Last October I noticed subtle problems that I thought might be all in my head or explained by something else - occasionally blurry vision (but my eyes are shit and I’m always on a computer), needing to work to enunciate after talking for a long time (but I was lecturing for 90 minutes in a mask), having to sit down after teaching (but I was out of shape after covid and moving for 90 minutes can be tiring). By early November I was in the ER twice for sudden inability to breathe and no explanation after extensive workups. I couldn’t keep my eyes open, chew or swallow, was slurring my speech, and couldn’t write on the blackboard in class. By mid-November I’d self-diagnosed with myasthenia and was lucky to get a December appointment with a neurologist. Although for the last sixteen years I’ve made between six and twelve kinds of Christmas cookies, by Thanksgiving I couldn’t lift the spoon to fill a measuring cup with flour. I stayed home by myself, ordered food and made stuffing. I didn’t do the dishes for three weeks.
I saw an ophthalmologist in mid-December who did the ice pack test which was positive. before Christmas I saw the neurologist who agreed within five minutes I had myasthenia. She started me on Imuran and mestinon. Within 30 minutes of my first mestinon my eyes went from almost completely shut to almost completely open. I was able to eat bread for the first time in weeks.
But I still had trouble breathing and couldn’t do tasks like fold laundry for more than ten minutes. I started IVIG in January. I shouldn’t have driven to the hospital because my vision was so blurry. I hadn’t laid flat for days and my pulse ox was 92% when I got there - not good since that meant my diaphragm was giving out. Within two hours I was lying flat reading my Kindle with 98% O2 and normal blood pressure for the first time in months.
It’s been a long year - I was incapacitated during the heat wave this summer. I’ve been hospitalized twice. I spend four days every three weeks getting IVIG, so it is about one third of my time. I’m far from where I want to be and stayed home for Thanksgiving because my muscles and vision can’t take a drive more than 15 minutes.
But this morning I made two kinds of cookie dough to add to the two I made last weekend. I cooked myself some turkey, stuffing, and cranberry sauce and cleaned the kitchen. I stopped to cry several times thinking of how I couldn’t even lift a spoon last year, and especially how hard I was on myself for not cleaning, or really doing anything but going to work and lying in bed, even though I knew something was very very wrong and was 99% sure it was myasthenia. I gave quiet thanks, and recognized my luck, to the doctors who didn’t care that Ibhad no antibodies, who started me right away on treatments, who agree now that we need something more aggressive and are ready to figure it out to get me several steps farther.

i’m pretty much back to normal in terms of my body symptoms , the only symptoms i have left is sore throat and gland pain. it’s not all the time but it can be pretty brutal when it’s bad. there’s no white spots left but it’s very sore.

انا طالب ثانوية عامة وممكن تشوفه سؤال ساذج بس انا وضعي يختلف شويه لاني قاسم السنة, ومدخلتش ولا مادة علمية فايعتبر اصلا معملتش حاجة (دخلت عربي و انجليزي بس وجبت درجة في العربي ضيعتلي المجموع) بس لسة عندي امل كبير لو عرفت اجيب درجات حلوة السنادي, الفكرة بقا ان انا يعتبر مبدأتش اصلا, فاهم الاساسيات يعني ممكن مثلا محتوي المنهج الي اتدرس في اخر اربع شهور من اول السنة انا مذاكر منه 10% بس او حاجة ومراكم حصص كتير اوي.
عشان كدة عملت بوست يمكن حد يقولي بطل احلام يقظة وركز علي حاجة تتحقق زي حاسبات مثلا, بس هل فعلا اقدر اجيب هندسة؟ اصل في احتمال كبير جدا امتحانات 2025 تبقي سهلة, وطبعا ده مش في صالحي لان مهما جبت عالي هيبقي في اعلي عشان الناس هتبقي ضامنه العربي و انا ضيعته, املي الوحيد ان الامتحانات تيجي صعبة او ده اعتقادي يمكن.
الامتحانات هتبدأ يوم 14 مايو يعني بعد 6 شهور من النهاردة

I belive that my knife is nice and sharp, and I am using the a pull through technique. My knife literally sticks to the potatoes half way through, like completely glued. My girlfriend gave me a weird look when she walked into the kitchen and seen me swinging my knife around dangerously in the kitchen with an entire potato, sliced in half and near permanently adhered to either side of the blade. It is a pretty pattern demascus French/Japanese hybrid blade. My guesses are the texture, and edge angle being very narrow play into it. That and it might not be as sharp as it could be.

This is the longest I've been sober in 15 years since I began using at 14 years old. The previous longest stretch was 3 months in 2021 when I was working abroad and didn't have access to any, but the anhedonia was terrible so I asked everyone I knew and eventually found some. At the time I didn't know I was experiencing PAWS.
Here's how it went this time
Month 1: irritability, sweating, insomnia, nightmares, reduced appetite
Months 2-4: overthinking, anhedonia, depression, thoughts of relapse
Months 5-6: slow improvement, increased joy, motivation
The last two months have been a huge relief. I'm glad I learned about Post Acute Withdrawal Symptoms through this sub and related to the effects people were sharing. Had it not been for this knowledge I probably would have given in. Things aren't perfect however I'm still noticing improvements.
