It’s Ten o’Clock
Do you ever stare alone at the waves by the battered wooden dock? I find myself doing it whenever the realness of life comes too close to me When a crack forms on the curtain shielding my eyes And lets out a sliver of moonlight strong enough to blind me.
How long have these waves been here? I didn’t notice them until the moon broke my ever encompassing darkness. They lapped and flowed from crevice in stone to plank by the cloudy metal moors Yet never spoke to me before I saw what I missed.
How deep do you think this ladder goes into the opaque restless water? I can only see two steps down, did you find any more? If I stepped off this ancient dock and onto that tiny ladder, Would I finally see my reflection looking back at me?
I keep coming to this broken old dock when I could fix why I’m here altogether, Take the plunge and talk to those others who ignore me, See what this endless water has to offer. Do you think that I will ever decide to take a dip in this lakeside water?

2024.11.27 11:33 Phil-TheMustardTiger Beginner gear on a budget, leave room for upgrades or not?

Hi!
I'm trying to get into astrophotography, but since I have a history of getting very excited about new hobbies, buying the necessary gear and then suddenly losing interest in it and dropping it altogether, I'd like to take things a bit slower this time. I want to do some Milky Way shots, but also some common DSOs like Orion, Andromeda etc.
I took like 50 short lights from my balcony and tried a bit of processing in Siril. Now I'm hooked.

I'm also not quite sure how much money and time I will be able to spend in the near future, so I'd like to keep it simple for now and see if I'll really stick to it, with all the extra time needed for post processing etc, before I start buying more advanced gear.
This is what I got so far:

  1. Used D5300 with Nikkor 18-105mm kit-lense (250 €)
  2. Nikkor AF 35mm F/1.8G DX (60€) - read so much good about it, going to use it for daytime photography too and just had to get it at that price.
Lenses I'm looking at right now:
  1. Nikkor AF 180mm F/2.8 (170 €) - I've seen a couple of nice pics on astrobin with this lense and read some recommendations about it. Seems to have good value for that price, or am I missing something? The Rokinon/Samyang 135mm is about 400+ € used, that's simply too much atm.
or ..
  1. A cheap zoom-lense, like Nikkor AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6D ED or Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO for like <100-130 € and save up for something better instead?
Mounts I'm looking at right now:
  1. Star Adventurer 2i PRO + Star Adventurer Tripod (360 €, barely used / very good condition) - about to pull the trigger on this one, but now having second thoughts, which is why I made this post in the first place.
  2. Star Adventurer GTi, no tripod, some kind of homemade vixen plate (450 € max., might be able to get a couple € off)
  3. EXPLORE SCIENTIFIC iEXOS-100 PMC-Eight Wifi Gotom, with tripod (300 € max.) - reviews on a couple of shop sites have been good, but I've read about a lot of issues on other forums. Seems to be a lot of tinkering to get it to work, at least for some people.
  4. Sky-Watcher GoTo EQ3 Pro (355 € max., with one broken tripod screw, one missing counter weight stop screw(?) - payload about the same as the 2i/GTi?
  5. Sky-Watcher GoTo EQ3 Pro (450 € max., no known issues)
  6. iOptron SmartEQ Pro Goto (440 € max.)
My thoughts so far have been, the 2i with the Nikkor AF 180mm would be enough to get me started and keep me busy for a while. If I'm still having fun in a couple of months or a year, I could sell the 2i (seems to have a good re-sell value) and save some money to get a better mount, with auto-guiding and a small telescope.
Or would I, even in the beginning, have a much better experience getting any of the other mounts I mentioned and also have at least a bit of an upgrade path? Or would they not be enough for me if I'm still around doing this in like a year?
I'd appreciate any input on this. Thank you!
