As the headline suggests, the breakup hit twice since it was done on the day of my birthday. To add cherry on cake, we have to live in the same house for almost a year due to some unavoidable circumstances. Meaning, I have to actively watch him move on like I meant nothing. He has been out and about since the break up. Comes back home quite late. While I am still picking up the pieces and crying myself to sleep every night.
My self esteem has taken a complete hit. I hate myself for not seeing the signs leading up to the break up. He had not touched me for 9 months, he was always working and would rarely even make out let anything else. But he would bread crumb me time to time, talking about marriage or how he loved me. Enough to keep me in the loop.
His reason for break up, “we are not compatible” which apparently he realised after 6 years and me moving across the globe so he can be close to his family and friends.
I gave up so much of myself in this relationship and completely lost myself. I have friends, hobbies and things that keeps me busy. But I think of him 24/7. It takes a lot to not share that with him and to avoid contact with him as much as I can considering we stay in the same house.
What can I do move past the heartbreak and lack of self worth? The relationship has completely destroyed me. I have been cheated on, lied to and many other things during the relationship. And I stayed because I loved him and hoped he would change and he did until he didn’t want to anymore. I just can’t comprehend how someone can let go of someone who literally moved mountains for them.

I (M28) grew up mormon and got married quite young (24)
I was driven heavily by a sense of duty to provide and it caused me to spend a lot of my early twenties grinding and working.
I’ve recently deconstructed Mormonism and am enjoying life much more now with the sense of freedom to choose my path and not be so driven by duty.My wife is still mormon but very normal and supportive of me doing my own thing within reason.
We have a 1 year old.
As I think about the possibilities of my life, where it could have/would have gone differently, pretty much the only thing I regret (that I feel like I can do something about) is not doing extended travel before I settled into all the responsibilities of adulthood. I’m trying to manage the fact that I’m married with a young child now with my desire to book a one way flight to Asia tomorrow and be gone for years.
I would never abandon my family, but I’m trying to figure out how I can fulfill this need while still being a great husband/dad.
Questions I would love everyone’s take on:1. How much time do you feel okay with your spouse taking for solo/friend trips away from the family? Both how often and for how many days/weeks/months? Would this change with the ages of your kids?2. What age were your kids when you felt like extended vacations/travel with them was enjoyable and worth it?3. How do you manage differences in athletic ability and desire to be outdoors in your marriage, both on dedicated trips and everyday stuff?

  1. Once you’re empty nesters, how would you feel about your spouse leaving for 4-6 months to do a trip you have no interest in?
