Would it be possible to pursue legal action against a university that has taken me to collections for tuition debt, despite experiencing enormous trauma and emotional distress that this university ignored even after expressing mental distress and reported sexual assault from a peer? I submitted a debt appeal to the state office where I was sent to collections, but I am considering whether it is possible to sue the institution. I would also love any advice for how to continue into a legal career and how to study for such until I finish my bachelor’s degree. I have been waiting since 11/6 for a response to an institution that made me want to kill myself out of guilt for not being mentally stable through my educational process.
For context: I experienced sexual assault my freshman spring from a student after being peer pressured into going to a party. I experienced psychosis after the assault. I expressed distress from studying material involving sexual trauma to a mythology professor, who referred me to the school authorities for further guidance. Upon reporting the student by name, the school told me it was out of their jurisdiction because it only qualified as “misconduct” to them and it happened at an off campus event. I unfortunately could not return to a good standing academically after this situation. I was still distressed by seeing this student on campus with multiple different women, which felt alarming for knowing that he was capable of continuing this behavior with unknowing peers. I left campus for a gap semester out of lack of financial support, but returned for another spring semester out of abuse at home despite attempting to study psychology, which just changed something for me.. I unfortunately lost a scholarship from my grades dropping while mentally distressed, and the school denied my appeal for the scholarship based on my academic standing. Throughout that entire spring semester, I experienced heavy side effects from a medication including abdominal bleeding that left me constantly exhausted with anemia. I spent the entire semester missing class from mental exhaustion after attempting to get help with my financial liability to the university while also having to get iron infusions from being so anemic. The school’s support system ran me in circles of anxiety as I was just crying in the support staff’s office and all she could respond was that there was nothing they could do for me, except kick me off campus in one weekend even after I expressed I had no where else to go and no money to leave campus altogether as I was an out of state student. I couldn’t attend finals for any classes as I experienced heart palpitations as a side effect from the anemia treatment, and simply gave up on the university to return to my abusive mother’s residence. She kicked me out and I’ve been living with my partner and his off-campus roommate situation, but unfortunately one of the roommates has been sexually harassing me and decided to move into the room next door to continue distressing me through the shared wall. I was cordial and friendly to this guy upon moving in and he decided to be a misogynistic oddball out of “disliking my character” (verbatim quote from a third party), so I would appreciate advice if this grounds for defamation of character.
