2024.11.27 01:51 pomegranate_pops Baby doesn’t chew / gets food stuck
We started solids a month ago and I’m starting to get discouraged! We’ve introduced 25+ new foods, mostly finger foods, but some mashed/pureed. With finger foods, if my baby gets any size piece off (which is fairly rare - she loses interest fast), it always ends up in the middle of her tongue and then stuck in the back of her throat. Sometimes she gags/throws up, but sometimes the food gets stuck back there. Tonight we gave her a chicken drumstick and she got a little piece off. We saw it in her mouth for a bit, offered water, demonstrated chewing with our mouths open, showed her how to spit it out, etc and thought she had eventually swallowed it. But then she was panting and acting sort of manic (still happy) and I felt like something was wrong, even though she was breathing. We got her cleaned up, diaper changed, etc and then I tried nursing her and she immediately had this huge gag/cough moment and out came the piece of chicken.
She’s had sort of similar experiences with oatmeal, egg, strawberry… pretty much anything solid that can break off. It’s always a small piece that she gets off, which is what worries me. Solid Starts says not to worry if baby gets a big piece. But should I worry about these small pieces that she can’t seem to handle??
I often feel like she has a hard time catching her breath when she’s working through having a piece of food in her mouth. She’ll sit there with her mouth open and will yawn, which feels like a desperate attempt for air. I’m worried she’s going to inhale while food is sitting in the back of her throat.
I’m so tempted to just do purees for a bit so she can practice swallowing. I was prepared for gagging on big mouthfuls, but not this.

 | Context: Slides 1-7 are him being upset because I sounded grumpy on the phone, then my mom called and I told him I was going to answer her and I would call him back. She just had her car worked on so I was making sure everything was okay Slides 8-17 are after he hung up because he called about fostering a dog and I said it probably wasn’t a good idea. I admit I probably sounded annoyed but this was literally 10 minutes after the previous issue we just had. And I told him today I wanted the day to myself and he already asked twice for me to come over to see him. Apparently this is just his way to hijack my time since I’m not coming over? I don’t know. I don’t blame anyone if they don’t want to read though all the texts lol but I guess I’m wondering if I come off as unsympathetic and rude? Hello, I’m a student pilot nearing the end of my PPL. I want to get a jumpstart on Instrument as there are many sales going on right now. I used pilot institute for private and it was helpful, but I think I like the way flight insight presents information more from watching YouTube. I’m only choosing from one of these two programs.
