Thanks for checking out my post! I'm a 28 year old dude living in New Zealand. It's hard making friends as a big kid but here I am trying! My best? Probably not. Still trying though? You bet.
So about me: I'm a makeup artist by trade, dog parent to a smooth haired fox terrier, an INFJ if that kinda thing floats your goat, dark lord successor to Sauron, and a big ol nerd. I can commiserate with other people who have posted on this subreddit regretting their dental decisions. My story is a bit complicated.
I had EDs throughout my teens and twenties that did some significant damage to my front teeth. When I was 21 I had veneers placed that were really subpar — too bleach-white with very fake looking edges. However, I got used to them and wore them for over a decade, usually covering them with my bottom lip in photos.
Fast forward to my thirties. The enamel behind the veneers wore off from the EDs and became super thing. On top of that, I developed a canted smile after years of nervous nail biting. (The TMJ was bad at one point but eventually went away).
I was very weary of dentists telling me that my teeth were super thin. One told me I would eventually need crowns. So I decided to go ahead and schedule a consult with a cosmetic dentist that I knew in the area.
She designed a treatment plan that involved Invisalign to correct the cant and make space for crowns. She chose emax crowns for their seemingly natural look. I asked her not to make the crowns too bleach white, to be closer to my natural color.
After a year of Invisalign, I had the crowns placed. The temps looked great to me, but once the permanent ones were placed, I didn't know what to make of the result — it looked off to me, but she insisted they looked great. I trusted her. The before and after photos looked good to me, but I couldn't get used to what I saw in the mirror. Also, the edges felt weirdly thin and sharp.
That was 18 months ago. Since then, one of the crowns chipped and another one turned gray. But that's not the worst part. I can't stand how long they look — the lateral incisors are much, much longer than my natural ones. My gums are still canted while the crowns are straight. And worst of all, the color is completely off. In the sunlight it's not too bad, but any hint of shadow and they turn this awful blue-gray.
I hate it. It's taken a major toll on my mental health, and is all I can think about. I'm afraid of getting more work done and being unsatisfied, and doing further damage to my weakened teeth.
My husband tells me they look fine but I can't unsee all of the imperfections. I just want them to look natural; I don't care about having a perfect smile. On some days I just want to cry.
Do they look as bad as I think they do? I found a cosmetic dentist in my new city and am thinking about scheduling an appointment. Feeling depressed.
