me. So I’ve been looking for an in-person job.
In November 2023, I had to file for chapter 13 bankruptcy. This will last for another four years, and it’ll stay on my U4 for another nine years. This has been a barrier for me finding another job in this industry.
I have a four year degree in social work, I have experience with financial aid, sales, brokerage operations, and compliance.
Where do I go from here? I currently make around $65k or so in a medium cost of living city, and I’m having a hard time thinking of any way to maintain my current quality of life while looking for another job.
