What are some sets of words used to describe rank in different professions (music, engineering, science)? I'm thinking about words similar to novice, amateur, and professional. Both of the definitions you cite are common useage, but the latter is reserved for those who are prone to join many activities, not just someone who recently joined one activity or a company. newbie should be considered a word that references a person that is new to something, inexperienced or otherwise lacks in that particular moment, the knowledge to do some tasks, activities or any other actions in a way that shows experience and knowledge about the usage of how the system in use works, be it a particular game (where it is used most often), a programming language or other ... I'm looking for a term to describe someone who literally has zero knowledge of a topic. Initially I thought of using something like green field but that doesn't really describe the person, it really I would like to create a list of terms, from beginner to expert, using as many terms as possible which represent different levels of expertise. I have constructed by myself: Newbie Novice Rookie Of course, the first question one has to ask pertains to attestation. Douglas Harper dates newbie "by 1969". Second, word formation might offer a clue about stratification. Harper speaks of an ostensible diminutive suffix, which I have to guess has to be -y-, as Harper's refers further to noob and indicates Military Jargon. my aunt died really unexpectedly a couple days ago and it’s been hard on my entire family, including me. i started at barnes and noble a couple weeks ago. today i completely forgot i had work and called around the time my shift started and explained my aunt died and the shift had completely left my mind. i think it was obvious i had been crying on the phone too. the manager said it was okay and thanks for letting her know but im worried about getting fired/reprimanded for this. should i be worried?

Throw away a mattress? I did look on DSNY but I'm a bit confused. The schedule says both Tuesday and Friday are trash pick up days, but first of all, this thing says Tuesday but my whole street sets out trash on Monday night, so I assume it would be the night before. Second off, I rarely see trash out on Thursdays and I know my super doesn't put ours out then. But also, is Friday THE day for mattresses since the calendar says large items then but DSNY says any trash day.

Hi everyone,
I've just bought a Squier VI and have already fallen in love with it - I'm a guitar player, but have always loved picking up a bass and melting into the heavy tones that a regular guitar just can't quite reach.
Out of interest, how do you guys fit a VI into your live band or recording set-up. Specifically, how do you adjust for the VI competing for the 'regular' bass playe bass instrument.
To be specific, as an example, if I was to use the VI alongside my bass player's regular bass - that's gonna be a lotta bass. Very muddy I'd presume - or is it?
With recording, obviously a lot more lenience in separation of tones can be achieved compared to a live setting - but are most of you replacing the traditional 4-string bass with someone on a VI, or have you a clever way to have a four-string bass plus the VI in a live setting without shearing off the audience's epidermis?

2024.11.27 22:31 Marzipanoply Do I have an antique ivory hand mirror?

I found this at a flea market outside Atlanta about 10 years ago. They gave it to me for cheap because the mirror is cracked. I loved it for the dragon carving. However, it recently occurred to me this may be actual ivory instead of bakelite or celluloid. I'd appreciate help from anyone who recognizes the style and/or can help me ID the material, era, language of the marking etc.
I love learning about vintage and antique goods, but I'm a little out of my depth after trying to google this one.

Oil blowout update So after a solid 3 hours of tinkering with stuff, 2 cans of brake clean, and a lot of exhaust gasses breathed in. Here’s the conclusion I came to
My conclusion is that oil was blowing out of the dip stick tube and that’s how I lost all my oil, that would explain why everything from the power steering pump forward is completely dry, and everything behind it was soaked. This leak was slow hence my 3 mile long oil trail, the reason the puddle underneath the car was so large is I also had a fuel leak on the return filter caused by a lose hose clamp.
One of 2 things happened that caused the dip stick tube to pop up and then spray oil everywhere,
1) I check my oil every time I drive and while I don’t think this is the case it’s certainly possible I didn’t put the tube all the way down
2) the aftermarket catch can that was installed by the PO of the car was too restrictive and allowed the crank case pressure to pop the dip stick out of the tube.
I believe that is the more likely scenario because I’ve been chasing leaks everywhere from the valve cover, to then the oil fill cap gasket. A restricted catch can would certainly drive crankcase pressure up and cause other things to leak. What I have done as a (temporary?) fix is bypass the catch can and I have the breather tube going directly into my turbos filter, when I did this and went in multiple test drives oil would not seep past the dipstick unlike when I had the catch can in place.
It’s still not a perfect solution for multiple reasons but after about 5 miles of test drives at speeds ranging between 30-70mph it’s the best thing I can do at this moment.
Attatched is a picture of the o-ring I replaced. Also not a perfect solution but it appears to seal better than the one that came off, I think. I don’t know none of them seal very well I need to get on McMaster Carr and order something proper.
And for those wondering that is a 2x10mm o-ring with 2 1x9mm o-rings under it to position it, I am probably gonna order something like a 2.5x10mm silicone one and see how that goes
