2024.11.27 09:40 Artist-in-Residence- Negative reinforcement, GABA agonists and social media's effect on learning and the brain: Dr. Terry Sejnowski

Dr. Terry Sejnowski works in computational neuroscience to understand the brain. However, he also seems to purport a lot of theories in behavioural psychology.

In this interesting episode, I thought some things were of note:

Dr. Terry Sejnowski says that negative reinforcement is much more effective than positive reinforcement and only has to be utilised once to be effective (eg, shocking a rat if it makes the wrong decision) vs. positive reinforcement takes much longer. Hence he is saying that harsh punishment is a better method for learning than necessarily being supportive, nurturing and kind.
Negative reinforcement, harsh punishment etc can be correlated to PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder). PTSD has an effect on long-term memory and hence can be categorised a kind of learning method although r. Sejnowski also says that PTSD "can mess up a person for life". Dr. Huberman also added "one bad relationship can also make one completely re-evaluate relationships".
Dr. Sejnowski said that Ambien, a GABA agonist drug, can double the spindles in your brain during sleep so that you can learn more from past experiences, however, it also causes memory loss from present experiences. Here, I want to mention Ambien is a GABA agonist drug that has a history of accelerating types of dementia, and also Parkinson's. Excessive GABA activity can inhibit dopamine producing neurons in the substantia nigra, causing memory loss and motor loss control.
Dr. Huberman says everything has pros and cons and mentions that use of testosterone or hormones elevate energy but also accelerate ageing (which I've also been mentioning here for awhile 😊)
Dr. Sejnowski also mentions the use of L-Dopa in catatonic patients and how it temporarily allowed them to speak. People with catatonia have low levels of dopamine which decrease brain activity. L-Dopa can work to temporarily restore dopamine levels but I'd like to mention that dopamine output is controlled by the substantia nigra and that L-dopa given to Parkinson's patients often temporarily reduces symptoms but causes the substantia nigra further long term atrophy.
Dr. Huberman says he gets stressed out when looking at social media and prefers reading books or taking walks in nature. Dr. Sejnowski makes the speculation that it could be because he isn't from a generation that grew up with social media. However, I'd like to say that Dr. Sejnowski is most likely wrong because many young people also get stressed and develop anxiety due to social media and this is highly documented. The nature of social media which is dependent on positive and negative reinforcement (ie, receiving likes and shares, comments etc) is a highly stress elevating medium. Chronic use of social media has been associated with depression, anxiety and other behavourial and mental problems.
Dr. Sejnowski says he never pays attention to his dreams nor remembers his dreams, Dr. Huberman thinks dreams may be a gateway to the subconscious. Dr. Huberman often has recurring dreams which Dr. Sejnowski says can be part of slow-wave sleep.
Dr. Sejnowski is working on how the brain figures out intention and he uses the analogy of transformers (a type of neural network architecture that are used in artificial intelligence AI) to learn context and generate new data from sequential inputs. Dr. Sejnowski thinks the key is the basal ganglia. I'd like to note that the basal ganglia is involved in the brain's reward system, which can influence favouring actions with positive outcomes.

QUESTIONS

What are your thoughts about punishment and negative conditioning in order to learn behaviour? PTSD which is the result of a stronger kind of negative conditioning, seems to be a type of behavioural learning and memory which is directly correlated to evolutionary survival. When we experience negative events, through its immediate deposition and retrieval into long-term memory, it teaches us not to repeat that action which almost led to death.
Corporal punishment was used in school for many years, now banned in most nations. Obviously negative conditioning causes long-term psychological damage. How can positive reinforcement and use of reward systems be integrated into learning for maximum efficiency?
Dr. Huberman mentions that "one bad relationship" can cause psychological damage and for one to re-evaluate relationships. How do cautionary tales teach us what not to do, or does the forbidden have an intriguing attraction?

I I have many hobbies: writing, keeping a complex journal, drawing, painting, animating, filming and editing, playing video games—I have so much to do. Yet, I’m always bored. Everyone’s go-to advice is, “Get off social media, go outside, be creative.” I can do all that and more. But I’m still so bored.
College hasn’t started yet, and when I’m not on vacation, I’m not as bored as usual. Still, I go out with friends a lot, and I have a boyfriend. But honestly, I have no words to fully express how bored and empty I feel. I’m on my meds, I don’t get high, and I go to therapy weekly.
I’ve thought about getting a job, but honestly, I’m pretty sure I’d feel just as bored—only now I wouldn’t just be bored but also annoyed. I’ve been there before. Usually, I get so bored that I end up doing stupid, destructive things just to give myself something to fix and force myself to do something.
People often tell me to reflect on what type of stuff fulfills me, what activities make me lose track of time. And there’s many. Drawing and writing being the main ones. But honestly it’s rare when I’m able to do it for over 10 hours. And there’s a lot of time on the day. It makes me feel suicidal, but in a different way. Not looking at it with so much desperation and sadness like I used to. But genuinely considering it, thinking that honestly there’s nothing else to do. I’m not in pain, I’m not sad. I just don’t feel human. To those who’ll recommend going to therapy, I already do, I’ve gone to many, I also have a psychiatrist. It seems like suicide is all there is. The other option is just waiting this out but I don’t really want to. It’s something lazy and weak to think, but I’m so bored and empty I don’t care. I’m just tired

I study in Mumbai's one of the best university, and there's one girl in my class. The very first month of the start of university, she saw me, and when one day she got a chance and the chair beside me was empty, she came and sat with me and asked me to explain what the teacher was explaining.
She also asked me to walk with her throughout the university, and then we went to drink coconut water.
When I was sleepy, but I didn't want to sleep during the class, she used to ask me to get some sleep beside her.
Also, on my birthday, she got a cake and called and again wished me during the evening. She notices every small thing: my haircut, my dressing sense, shoes, even my mobile.
During one lecture, she was exploring my mobile, and then the teacher found us discussing and threw us out. Takes my phone for using my Hotspot and camera and she's sweet as well.

I want to start by saying that I'm STRICTLY free to play, and have never spent money on this game. God bless the whales for bankrolling me. I just got Eitri and I have no earthly idea what the problem was supposed to be.
I blew through the diner way faster than I thought I would. I was busy all weekend travelling and thought I would have to work hard to catch up, but I ended up with a week to spare. It was basically three steps:

Reach the max refill - anyone can do it, probably took 3ish sittings, just like when I was doing my dailies on Friday and Monday instead of normal ladder games.
Escape Jell-o - literally just get lucky, Jell-o table sucks. Ignore the table below it, it's a trick. I reached this table this morning and admittedly hit empty a few times. It's tough but you can't lose forever.
Play Pie - The pie table isn't really competitive at all and every real win brings you meaningfully closer to 15 mil. The first time I made it out of Jell-o, I closed the distance in a few games and that was that. If you want a reward past 15 mil idk what to tell you. Maybe those rewards are reserved for really distinguished players and we just aren't that? Who cares.

The main trick is to have a decent snap line. The extra snaps mean that early retreats are almost always justifiable. I played a modified destroy w/ nimrod win condition (as I'm missing most of the other big pieces, again, f2p). If I didn't draw my win condition by first snap, I retreated. If I did, I moved forward. Retreat if a negatives goes off or an armor comes up. Rinse and repeat, easy as that.
When I first downloaded snap a few months ago, I held off joining the sub as everyone seemed like a tryhard- what the hell happened, guys? Diner is a free mode with a new card as a reward, clear parameters, and an obvious strategy. Why are even experienced players moaning like they're being abused? Is someone making you play Diner? Do you need Eitri that bad?
I personally think people are getting frustrated at this mode because you can't just get the reward the lazy way (time or money). Dumping meaningless grind time doesn't do anything if you can't snap, or you'll just get cleared out and have to wait, and if you want to pay you're way to the top you better have the bank account to support that decision. Instead, the reward goes to players who have a modest amount of skill and strategy and can overcome a straighforward challenge. Since when did gamers resent a challenge?
This game arguably has problems, but Diner is an inoffensive and creative mode that offers f2p guys like me a neat card as a reward for some good wins. I couldn't imagine complaining about it.
