I was in the market for an in ear headphone that I can use for the gym as well as take with me on flights. So after some deliberation, I decided to get the Sony XM5 over some other candidates such as Sennheiser Momentum 4, Technics EAH AZ80, Bose QC/QC Ultras.
Firstly, I must preface this by saying I'm not much of an audiophile but I do highly value sound quality. I prefer a neutral tone with an ever so slightly amplified bass and sub bass. I want the bass to be present, not really booming but punchy and tight. Clarity and instrument separation in the mids is as much, if not more, important to me than the bass. Additionally, I don't like too much of a sibilance at higher frequencies that can make my ears bleed. I don't mind them being tamed a bit, but only by a bit. So overall, I want to hear everything but don't mind some fine tuning and adjustments in certain frequency ranges. And I mostly listen to rock, metal and acoustic songs and rarely use custom equalization.
Some of the headphones I've recently used and liked are: AKG N5005 (my favorite of the lot) Sennheiser Momentum 2 Shure 215 SE Bose Sound Sport JBL Tour One M2
Now that the stage has been set with regards to what I like, maybe you'll be able to relate more with what I like and dislike and the Sony XM5 (after a couple of days of intense use) and make a more informed decision if you're looking to get them.
Likes: 1) Plenty of bass and sub bass. Not the kind that will rattle your ears, but the kind that makes its presence known whole also not sounding muddy/distorted. (9/10) 2) Surprisingly decent sound stage (with the right equalization). It's open, airy and the instrument separation in the mids is "not bad". Although, definitely not as clean as an open back headphone that you can find for under $200, but all this considered, this is still a plus in my books. (7/10) 3) The design, fit and comfort. This is subjective ofcourse, but I quiet like the look and feel of the nimble design, the material and the fit. I don't mind the foam tips that some other people have complained about. I've worn it for 2-4 hours at a stretch and had zero fatigue. But again, I must stress on the fact that all of this is extremely subjective so YMMV. (8/10) 4) Great ANC and ambient settings. It's hard to tell the difference between these modes when the music is playing but with the music turned off, the difference is night and day. The ANC seems to work spectacularly well by blocking close to everything. I can't comment much about what kind of noise they block well and what they don't but overall I can say I'm impressed (10/10)
Dislike: 1) The EQ straight out of the box was garbage to say the least. I had to use both Sony's app and the Wavelet app in conjunction to get the sound I like. I like the sound now but it was a hassle to get it to sound like my N5005. Moreover, I will have to port these settings to every device I connect to it, which is inconvenient (3/10) 2) Within 2 days of use, I can already see that my left earbud has on average 2-5% lower charge than my right. Normally I would have called it down to the master-slave operational characteristics but since the XM4s have been known to exhibit this issue, I'm actually extremely concerned that it might be an ongoing issue for the XM5 as well. There aren't many users reporting these issues but my guess is that since these are new earbuds. I also don't think the issue will be as bad as it was in the previous generations but the ghosts of it's Christmas past might still continue to haunt it (1/10) 3) While it's easy to pop it in and out of your ears, it takes a bit more effort to do the same with the charging case. These earbuds also inconveniently symmetrical. While that helps it's aesthetics, some of the issues I mentioned will exist, by design. Why can't we have the best of both worlds eh? Why must the universe be so unkind? (4/10) 4) I've noticed drops in connection (not music streaming) a few times when opening and closing the app. This doesn't affect the music streaming but the app tries to reconnect with the phone every now and then, and takes about a second or two to do that. So it's not much of a problem IMHO and I might just be nitpicking. (5/10)
Overall verdict: I would probably give it an overall score of 7.5/10. They're a great pair of earbuds that have decent sound quality, amazing ANC, comfortable fit and are aesthetically pleasing. But I definitely wouldn't buy it at its full price since I think there may better sounding ones in the same range but (is probably worse in the ANC department) like the Technics EAH AZ80 or Sennheiser Momentum 4 TW (none of which I've tried btw). I got them for $230 and I think for the price, these are pretty solid. I'm however worried about the long term durability though because of Sony's history with battery issues as well as the weird things I'm noticing with the battery drain after just a couple days of use.
So, those are just my thoughts about these buds. Hope it helps anyone looking to get a new pair of ANC earphones. Happy to answer any questions as well.

I'm a final year student graduating in a couple of months, and I've noticed especially during these last placements that I'm having trouble balancing rotating shifts along with rest and personal life. And my body also have trouble adjusting to rotating shifts, for example I had an afternoon shift one day and a morning shift the next, I could only manage to sleep for 4 hours before my morning shift starts. Any tips would be appreciated.

I actually laughed within the first 15 seconds. Its so far from being politically correct it felt like i was watching a youtube video from 2010, which is kind of refreshing?
It's pretty scary how fast this technology is progressing.
