This is our first major holiday since the divorce. I'm completely moved out into a rickety one bedroom shack. Completely different from the 4 bedroom beautiful, warm, inviting home we have shared for the last 5 years. We're in a disagreement at the moment and she wants nothing to do with me. So for the first time in almost a decade I'll be alone for Thanksgiving. I didn't have the nerve to get myself anything for dinner. I completely flopped it. This is terribly depressing as I love and enjoy my little family so much. This is so foreign to me. It's hurts like no other. No wonder they say holidays are the worst for single people. Well I hope yall enjoy your time with your families and loved ones. I'll be trying to make the most of and more importantly, make it through the day. I've got this šŖšŖ

2024.11.28 00:20 Double-Ad-9621 Will taking my dream job ruin my relationship?
Hi everyone, I could use some advice. I received a TT offer from my dream job recently. I love the school, the students, the colleagues. The pay is fine, location manageable. I canāt believe I got so lucky.
The issue is that my partner is an academic in another discipline and they donāt have a spousal offer for him ā not even a small non TT position. It got shut down immediately in the first convo. Most other jobs havenāt even interviewed so I donāt have another offer for leverage and wonāt have one before my ārespond byā date. He has a temporary position right now thatās outside our country, so in theory I could take the job and we could do super long distance for two years while he finishes his position. During that time heād have to be applying over and over to other jobs, almost none of which will be geographically near this job bc itās not in a place with tons of options. Cross continent long distance for one year is maybe manageable but two years feels really heartbreaking.
On top of that, he now feels that thereās more pressure for his job search. I could theoretically leave this job in a few years if he got a TT job. In that case maybe I could be the spousal hire. Iād even leave to be non TT if he had the TT opportunity. (Academia is one of my jobs, not my sole work, and I never planned on being a SCHOLAR I just like teaching, but it is the source of my most stable income, health insurance etc, not to mention has been my emotional stability.) He doesnāt believe that Iāll be able to leave this job emotionally tho; I am ambitious and value my own career, and he does fear me divorcing him, which I know I wonāt do, but I want to listen to him. Especially because this kind of pressure can change people. I also worry that he could only get non TT offers elsewhere in which case me leaving my TT job for nothing feels impossible.
He could join me back in our country in two years but they may not have anything for him, which would be devastating. Or if they do it would be adjunct work and he fears being in adjunct hell.
On the other hand, i worry that if I turn this job down and he doesnāt get a TT job in the next two or three cycles, or even ever, I will have turned down my best chance at stability and his too. I think TT + adjunct between us is way better than nothing, but I also donāt want to lose him to two years of distance.
This is a person whoās been incredibly supportive of me for years, always putting me first. He says he understands if I take the job, and will keep supporting me. Weāre just both afraid of losing one another over distance, and also afraid of resenting one another if we give up opportunities.
I also know I am so lucky to have any opportunity in this market, and so lucky to have a partner I love. But I am so, so torn. Can anyone here offer any insight? How do situations like this work out? Can they? Will one of us have to give up on academia at some point? And are spousal hires just a thing of the past now?

Hi everyone! I was making Alton Brown's vanilla ice cream, it uses 8 egg yolks. Last time I made it the liquid stayed liquidy and the ice cream turned out perfect. This time after cooling (not freezing, cooling) the mixture it plopped into the machine like custard would. Is this still good to go? I think I let the temp get too high at the end. Insteaad of the recommended 170 I think it got up to 190 for a short period of time.
