IS THE BOKATOR THE FATHER OF MUAYTHAI? SAN KIM SEAN
The Bokator was unknown in Cambodia until 1990 when San Kim Sean returned from the United States to Phnom Penh in Cambodia as a rescued (inventor) of the Bokator. Who is San Kim Sean? San Kim Sean left Cambodia for the refugee camp of Khao-I-Dang in Thailand in 1979 on September 29, 1980 he left Thailand and lived in the refugee camp in Houston in the United States later in the year 1984 he was lived in Long Beach, California. He was a Hapkido Professor at the academy in the USA. He taught Hapkido for ten years in the US without any highlights he was just another Hapkido teacher. But when he returned from the US to Cambodia in 1990 he "recreated" using traditional Khmer boxing as a base and using the name of a supposedly Khmer legend from the Angkorian period to name his new fighting style the Bokator this all with feelings anti-Thai and radical nationalism. He created the Bokator Academy Academy, created the Bokator Federation and even a restaurant, the San Kim Sean Kun Bokator Restaurant Club located on Abacus Lane in Siem Reap. But San Kim Sean only had recognition of his style in Cambodia in 2001 when he was recognized by the government of Cambodia.

THE INFLUENCE OF MUAY BORAN IN CAMBODIA
These photos were taken by French photographer Lucienne Delmas in Battambang, Cambodia in the year 1920 and are kept at the Musée de l'Homme in Paris, France.
Battambang is a place known for fighting in Cambodia was a Thai province for centuries until 1907.
But Battambang was an area ruled by Siam for many years and it had a great influence of Muay Boran fighting for almost 100 years. That's why we see in this photo Cambodian fighters dressed like Muay Boran fighters with Monkong, Prajied, groin protector like the Thais used at the time.

Is Bokator the father of Muaythai?
This is a superficial statement, it comes from the assumption that the Khmer Empire invaded the Kingdom of Ayutthaya and assimilated the Khmer culture. From a Khmer wrestling stand called Bokator based on carvings on the murals of a Temple at Angkor Wat. Bear in mind, however, that these findings show basic movements, which are a foundation shared by all Southeast Asian martial arts (Lethwei, Muay Lao, Tomoi, Muay Boran, Khmer Boxing, Silat), so we have no evidence to say. that the Khmer people are the direct developers and creators of these techniques. Now, it should be noted that the Khmer people were an Indianized population. Khmer culture has much in common with that of the South Indian Tamils. Several martial arts were born in Tamil-occupied territories, most notably: Varmakalai (Adimurai is the fighting part of Varmakalai) resemble not only Khmer fights but also many other fights in Southeast Asia. Indian armed combat further resembles Southeast Asian martial arts such as Yuthakun Khmer Khom and Krabi Krabong. We can say that Khmer culture influenced Thai struggles is an unquestionable fact. As we can also say that Thai struggles influenced Khmer culture. Now to say that the Thais copied the Khmer fight or that Bokator is the father of Muaythai pure speculation without historical, documentary evidence and fact that comes to prove this. Khmer struggles derive from South India. This in itself demonstrates that it was not exclusive to the Khmer. However, Thai martial arts do not just come from Indian martial arts, their development is a bit more complex. Also Thai fights have influence from the south of India and partly from the Chinese of the Tais. The very development of Muaythai. Muaythai is heavily influenced by English boxing. Much bigger than any fighting style. The carvings in the murals of Angkor Wat show the fighting scene of Westilng and Khmer Boxing. And not from a fight called Bokator.
IS THERE PROOF THAT THE BOKATOR EXISTED IN CAMBODIA?
The answer is there is no evidence whatsoever of the existence of a fighting system called Bokator in ancient Cambodia at the time of the Khmer Empire. The only reference to the word Bokator "bok-ah-tau" comes from labokatao which means "to smite a lion". This refers to a story that supposedly happened 2,000 years ago. According to legend, a lion was attacking a village when a warrior, armed only with a knife, defeated the animal with his bare hands, killing it with a single blow to the knee. But the only species of lion that I lived closer to Cambodia was the Asiatic lion and it lived as far west as India. Rather, the big cats of Southeast Asia include the leopard and the Indochinese tiger. And this lion legend is modern. This indicates that this legend came to India and was depicted on the Banteay Chhmar temple mural. Indian culture and philosophy were major influences on Angkor culture. Religious life was dominated by Brahmins who in India also practiced sword fighting and empty hand techniques. The concept of the animal-based techniques of the lion and the bokator probably came about during the reign of the Angkor kings and the concurrent influence of Indian wrestling. • A common misunderstanding is that bokator refers to all Khmer martial arts, while in reality it only represents a particular style.
The allegation of lack of proof of the existence of Bokator at the time of the Khmer empire according to Bokator practitioners and that at the time of the Pol Pot regime (1975 to 1979) or Khmer Rouge regime erased all evidence of the existence of the struggle. However, footage and documents from before the Khmer Rouge Regime show the existence of the Bokator. Not even on the wall of temples in Cambodia does this exist. Only Sculptures illustrating Westling and Khmer Boxing. Isn't it strange that the Khmer Rouge Regime only destroyed the evidence of Bokator's existence and left other fighting styles?

It states on page 882 that the word **BOKATOR which can also be LBOKATOR means short stick and the word KUNLBOKATOR means short stick Martial Arts**. And not an unarmed fighting system.

I am torn between two PhD offers and I would love some advice. For context I am doing it in social sciences.
Option 1: A lower-ranked tier-two university with a supervisor who is deeply invested in my research and has already provided funding, mentorship, and opportunities. They're very supportive and aligned with my work although I would be one of their first PhD students so I have nothing on their supervision and feedback styles beyond what I have seen from the brief time we worked together and their current other PhD student who basically said that their secondary supervisor handles. They also are engaged in lots of different things outside of academia and have mentioned to me that academia for them is not a priority if it doesn’t work out. I know that this supervisor would be very supportive throughout the journey but I am scared of the post-doc life especially that I don’t know how much leverage they have within the academic space.
Option 2: A higher-ranked university with a supervisor who is accomplished and relevant to my field, but I don't have an established relationship with them yet so I don’t have much to base my decision besides their work and speaking to their old and current phd students who have all spoke highly of them. I also have secured funding here so it is not an issue.
They both seem supportive and invested in their students in different ways and would offer me very different types and levels of support which I am aware off. I also know how little institutional rankings actually matter in the grand scheme of things but it could potentially look good on my resume after for post-docs(?). I'm worried about regretting my choice. I guess I also have fear of missing out. I think part of me also wanted the fresh start that option 2 offered but again it comes with uncharted territory.
Do I go with institutional prestige or stick with the supervisor I know and can foreshadow being an available, amazing mentor but perhaps with less experience giving feedback?
