Before everyone calls me dumb for using a 3rd party to book hotels, I had a semi-valid reason for booking 3rd party.
First, I'm a college kid, so if I have an option to save money, I'll take it. I had already booked some hotels directly, but I saw a pretty good deal on my credit card if I booked through Expedia. The prices were cheaper there too, so I thought I'd rebook all of my hotel stays.
My credit card company is pretty reliable generally, so I thought it would be fine to book Expedia through my credit card's link (even though I had heard all the horror stories about booking 3rd party before). Looking back, this was pretty dumb... why would being on my credit card offers make Expedia reliable?
(Can start here for story if you don't care about why I booked through Expedia)
Anyways, I had just took an edible a bit earlier. I hadn't start to feel it yet, so upon seeing the offer, I thought it would be an amazing idea to cancel and rebook my bookings. Bad idea.
After 5 minutes, I was able to rebook 2 hotels. Moving onto the third... my now high ass (both while booking and while writing this rn) didn't read that it was non-refundable. Shit. Now I had two hotels booked for the same nights. At least if they were different nights I could change my itinerary. But no. Genius. Great job.
Immediately after I realized, I called Expedia within literally 2 minutes. After figuring out the automated messaging system, I had finally reached an agent, Rock (yes, that was literally his name--I asked him how to spell it because I was in disbelief).
He said he would talk to the hotel and came back with an excited "Good news!". My intoxicated self cracked a little smile. "There will be a fee of $99". This was on a $300 booking that had boiled down to a few misclicks while high for me. That smile faded and I felt horrible. I asked him if he could get the fee any lower, and he said that he'll do what he could.
While on hold, I decided to contact the hotel (I know, the hotel isn't responsible for any of this). I was panicking. I asked them on Instagram, email, Whatsapp, just everywhere I could contact them. Anyways, after a few minutes of listening to classical music, Rock reported back and told me that he talked them down to a $99 fee. WHAT??? Wasn't it already $99???? He then explained that earlier he had meant a $99 per person fee (we had 2 people).
I again ask if he could lower it. He said that it's unlikely, but he could try. I asked if I could talk to the hotel. Rock scoffs at me. "The hotel will not entertain you, sir. No sir, the hotel won't entertain you". I was in a daze of heavy confusion.
I really feeling the effects of the weed now. It hit. And it seemed like I had no options in the moment. With a sigh, I agree to the fee of $99. He then asked for my card details, but upon hearing the first four digits, Rock immediately interrupted me. There was an issue with Expedia accepting AMEX and after the weekend, they would stop accepting AMEX all together. I immediately knew that he was lying. My AMEX offer lasts until 2 weeks later at least. I give him my other card, and he charged my card. I greened out later and feel asleep.
I wake up the next morning and I see a message on Whatsapp. The hotel had gotten back to me, saying that they could refund me for the entire amount. What???? Expedia told me that it was them that was charging the fee. What the fuck is happening right now???
Long story short, we exchanged several messages with the hotel and Expedia. The hotel was saying that Expedia wasn't letting them cancel it. Expedia was claiming the other way around. I eventually get an email from Expedia. I wasn't getting the refund at all. I was furious as Expedia had already charged my account.
I scramble up a solution. I had heard that AMEX chargeback wasn't so good nowadays compared to before, but I thought I still had a chance here. I send them all the screenshots of the texts, emails, and phone records.
I also sent the screenshot to the hotel, asking for an explanation. The hotel scrambles several messages. "This is completely false. We agreed to it immediately". They had typed up an email to send to Expedia to attempt to get it canceled.
Later in the evening, I had received an email from Expedia that they had contacted the hotel, that they had put a lot of effort in helping me cancel and that the plan had worked, as I was getting a full refund! Super happy moment, thank you Expedia so much for all the help!!! Big thanks to Rock and the crew! Real shit, Expedia... throwing shade at the hotels you steal from.
So anyways, lesson learned. Do not book 3rd party. Ever. No matter what kind of deal you are getting. Also, do not spend money while high. You're stupid if you do. And most importantly, don't name your son Rock.
