Krang! was an old band hailing from Rhode Island in the late 90's as an early love child of the Fort Thunder collective. It had a lovely mix of post-hardcore and noise rock energy, which when combined with overtones and amateurish recording tickles my ears perfectly. It only had a shelf life of roughly a year, and their output was low, with roughly a dozen songs in total. Despite this, I love the music with a burning passion. Is there anything else like it? The original members have gone on to bigger and different things (John Dwyer went on to start Coachwhips and later Osees, Jeff Rosenberg had a stint doing even noisier rock with Dwyer before drumming for Lavender Diamond and having his own lengthy solo career, Brian Gibson has been playing with Brian Chippendale as Lightning Bolt since before Krang even began, and Josiah Webb is doing some shoegaze-y stuff that doesn't really interest me as much as the others), so they're a dead end. However, I chatted with John after an Osees show in October. He signed a copy of the book they named the band after (wasn't lying when I said "burning passion") and gave me some info about the band. He was really surprised.
Physical copies of their music are practically nonexistent, and I don't have Jeff or the guys from Olneyville Sound's phone numbers (yet), but there is a bandcamp (probably set up by Jeff, according to John) with all known recordings of the band.

C'est une rengaine vieille comme le monde: "les jeunes de nos jours ne savent plus ceci, cela", "Le niveau en lecture, en maths, en couture baisse de jour en jour", "Même moi qui ne suis prof que depuis 5 ans, je vois que le niveau a énormément baissé depuis que j'étais au collège".
On entend souvent l'argument "oui mais Socrate le disait déjà, donc si c'était vrai on serait moins doués que les singes aujourd'hui". C'est pas celui-là que je vais utiliser, parce qu'il est un peu fallacieux: il peut très bien y avoir des périodes de déclin où les "vieux réacs" ont raison, suivies de périodes de progrès d'où l'on entend peu de tels discours.
Un autre argument est celui des usages qui évoluent: les jeunes d'aujourd'hui sont moins doués pour ceci car ils sont plus doués pour cela. Mais je n'attaque pas non plus sous cet angle, parce que parfois le "ceci" est tout simplement la lecture ou le calcul mental, qui sont des choses assez intemporelles.
Pour finir, je ne vais pas citer de chiffres parce que ce qui m'intéresse n'est pas de savoir si le niveau baisse ou non, mais de contrer l'argument un peu réac que les gens sortent (sans non plus regarder un quelconque chiffre) sur la base de leur expérience personnelle.
Or les gens qui enseignent ne sont pas tirés au hasard dans la population, mais sont le plus souvent ceux qui étaient parmi les plus scolaires, et qui ont reçu le plus d'éducation à la maison. Non seulement ça, mais qui ont le plus souvent reçu une éducation d'élite à l'échelle du pays ou de leur région, tous les collèges, lycées, et universités ne se valant pas. Ils avaient donc non seulement en général de meilleures notes, prenaient l'école plus au sérieux, avaient une culture plus élargie que ceux de leur collège, puis lycée, puis université, mais en plus leur collège, lycée, université étaient plus souvent plus élitistes que le collège, lycée ou université moyens.
C'est très flagrant dans le milieu universitaire et facilement vérifiable parce que les gens ont leurs CVs en ligne. Même dans la fac de Montcucq-sur-Oise, le corps enseignant est constitué d'anciens de grandes universités ou écoles d'ingénieur réputées, jamais de la fac de Moncucq-sur-Oise.
C'est comme ça que j'entends des gens sortis de l'X ou de Paris 6 se plaindre que leurs étudiants de l'Université de Sanssous-sur-Marne sont nuls à chier et que les jeunes aujourd'hui sont des cons à la limite de la mort cérébrale. Mais mon gros, quand t'étais à l'X ou à Paris 6, les gens de ton âge dans cette fac n'étaient pas meilleurs.
Ces gens-là, qui étaient dans la poignée de % de leur génération en termes de niveau académique, se retrouvent à enseigner "au tout-venant", et découvrent (puisqu'ils étaient avant dans une petite bulle) que la population générale n'a pas le même niveau que les gens qui atterissent à Paul-Sabatier ou la Sorbonne. Ils ne s'étaient jamais mélangés à la population générale et, au lieu d'attribuer la différence de niveau par ce fait sociologique, ils l'attribuent à une évolution dans le temps, puisque c'est l'autre facteur qui a changé entre leur passage à l'université en tant qu'étudiant, et en tant qu'enseignant (idem collège, lycée).
Donc en résumé, c'est qui les cons ?

Going through my records and found this gem. I know they sell for ridiculous prices. Mine isn't perfect, but still damn nice, and one of the original ones pre Pots and Pans. They played at a club I booked a few times. Great band. I'm thinking of letting it loose for a lot less than $2k. That made me laugh. Thinking $300 plus the ride. I'd rather see it go to a real fan.

2024.11.27 14:30 RPSupps Ship Design Help Needed
I’m still new to the game (6-7 weeks) and on my second campaign. I decided to up the difficulty since I didn’t feel super challenged on the first one until the end.
I made the map as big as I could with the max amount of starting PvE players and and FE. I forget all the other setting. Most I kept default.
I have the Ancient Relics and Machine DLC only and I decided to be an Assimilator Cyborg Homolog. I had a great start BUT recently I just go STOMPED on by a neighboring Militant Spiritual leader that wants to stop the spread of my crazy. They are also in an alliance with 2 neighboring spiritual species.
By themselves I would be ok but with the other two it makes the campaign feel almost impossible. The only saving Grace I have is that my tech is great and I feel like I can turn it around if I just made the right fleet setup.
However, my first play through I just used auto upgrade. I just learned there’s a sort of Rock-Paper-Scissors type combat system going on and needed help since it’s really overwhelming with all the YouTube videos to try and narrow down what I would need.
Here’s what the enemy is running (I think)
Corvette (3 in fleet) - plasma canon, disruptor, marauder missile - 2 X neutronium armors, hyper shield
Frigate (3 in fleet) - plasma canon and neutron launcher - 2 X neutronium armors, improved deflectors, small crystal forged plating
Destroyer (2 in fleet) - 2 X Plasma canon, 2 X disruptor, 1 marauder missile - 3 X neutronium armors, 3 X hyper shield, 2 X Shield capacitor
Cruisers (22 in fleet) - 2 X Large Plasma and 1 medium, 1 disruptor - 3 X hyper shield, 4 X durasteel, 1 medium crystal infused plating, 2 X shield capacitor
Battleship (9 in fleet) - Tachyon lance, 2 X Plasma, Large Stormfire auto cannon, kinetic artillery, disruptor - 3 X neutronium armors, 3 X hyper shield, 3 X Shield Capacitor

I need some help. I'm the clueless dad. I know more about these laptops today than I did last week but am still pretty clueless.
My son has been kicking ass lately and I want to get him something awesome for Xmas. Gaming laptop is top of the list for him.
Budget is a concern, looking to stay under $1000. I think the biggest games he plays is Call of Duty and Fallout.
Would this laptop be a good start for him? Also be able to use it for college in a couple years?

I've been horrendously unemployed for far longer than I had hoped to be but it's given me a chance to make a game, and I've found Godot has been an amazing engine to build something really tangible from scratch as a beginner, and get it all done fairly quickly too.
What do you think of the steam page? Trailer and demo to come soon, but for now it's a mining and management game with some silly characters and a slight undertone of... something isn't right here.

2024.11.27 14:30 izzi_sweet Is it normal for hours to be cut drastically this time of year?
Got hired beginning of October. Promised full time. Only have had 1 full 40 hour week.
My managers have said they went from able to schedule 375 hours a week to 311. For the new scheduled week, I'm only scheduled 12 hours and it's not even in my department.
Is this normal?? I would think with it being the holidays they would schedule MORE. But we have a ton of part time employees. Two of them only work 1-2 days out of the week.
Getting really annoyed. I specifically told them I need 30+ hours a week at the very least. They said no problem. I've already applied to different jobs. I don't want to have to wait around for full time... wouldn't of taken this job at all if I knew I would be PT.
